This catalogue lists 46 valid species included in 7 genera and two subfamilies of the family Hydraenidae (Coleoptera), recorded from India. The subfamily Hydraeninae accommodates 24 species (5 genera), and Ochthebiinae 22 species (2 genera). We include synonyms, type localities, type depositories, and distribution of the species. The Himalayan region supports the maximum diversity (31 species), followed by Deccan Peninsula (5 species), Western-Ghats (5 species), Northeast (4 species), Gangetic Plains (4 species), Semi-Arid (2 species), and Islands (one species).

Abstract BackgroundIn recent times Gallbladder cancer (GBC) incidences increased many folds in India. Majority of GBC cases are being reported from arsenic hotspots identified in Bihar. MethodsIn this prospective study volunteers were selected who underwent surgery in our cancer institute. There were 11 control benign gallbladder cases and 28 confirmed gallbladder cancer cases. Their biological samples such as blood, gallbladder tissue, gallbladder stone, bile and hair samples were collected for arsenic estimation. Moreover, n=512 gallbladder cancer patients blood samples were evaluated for the presence of arsenic to understand exposure level in the population. ResultsA significantly high arsenic concentration (p<0.05) was detected in the blood samples, gallbladder tissue, gallstones, bile and hair samples in comparison to the control group. Moreover, n=512 blood samples of GBC patients had significantly very high arsenic concentration. ConclusionsThe study shows very high arsenic concentration observed in the blood, gallbladder tissue, gallbladder stone, bile and hair samples in GBC cases in comparison to the benign control cases indicates the correlation between chronic arsenic exposure and gallbladder cancer incidences in eastern Indo-Gangetic plains region. The study also makes an attempt to establish the likely correlation/association between arsenic exposure and gallbladder cancer disease.

An experiment was conducted in the Lower Gangetic Plains of West Bengal during 2017 and 2018 with three popular green gram varieties of the region (viz. Samrat, PM05 and Meha). Along with studying the variation of PAR components, a radiation use efficiency (RUE) based equation irrespective of varieties was developed and used to estimate the green gram yield for 2040-2090 period under RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. Field experimental results showed that almost 33.33 to 52.12% higher yield was recorded in 2017 in comparison to 2018. As observed through pooled experimental data of two years, PM05 produced 3 to 4% higher pod and 4 to 15% more biomass than Samrat and Meha with the highest radiation use efficiency (1.786 g MJ-1). Results also depicted that enhanced thermal condition would cause 9 to 15 days of advancement in maturity. Biomass and yield would also decrease gradually from 2040 to 2090 with an average rate of 7.60-11.70% and 10.19-14.17% respectively. The supporting literature confirms that future yield prediction under projected climate based on “radiation to biomass” conversion efficiency can be used successfully as a method to evaluate climate change impact on crop performance.

While there are numerous studies that explore the agronomic and the economic benefits of Conservation Agriculture in South Asia, only few studies have explored the farmers' experiences and the drivers of its adoption. This study aims to learn directly from current users through exploration of their decision processes, evaluations, and experiences in extrapolating the concept for the broader scaling of Conservation Agriculture across the Eastern Gangetic Plains (EGPs) of South Asia. We analyzed a total of 57 qualitative and semi-structured individual interviews with the farmers who are currently implementing Conservation Agriculture practices across six locations. These farmers faced a variety of hurdles including hesitation in accepting and adopting the technology, technical performance challenges, information gaps, and subsidy/project dependence. To overcome these, respondents adopted various strategic approaches such as assuming the role of an educator by sharing their knowledge with other farmers in the community, changing mindsets for stover retention, adoption through self-investment, and opting for communal purchase of machinery to reduce project dependence. This led farmers to identify a range of benefits including improved socio-economic condition, increased respect in the community, and increased free time to pursue diverse interests and opportunities. Additionally, strengthened information networks such as improved interpersonal connection with agricultural universities, government extension systems, and local farmers groups have positively enhanced the uptake, allowing them to overcome further limitations. These findings provide novel learnings on how farmers overcome nine key friction points, and what this means for increasing the farmer uptake of new practices across the region, which are crucial for successful future interventions as implemented by the government and development organizations.
