An alternative assessment of writing skills was applied to 60 students (38 with learning disabilities and 22 with average/high performance), ranging in age from 9 to 12 years. The aim was to provide a functional, curriculum based assessment of linguistic/metalinguistic, cognitive/metacognitive and writing skills. The assessment was developed on the basis of prior research on the difficulties experienced by students with writing. A teaching intervention was planned and executed in order to develop the writing skills of the students with learning disabilities using three educational software tools: Ideokataskeves, Logomatheia, and Micorworlds Pro. The results showedthat the students with learning disabilities exhibited poor performance in all writing skills assessed. The teaching intervention produced better performance of the learning disabilities students in the posttests, indicating that a learning environment which encourages active participation in writing processes can facilitate the development of writing and critical thinking skills in this population.

ABSTRACTCritical thinking skills and writing habits must continue to be taught in each learning activity to maximize the abilities or competencies of students. This reading habit is also very necessary to add students' insights and knowledge before writing scientific papers. With these two components, it can be the first step towards making a good scientific paper. so the purpose of this study was to determine the direct effect of critical thinking skills and reading habits on student writing skills. The research method in this study is a qualitative description of the research method by providing an explanation in the form of a description based on data from various scientific references. With this method the researcher can explain in detail and be arranged how the influence of reading habits and the ability to think critically on the ability to write scientific works of students. Based on data and scientific references collected, analyzed, and studied, the following results were obtained: (1) students 'scientific scientific skills were positively influenced by the level of students' reading habits; (2) the ability to think critically has a direct positive effect on students' scientific writing skills. Thus, the better or higher the interest in reading students and their critical thinking skills, the better the ability to write scientific papers. From the results of this study it can also be seen that the habits of reading and the ability to think critically students are interconnected and have a major influence on the skills of writing scientific papers. All citizens are expected to participate in the processes of democratic decision making in the postschool years, and the goals of social studies education have long included the preparation of an informed citizenry. However, surveys show that social studies instruction is often not provided for students with disabilities, and those that receive instruction do poorly compared to their nondisabled peers. Students' poor performance is exacerbated by the reliance on “inconsiderate” textbooks that are often poorly organized, lacking in content, and devoid of important background information. Project-based instruction is an alternative to the exclusive reliance on textbook-based instruction in the social studies. Students investigate a problem or question and develop artifacts based on these investigations. In this study, students with learning disabilities, working under two different conditions, developed projects about factors that precipitated the American Revolutionary War. Students in both conditions worked cooperatively to learn about some aspect of the Revolutionary War, and they then contributed to the construction and presentation of a group report about the topic. However, students in one group had access to word processing tools, and the other had access to word processing and multimedia presentation tools in developing their projects. Analyses of students' knowledge revealed a substantial improvement in both conditions after the completion of the projects.

A Study Guide was tailored to the students of De La Salle and was used as Study Partner. This employs the inquiry- based instruction through the 5 E’s of science lesson: Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend and Evaluate. The descriptive method of research was used in the study to determine the efficacy of the useof Study Partner in the manifestation of science and language skills among the respondents and its relationship to the grade of the students. Results showed that the use of the Study Partner in Human Anatomy and Physiology had been contributory to the enhancement of the language and science skills of the students. The use of the Study Partner had developed a process, reasoning and the critical thinking skills of the students as well as the reading and writing skills. A significant contribution is in the development of the critical thinking skills in science and the reading and writing skills in the language area. The process skills and the critical thinking skills developed were also found to have significant contribution to the final grade of the students in Human Anatomy and Physiology. Keywords - Education, efficacy, science skills, language skills, study guide, study partnerdescriptive design, De La Salle Lipa, Philippines
