Abstract Historians of Chinese literature and philosophy have written extensively about the significance of emotion (qing 情) in late Ming times (1522–1644). But how did a pictorial image manifest emotion, and how were its visible signs of emotion conceptualized? This article considers the dilemma that painters faced in general when they represented an expressive body: How could the display of emotion in gesture and facial expression be contained within the bounds of propriety? The author examines, in particular, how Chen Hongshou 陳洪綬 (1598–1652) resolved this dilemma in two figural paintings, one of which represents a sorrowful woman, and the other, a worried drunkard. She argues that Chen's representation of sorrow and anxiety was inextricably tied to the pictorial conventions utilized by the print designers of his day to illustrate dramatic, emotionally charged moments in a story. Hence, Chen animated the actors in his paintings with emphatic gestures and poses, complementing their expressive bodies with more subtly shaped facial features. But Chen's incorporation into his painting of what was at the time readily identified as “print” disturbed his figural compositions. As much as the expressive figures aroused an empathetic response from his viewers, the juxtaposition of incompatible manners of representation also made his work seem strange and preposterous. However, Chen's visual laments were derived from poems and historical anecdotes. The author argues that the verbal texts to which he alluded not only enhanced and justified his viewers' empathetic response to his paintings but also enabled him to delineate emotions that were otherwise eschewed by the painters of his time.

ABSTRACTBackground:Positivity recognition bias has been reported for facial expression as well as memory and visual stimuli in aged individuals, whereas emotional facial recognition in Alzheimer disease (AD) patients is controversial, with possible involvement of confounding factors such as deficits in spatial processing of non-emotional facial features and in verbal processing to express emotions. Thus, we examined whether recognition of positive facial expressions was preserved in AD patients, by adapting a new method that eliminated the influences of these confounding factors.Methods:Sensitivity of six basic facial expressions (happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, disgust, and fear) was evaluated in 12 outpatients with mild AD, 17 aged normal controls (ANC), and 25 young normal controls (YNC). To eliminate the factors related to non-emotional facial features, averaged faces were prepared as stimuli. To eliminate the factors related to verbal processing, the participants were required to match the images of stimulus and answer, avoiding the use of verbal labels.Results:In recognition of happiness, there was no difference in sensitivity between YNC and ANC, and between ANC and AD patients. AD patients were less sensitive than ANC in recognition of sadness, surprise, and anger. ANC were less sensitive than YNC in recognition of surprise, anger, and disgust. Within the AD patient group, sensitivity of happiness was significantly higher than those of the other five expressions.Conclusions:In AD patient, recognition of happiness was relatively preserved; recognition of happiness was most sensitive and was preserved against the influences of age and disease.

Facial expression recognition is a challenging task. A facial expression is formed by contracting or relaxing different facial muscles on human face that results in temporally deformed facial features like wide-open mouth, raising eyebrows or etc. The challenges of such system have to address with some issues. For instances, lighting condition is a very difficult problem to constraint and regulate. On the other hand, real-time processing is also a challenging problem since there are so many facial features to be extracted and processed and sometimes, conventional classifiers are not even effective in handling those features and produce good classification performance. This chapter discusses the issues on how the advanced feature selection techniques together with good classifiers can play a vital important role of real-time facial expression recognition. Several feature selection methods and classifiers are discussed and their evaluations for real-time facial expression recognition are presented in this chapter. The content of this chapter is a way to open-up a discussion about building a real-time system to read and respond to the emotions of people from facial expressions.

Although deep neural networks (DNNs) have led to many remarkable results in cognitive tasks, they are still far from catching up with human-level cognition in antinoise capability. New research indicates how brittle and susceptible current models are to small variations in data distribution. In this letter, we study the stochasticity-resistance character of biological neurons by simulating the input-output response process of a leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neuron model and proposed a novel activation function, rand softplus (RSP), to model the response process. In RSP, a scale factor [Formula: see text] is employed to mimic the stochasticity-adaptability of biological neurons, thereby enabling the antinoise capability of a DNN to be improved by the novel activation function. We validated the performance of RSP with a 19-layer residual network (ResNet) and a 19-layer visual geometry group (VGG) on facial expression recognition data sets and compared it with other popular activation functions, such as rectified linear units (ReLU), softplus, leaky ReLU (LReLU), exponential linear unit (ELU), and noisy softplus (NSP). The experimental results show that RSP is applied to VGG-19 or ResNet-19, and the average recognition accuracy under five different noise levels exceeds the other functions on both of the two facial expression data sets; in other words, RSP outperforms the other activation functions in noise resistance. Compared with the application in ResNet-19, the application of RSP in VGG-19 can improve a network's antinoise performance to a greater extent. In addition, RSP is easier to train compared to NSP because it has only one parameter to be calculated automatically according to the input data. Therefore, this work provides the deep learning community with a novel activation function that can better deal with overfitting problems.

In this paper we would like to offer an analysis of issues related to the translation of Alexievich’s works into Chinese. Furthermore, we will look at reviews of her books by Chinese scholars and critics. On the one hand, opinions of professional literary critics will be represented. On the other hand, we would like to show Chinese writers’ perception of her literary works. We will discuss her possible influence on modern Chinese literature. The conclusions will offer our reflections on how cultural, historical and conceptual connections have been forged between Alexievich’s literary legacy and her Chinese audience.

In addition, the article considers the web forum, a platform of research and discussion that is increasingly becoming a part of scholarly exchange.

This research aimed at testing multiple fitness hypothesis of attraction, investigating relationship between male facial characteristic and female students' reported readiness to engage in various social relations. A total of 27 male photos were evaluated on five dimensions on a seven-point Likert-type scale ranging from -3 to 3, by convenient sample of 90 female students of University of Sarajevo. The dimensions were: desirable to date – not desirable to date; desirable to marry – not desirable to marry; desirable to have sex with – not desirable to have sex with; desirable to be a friend – not desirable to be a friend; attractive - not attractive. Facial metric measurements of facial features such as distance between the eyes, smile width and height were performed using AutoCad. The results indicate that only smile width positively correlates with desirability of establishing friendship, whilst none of the other characteristics correlates with any of the other dimensions. This leads to the conclusion that motivation to establish various social relations cannot be reduced to mere physical appearance, mainly facial features, but many other variables yet to be investigated.

Music has a personal interest in its individual. It can deliver happiness for those who listen to it. On the other hand, the music should correlate with its pictures through the video clip, such as color, sound, gesture, etc. This article attempts to investigate and explore the interpersonal meaning of the LATHI Song. This study was conducted qualitatively using a descriptive-analytical study to check how different semiotic and modes such as music, sound, speech, color, action, and facial expression work together to build the interpersonal meaning. LATHI song is successful in attracting audiences' attention around the world. The song's lyrics are mainly in English, except for the bridge sung in Javanese. Not only that, but the bridge also employs pelog, a Javanese seven-note scale used in gamelan arrangements. In addition, its instruments played has a unique characteristic and easy listening.

<span lang="EN-US">In the field of consumer science, customer facial expression is often categorized either as negative or positive. Customer who portrays negative emotion to a specific product mostly means they reject the product while a customer with positive emotion is more likely to purchase the product. To observe customer emotion, many researchers have studied different perspectives and methodologies to obtain high accuracy results. Conventional neural network (CNN) is used to recognize customer spontaneous facial expressions. This paper aims to recognize customer spontaneous expressions while the customer observed certain products. We have developed a customer service system using a CNN that is trained to detect three types of facial expression, i.e. happy, sad, and neutral. Facial features are extracted together with its histogram of gradient and sliding window. The results are then compared with the existing works and it shows an achievement of 82.9% success rate on average.</span>
