Role of job satisfaction as a mediator in the relationship between psychological climate and organisational commitment of lecturers at higher education institutions

The shortage of academic staff and the inability of higher education institutions to attract and retain highly qualified talent are critical problems in tertiary education. With the aim of addressing these issues, this article investigates the relationship between total rewards, job satisfaction and organisational commitment in higher education institutions in South Africa. A survey design was used in the study that was conducted. The systematic sampling technique was used to obtain the sample (N = 279) from two universities of technology. The measuring instruments used were the Total Rewards Questionnaire based on the World at Work Total Rewards Model, the Job Satisfaction Survey and the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire. Using the SPSS 24 and AMOS 24 software programs, structural equation modelling (SEM) was performed to analyse the data set. The results revealed that some elements of total rewards had a strong relationship with job satisfaction and organisational commitment among academic staff. The contribution of this study was to enhance the comprehension of existing literature on the relationship between the predictor variables (total rewards elements), job satisfaction and organisational commitment. The findings provided evidence that total rewards played a major role in influencing both job satisfaction and organisational commitment in higher education institutions. Therefore, the rewards specialists in universities of technology could apply a total rewards system to maintain, or even promote, academics’ job satisfaction and organisational commitment.

Administrators are an important human resource in Higher Education because they perform various duties that are critical to the daily operations of universities. In light of this, organisational commitment and job satisfaction of administrators are essential for the efficiency and effectiveness of universities. Notwithstanding the critical relevance and necessity of organisational commitment and job satisfaction, there is evidence of paucity of research on these areas among administrative staff in the South African higher education sector. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between organisational commitment and overall job satisfaction on the organisational commitment of administrators at a university in Gauteng. To achieve the aforementioned objective, a quantitative survey approach was used to examine the relationship between overall job satisfaction and organisational commitment. The selfadministered structured questionnaires were issued to 383 administrative staff members. Descriptive statistics was utilised to assess the levels of both organisational commitment and job satisfaction, results of which revealed that administrators were satisfied with and committed to the university. Spearman’s rho correlation analysis showed that there was a strong correlation between affective commitment and job satisfaction; and moderate correlations between job satisfaction and moral imperative. Similar strong correlation was observed between indebted obligation and job satisfaction. Conversely, a weak correlation occurred between job satisfaction and continuance commitment. Regression coefficients indicated that job satisfaction contributed positively to the prediction of affective commitment, moral imperative, indebted obligation and continuance commitment. Based on these findings, the recommendations and future research opportunities were suggested.

Purpose: The aim of this study to highlight the role of entrepreneurial culture in the relationship between entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial intentions at higher education institutions as study variables. This study could play a vital role in guiding students to choose entrepreneurship as a career by encouraging them. Methodology: A scoping review method was used to identify critical evidence in the reviewed relationships between the three above mentioned variables, which are: entrepreneurship education, entrepreneurial culture, and entrepreneurial intention. By using the scoping review method, the authors analyzed articles from Scopus and Web of Science databases published from the year 2003 to 2019, in which 52 relevant articles out of 105 related published articles were identified using Mendeley software to filter these articles.  Main Findings: The results show that there was a significant positive relationship between entrepreneurship education, entrepreneurial culture, and entrepreneurial intention when the entrepreneurial culture was inculcated in entrepreneurship education activities at higher education institutions. This study shows that the most used theory is the Theory of Planned Behavior, in which most studies were done on the level of universities, and a significant volume of reviews have been carried out in developed countries. Application of This study: The cultivation of entrepreneurial competencies is heavily influenced by the prevailing culture, which is usually strengthened through education and directed by individual entrepreneurial intention along with the role of entrepreneurial culture. Hence, this could be useful for developing and economies in transition countries that might face high unemployment rates to focus on these variables in comparison to developed countries. Novelty: This study highlights and further proposes the mediation role of entrepreneurial culture in entrepreneurship education - entrepreneurial intention relationship based on the outcomes of the scoping review. Indeed, this relationship was just mentioned by words and not validated or measured comprehensively by the scholars. Hence, there is a chance for further studies in this body of knowledge.

PurposeHigher education institutions are centers for knowledge creation and transfer, but most are not considered effective learning organizations, as their knowledge resources are not highly used. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the moderating role of organizational learning on the relationship between employee participation and academic results in higher education institutions to promote learning in such organizations.Design/methodology/approachData collected from 1,050 faculties and managers at 139 Vietnamese universities were aggregated and used for analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis and hierarchical multiple regression techniques were applied to test the moderating role of organizational learning in the relationship between employee participation and academic results.FindingsThe results provide support for the view that organizational learning positively moderates the relationship between employee participation and academic results in higher education institutions.Originality/valueThe paper explores the concept of organizational learning in the higher education context and clarifies its moderating role to enhance Vietnamese university performance through learning.

The higher education environment is experiencing significant changes, and the focus is moving to competitiveness and customer care. The role of organisational culture and job satisfaction in the delivery of quality customer service was investigated in this study. The indications are that a relationship should exist between organisational culture and learner satisfaction, but it transpired that the relationship between staff members’ job satisfaction and learner satisfaction was not significant. An evaluation of a proposed learner-satisfaction model revealed interesting dynamics influencing relationships between the core dimensions studied. Daar is aanduidings dat daar ’n verband tussen organisasiekultuur en leerdertevredenheid is, maar dit het geblyk dat daar nie ’n betekenisvolle verband tussen werksbevrediging en leerdertevredenheid is nie. ’n Evaluering van ’n voorgestelde leerdertevredenheidsmodel het interessante dinamika wat die verhouding tussen die kerndimensies van die studie beïnvloed, aan die lig gebring.

The paper analyzes the impact on the concept of Quality attributable to the innovations introduced by the Apostolic constitution Veritatis gaudium. The document offers not only operational indications but outlines the objectives that the academic community is invited to take up.Three distinct levels of challenges are highlighted: the role of academic institutions and the need to innovate learning systems; the relationship between higher education centres and the whole society; interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity as levers to support knowledge. The article concludes with an invitation to reflect on how to initiate the profound reform process to which higher education institutions are called by Veritatis Gaudium.

The motivation of the individuals working in higher education institutions has been a topic of great interest for managers and researchers for a long while. This study has been taken to estimate the importance of faculty development program (FDP) as perceived by a faculty member, the role of FDP on faculty motivation and faculty performance, exploring whether faculty motivation mediates the relationship between FDP and employee performance. To achieve the stated aim, data has been collected from 311 faculty members associated with government and private sector institutions of higher education in Uttarakhand State (India). Important factors that motivate faculty to participate in FDP and its influence on faculty motivation and performance were analyzed using factor analysis, regression analysis, and Sobel test to establish the relationship. The findings indicate that FDP has a positive effect on the teaching of faculty, enhances their skills, helps control their emotions, and strengthens their capacity to perform academic and administrative duties. Moreover, FDP enhances work motivation and, in turn, helps faculty in improving their performances. To strengthen faculty motivation, the emphasis must be put on improving faculty recognition and reputation, making work more challenging and exciting, providing better career advancement prospects, and focus more on appropriate salary and compensation benefits for faculty members.

The primary motivation behind the review was to examine the interrelation between job commitment and job satisfaction of individuals in higher education institutions and its effect on their performance. This study focuses on various theories related to job commitment and job satisfaction. Keeping in mind the end goal to have better standard of life and to satisfy one’s needs, one has to work with satisfaction as it brings about development not only for the employees but also enhances the productivity and service to the institution consequently it increases the commitment to the institution. Following are the research objectives for this study (1) To look at the interrelation between job commitment and job satisfaction among the employee of an institution of higher education (2) To examine the effect of employee on job satisfaction and job commitment due to their biographical characteristics (3) To examine the significant way to motivate employee in order to boost the job satisfaction. The result showed that there exists a critical connection between job commitment and employment fulfillment of a person. The study highlights that the higher the level of motivation the greater the enhancement of satisfaction and commitment of the employees towards their institution.
