The reality of paramedicine can cause students emotional distress, especially if this tests their values or beliefs. Therefore, educating students to be resilient and prepared for unpredictable, distressing events should be considered. The need to increase professional longevity in paramedicine has shifted employers' focus from road readiness to road resilience, which presents a complex challenge for educators. This article is the first of a series to discuss the use of supporting sciences to build road resilience in undergraduate paramedicine programmes. A review of the literature on paramedic education demonstrates there is new knowledge, based on experience in clinical practice and research, that paramedic educators can draw on to develop their discipline. Paramedics with postgraduate qualifications can shape the future of their professional discipline when their research produces a new discourse that informs a curriculum which can meet contemporary challenges. Discussion of a fictional case study illustrates how an emotional crisis could provide a platform for reflective learning and make a student more effective as a paramedic, and the educational environment needed to facilitate this.

Russia has become a knowledge-based society. The unified educational environment as a means of continuous education could help school students with the following goals: to gain learning experience and development by means of different sources of new knowledge; to develop habit to learn; to realize the personal need for lifelong education. The model of the unified educational environment is presented.

Linking the knowledge-based view and the intellectual capital view of the firm, this chapter has as its purpose to underline the relevance of a specific component of intellectual capital, namely relational capital, in the knowledge acquisition and transfer processes as well as its influence on a firm’s value creation. The authors used a qualitative research based on a multiple case study, and six Spanish knowledge-intensive firms were analyzed in depth. The results show that the main relational capabilities used by firms to create value through knowledge management are: relationships with customers, suppliers and stakeholders; acquisition of established firms; setting-up of joint ventures; collaboration with Universities, national and international institutions; participation in forums and conferences; publications; advice given by consultants and experts; and benchmarking practices. These capabilities allow firms to acquire and transfer knowledge from the environment where they develop their activity with the aim of obtaining benefits such as innovations; customers, suppliers and stakeholders’ satisfaction; an improvement in the firm’s image and credibility; new knowledge; and learning.

Teaching methods based on inquiry are more and more widely used in teaching natural sciences. In accordance with the new curriculum, introduced to Polish schools in 2008, students should gain new knowledge based on an inquiry. This fact is related to a change of teachers’ approach in the didactic process and a change in the assessment system. This article undertakes an attempt to analyse how a teacher - who has theoretical knowledge in the field of IBSE teaching methods and evaluating students working in this manner - does the said in practice at the level of lower secondary school, during chemistry classes. The presented case study is based on didactic materials developed at the SAILS project. Key words: formative assessment, IBSE, case study, polymers.

FEATURE AT A GLANCE: Today's organizations exist in an ever-changing, global, knowledge-based environment. As such, they expect employees to rapidly gain new knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to ensure the organization's viability. Blended learning, which evolved from e-learning, has been offered as one means to support employee development and organizational viability. A review of the literature makes it clear that most guidance offered to practitioners has focused on the “bells and whistles” of the technology rather than the pedagogical value of blended learning. We offer 10 research-based guidelines to aid in the development of blended learning courses that are theoretically sound, engage trainees, and lead to effective learning outcomes.

Cyberphysical system design automation utilizing knowledge based engineering techniques with globally networked knowledge bases can tremendously improve the design process for emerging systems. Our goal is to develop a comprehensive architectural framework to improve the design process for cyberphysical systems (CPS) and implement a case study with Axiomatic Design Solutions Inc. to develop next generation toolsets utilizing knowledge-based engineering (KBE) systems adapted to multiple domains in the field of CPS design automation. The Cyberphysical System Design Automation Framework (CPSDAF) will be based on advances in CPS design theory based on current research and knowledge collected from global sources automatically via Semantic Web Services. A case study utilizing STEM students is discussed.
