Parameter correlation study of cylinder liner roughness for production and quality control

Surface roughness plays an important role in the control of emissions and friction losses in the cylinder liner—piston ring system as well as securing economically favourable manufacturing. A number of different commercial cylinder liner types have been characterized using traditional two-dimensional stylus and ISO parameters together with the latest three-dimensional characterization. The results highlight the weak and strong correlations between different families of parameters traditionally used for liner surface specifications. The bearing curve based Rxq and Rk parameter families have been evaluated and show systematic and consistent differences when characterizing the same surface features when trying to establish independent characterization of the highly stratified, two-process cylinder liner surfaces. No significant improvement in discrimination results from using ensemble averages. Presentation of correlations in the form of topological diagrams helps to show when parameters with a high intrinsic variability can be effectively replaced by other more robust parameters with which they have a high correlation. Plateau parameters are in general more highly correlated than valley parameters. Three-dimensional parameters show high internal correlations and also correlate highly with some corresponding two-dimensional parameters.

Abstract Background: Accurate discrimination between ovarian borderline tumors (BOTs) and malignancies with imaging play an important role in management.Purpose: To evaluate the ability of T2-weighted imaging (T2WI)-based radiomics to discriminate ovarian borderline tumors (BOTs) from malignancies based on two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) lesion segmentation methods.Methods: A total of 95 patients with pathologically proven ovarian BOTs and 101 patients with malignancies were retrospectively included in this study. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of the signatures derived from T2WI-based radiomics in their ability to differentiate between BOTs and malignancies and compared the performance differences in the 2D and 3D segmentation models. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator method (LASSO) was used for radiomics feature selection and machine learning processing.Results: The radiomics score between BOTs and malignancies in four types of selected T2WI-based radiomics models differed significantly at the statistical level (p < 0.0001). For the classification between BOTs and malignant masses, the 2D and 3D coronal T2WI-based radiomics models yielded accuracy values of 0.79 and 0.83 in the testing group, respectively; the 2D and 3D sagittal fat-suppressed (fs) T2WI-based radiomics models yielded an accuracy of 0.78 and 0.99, respectively.Conclusion: Our results suggest that T2WI-based radiomic features were highly correlated with ovarian tumor subtype classification. 3D-sagittal MRI radiomics features may help clinicians differentiate ovarian BOTs from malignancies with high accuracy (ACC).

In the diagnostic work-up of Madelung deformity conventional radiographic imaging is often used, assessing the three-dimensional deformity in a two-dimensional manner. A three-dimensional approach could expand our understanding of Madelung deformity’s complex wrist anatomy, while removing inter- and intra-rater differences. We measured previous two-dimensional-based and newly developed three-dimensional-based parameters in 18 patients with Madelung deformity (28 wrists) and 35 healthy participants (56 wrists). Madelung deformity wrists have increased levels of ulnar tilt, lunate subsidence, lunate fossa angle, and palmar carpal displacement. The lunate fossa is more concave and irregular, and angles between scaphoid, lunate, and triquetral bones are decreased. These findings validate the underlying principles of current two-dimensional criteria and reveal previously unknown anatomical abnormalities by utilizing novel three-dimensional parameters to quantify the radiocarpal joint.

The protein translocon of the outer envelope of chloroplasts (Toc) consists of the core subunits Toc159, Toc75, and Toc34. To investigate the molecular structure, the core complex was purified. This core complex has an apparent molecular mass of ∼500 kD and a molecular stoichiometry of 1:4:4–5 between Toc159, Toc75, and Toc34. The isolated translocon recognizes both transit sequences and precursor proteins in a GTP-dependent manner, suggesting its functional integrity. The complex is embedded by the lipids phosphatidylcholine and digalactosyldiacylglyceride. Two-dimensional structural analysis by EM revealed roughly circular particles consistent with the formation of a stable core complex. The particles show a diameter of ∼130 Å with a solid ring and a less dense interior structure. A three-dimensional map obtained by random conical tilt reconstruction of electron micrographs suggests that a “finger”-like central region separates four curved translocation channels within one complex.

We give a complete characterization of the possible response matrices at a fixed frequency of n -terminal electrical networks of inductors, capacitors, resistors and grounds, and of n -terminal discrete linear elastodynamic networks of springs and point masses, both in three-dimensional and two-dimensional cases. Specifically, we construct networks that realize any response matrix that is compatible with the known symmetry properties and thermodynamic constraints of response matrices. Owing to a mathematical equivalence, we also obtain a characterization of the response matrices of discrete acoustic networks.

Plateau honing produces a unique texture on cylinder liner surface. This surface is engineered to simulate the actual running in process of the engine and results in a core layer superimposed on valleys. Because of the complex nature of the surface, characterization of such surfaces is very different from traditional surface texture analysis. Different filtering techniques have been employed to remove waviness from these profiles. Parameters are subsequently computed from the bearing area curve of the roughness profile. With recent progress in filtering of surface profiles, we propose a functional analysis approach based on morphological filters. The advantage of this technique is the clear separation of the core texture from the valleys resulting in better correlation with process and functional measures. A number of profiles are collected from two sets of liners with different performance characteristics. A cause effect model is built and used for performance prediction.

ABSTRACTWe present a first-principles characterization of the initial stages of formation of AlN films on c-plane SiC substrates. Studying the competition between two-dimensional films and three-dimensional islands as a function of Al and N abundances, we find that a two-dimensional film can wet the surface in N-rich conditions. Ordered layer-by-layer growth can proceed to some extent on this wetting layer, and is improved by the formation of an atomically mixed interface which eliminates interface charge accumulation. Our results indicate that the stable AlN films grow in the (0001) orientation on the Si-terminated SiC(0001) substrate.
