Poplar is economically important and fast growing tree species which is widely adopted by farmers of northwest India. The nursery study was conducted for two years to find out clonal variation for plant height, collar diameter, biomass, wood traits and incidence of leaf spot disease. Results found significant differences among the clones for all growth traits, specific gravity and fiber length. Clones L-290/84, 22-N and L-50/88 were promising for tree height and collar diameter during 1st year study. In 2nd year the tree height was highest in L-7/87 but was at par with L-34/82. L-7/87, L-247/84 and L-48/89 were promising for diameter. Clones L-48/89, L-7/87, 22-N, L-247/84, S7C8, and WSL-22 recorded superiority for both above ground and root biomass. The maximum fiber length was recorded in clone WSL-29 (0.936 mm) which was at par with those of WSL-22, L-17/92 and L-50/88. The wood specific gravity ranged from 0.383 to 0.498. Clone L-290/84 was at top rank but statistically par with 40-N, G-48, L-50/88 and T-90. The relative resistance for leaf spot was the higher in L-290/84, 40-N and WSL-29 in 1st year, and WSL-29, L-17/92, L-290/84, 22-N, 40-N, S7C8, and L-48/89 were found to be resistant during 2nd year. On the basis of all the traits clones L-48/89, 22-N, L-290/84, 40-N, and WSL-22 have shown promise and need to be tested at multiple sites before commercial cultivation.

Abstract Results from clonal trials of Populus deltoides conducted in two distinct agroclimatic regions of Punjab in northwestern India are reported and discussed. Sixteen clones were evaluated at Hambran and Bathinda where commonly grown clone ‘G-48’ was considered as control. Significant differences among clones (P < 0.001) were observed for diameter at breast height (DBH), tree height and volume at the age of four and six years under both the site conditions. Clone ‘L-48’ ranked first for volume at six year age at both sites and was followed by clone ‘Ranikhet’. The respective superiority for volume of these clones over control was 44.8 and 23.2 per cent at Hambran and 72.5 and 30.7 per cent at Bathinda. All growth traits registered significantly higher values at Hambran in comparison to those at Bathinda. Clone x site interaction was also significant (P < 0.001). The clones ‘L-168’, ‘154/86’, ‘Solan-z’ and ‘170/88’ experienced huge fluctuation in ranking between sites for volume at 6-year age. The DBH and height showed significant and positive correlation with each other and with tree volume at all the age combinations. The clonal mean heritability was quite high both at Hambran (0.73-0.86) and Bathinda (0.80-0.95). The genetic advance were the highest for volume (33.34-64.26%) and the lowest (10.65-22.79%) in case of height.

The use of clonal varieties in forestry offers great potential to improve growth traits (quantity) and wood properties (quality) of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.). Loblolly pine trees established via somatic embryogenesis (clones), full-sib zygotic crosses, and half-sib zygotic open-pollinated families were sampled to identify variation in growth and wood properties among and within clonal lines and zygotic controls. Increment cores 5 mm in diameter were collected at age 4 from a total of 2615 trees. Growth properties (diameter at 1.4 m and total tree height) and wood properties (whole-core density, latewood and earlywood density, and latewood percent) were measured for each tree sampled in the study. Overall, growth properties were better for full-sib seedling than for clonal lines, whereas wood density was higher for clonal lines than full-sib and open-pollinated seedlings. However, there were clonal lines with better growth and higher wood density. Clonal repeatability of both growth and wood properties across sampled sites and genetic correlations between growth and wood traits were determined, with higher repeatability observed for wood traits compared with growth traits. Significant genetic correlations were observed for tree height and wood properties, whereas weak correlations were observed for diameter and wood properties.

Abstract Inheritance pattern of wood traits, especially heartwood/ sapwood percentage and specific gravity and interactions of wood traits with other growth traits were investigated in a 27-year-old half-sib progeny trial of teak. Wood traits showed highly significant variation for specific gravity, heartwood and sapwood percentage at family level. There was non-significant family vs. replication variation for these traits. Among the growth traits, there was significant variation for height and girth. Families and individual trees showed varying levels of heritability. Among the growth traits, height showed high heritability (individual tree heritability, h2 (i) = 34.3%; family heritability, h2 (f ) = 34.1%) followed by girth (h2 (i) = 19.4%; h2 (f ) = 31.4%). Among the wood traits, maximum heritability values were obtained for sapwood percentage (h2 (i) = 76.6%; h2 (f ) = 70.7%) and heartwood percentage (h2 (i) = 76.9%; h2 (f ) = 69.7%). Specific gravity exhibited heritability values of 29.1 and 41.8%, at individual tree and family level, respectively. Family heritability was higher than single-tree heritability for specific gravity; single-tree heritability exceeded family heritability for heartwood percentage. Specific gravity exhibited significant positive genotypic correlation with heartwood percentage suggesting that improvement in heartwood percentage would lead to a correlated improvement in specific gravity. Heartwood percentage showed significant positive correlation with growth traits viz., height and girth. Some of the families showed good GCA for growth and wood traits investigated. The good general combiners identified in the present study can be used for establishment of advanced generation seed orchards and breeding arboreta for improvement of teak for specific or combination of above traits.

The objective of this study was to characterize selected properties of black cottonwood and balsam poplar to determine whether these species should be distinguished in their utilization. At present, black cottonwood is excluded from the "northern aspen" species group embraced by the National Lumber Grading Agency grading rules for dimension lumber and from use as core material in softwood plywood. Samples of black cottonwood were obtained from three sites in British Columbia. Samples of balsam poplar were obtained from three sites in Alberta. Ten tres were randomly selected from each site and a single 130 cm long bolt was collected immediately above breast height (1.36 m) from each tree. From two trees on each site, three additional bolts of the same length were collected immediately above the height positions located at 25, 50, and 75% of total tree height. The average basic specific gravity of the two species did not differ significantly (black cottonwood, 0.338; balsam poplar, 0.337) in this study. However, differences do exist between site averages, at least for black cottonwood. The initial green moisture contents differ significantly (black cottonwood, 160.5%; balsam poplar, 120.6%) and may be expected to affect their drying requirements differentially. For both species, the specific gravity increases and the green moisture content decreases with increasing height position in the tree. The average fiber length of black cottonwood is significantly longer than that of balsam poplar. The bending properties of strength and stiffness for black cottonwood were found to be significantly greater than for balsam poplar. Variation of these properties with height position in the tree was studied. Fiber length was found to decrease with increasing height position, while the bending strength properties were not affected by height position.

During the survey of the forest fungal disease, of Jalgaon district, two severe leaf spot diseases on Lannae coromandelica and ( Ougenia dalbergioides (Papilionaceae) were observed in Jalgaon, forest during July to September 2016-17. The casual organism was identified as Stigmina lanneae and Phomopsis sp. respectively1-4,7. These are first report from Jalgaon and Maharashtra state.

Olive leaf spot (OLS) caused by Fusicladiumoleagineum is mainly controlled using copper fungicides. However, the replacement of copper-based products with eco-friendly alternatives is a priority. The use of plant resistance-inducers (PRIs) or biological control agents (BCAs) could contribute in this direction. In this study we investigated the potential use of three PRIs (laminarin, acibenzolar-S-methyl, harpin) and a BCA (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB24) for the management of OLS. The tested products provided control efficacy higher than 68%. In most cases, dual applications provided higher (p < 0.05) control efficacies compared to that achieved by single applications. The highest control efficacy of 100% was achieved by laminarin. Expression analysis of the selected genes by RT-qPCR revealed different kinetics of induction. In laminarin-treated plants, for most of the tested genes a higher induction rate (p < 0.05) was observed at 3 days post application. Pal, Lox, Cuao and Mpol were the genes with the higher inductions in laminarin-treated and artificially inoculated plants. The results of this study are expected to contribute towards a better understanding of PRIs in olive culture and the optimization of OLS control, while they provide evidence for potential contributions in the reduction of copper accumulation in the environment.
