Structured and innovative curriculum development can have a profound impact on learning outcomes.  This paper provides interesting and innovative ideas for educators in higher education institutions to allow them to achieve improved learning outcomes.  This paper showcases how engaging students throughout the course and supporting them through consistent, incremental course development leads to innovative curriculum development.  The improved course structure and students’ increased engagement achieve maximum learning outcomes.  Various research studies support the use of innovative methods though not much is said about consistency of assessments and course structure in curriculum development with the aim to reduce exam anxiety and ultimately enhance learning outcomes.  In our unit of study, seminar presentations and poster sessions in conference style were used to engage students and introduce them to a different way of learning other than reports.  The paper not only provides information for educators on how to design engaging course structures but more significantly supports the outcomes through the analysis of student feedback based on objective teaching evaluation conducted before exams.

New firms are an important mechanism through which new jobs are created. However, the new venture failure rate is greater than the rate of creation. Business incubators have been organized to bring new businesses together to increase the probability of success. Incubators do not guarantee success; however, evaluating potential clients on Critical Success Factors can minimize failures once the firm joins an incubator. This research investigates the screening practices of incubators and identifies unique groups of incubators. The screening practices were found to relate to sponsorship but not to physical characteristics or objectives.

From 1998 to 2001 a consortium of regional partners – the University of Twente, the Enschede Foundation Business & Science Park, the Regional Development Agency, and the Municipality of Enschede – carried out a project to attract new business to the area of Twente and to the Business & Science Park in particular. In that period, a well-functioning structure for cooperation among the partners was established in order to attract companies in sectors related to the principal research areas of the university Cooperation in the consortium is analysed using the ‘4S’ model (scope of cooperation; skills; scale; social networks) to identify the added value of the partners in this endeavour. It emerges that the four parties were complementary to each other. In total, some 13 companies have been attracted to the region, 161 jobs have been created and it is expected that in the next five years those 13 companies will create around 250 new jobs. Interviews were carried out with the companies to assess the value for them of the university's technology research and facilities. The results indicate that the technological expertise of the university was and remains one of the key attractions of the region for the companies.

As markets and business patterns change, new business establishments are created to serve them. Those new establishments can be provided by entrepreneurs creating new firms or by the owners of existing businesses opening new locations. We show that over the past three decades, new establishments have increasingly been provided by existing businesses opening new locations. Those new locations have created jobs at a higher rate than brand-new firms, which helps to boost job creation. Looking at both forms of new establishments shows that job creation is down following the recession, but new locations were growing entering the recession and should be a critical component of job creation as the economy continues to recover.
