Mixture formation plays as a key element on burning process that strongly affects the exhaust emissions such as nitrogen oxide (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM). The reductions of emissions can be achieved with improvement throughout the mixing of fuel and air behavior. Measurements were made in an optically-accessible rapid compression machine (RCM) with intended to simulate the actual diesel combustion related phenomena. The diesel combustion was simulated with the RCM which is equipped with the Denso single-shot common-rail fuel injection system, capable of a maximum injection pressure up to 160MPa. Diesel engine compression process could be reproduced within the wide range of ambient temperature, ambient density, swirl velocity, equivalence ratio and fuel injection pressure. The mixture formation and combustion images were captured by the high speed camera. Analysis of combustion characteristics and observations of optical visualization of images reveal that the mixture formation exhibit influences to the ignition process and flame development. Therefore, the examination of the first stage of mixture formation is very important consideration due to the fuel-air premixing process linked with the combustion characteristics. Furthermore, the observation of a systematic control of mixture formation with experimental apparatus enables us to achieve considerable improvements of combustion process and would present the information for fundamental understanding in terms of reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

The canonical diesel spray A is characterized in an optical Rapid Compression Machine (RCM) at high temperature and density conditions (900 K and 850 K, ρ = 23 kg/m3) using simultaneous high-speed OH* chemiluminescence and two-pulse 355 nm Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF). The focus is on the time evolution and the repeatability of the early stages of both cool flame and hot ignition phenomena, and on the time evolution of the fluorescing formaldehyde region in between. In particular, time resolved data related to the cool flame are provided. They show the development of several separated kernels on the spray sides at the onset of formaldehyde appearance. Shortly after this phase, the cool flame region expands at high velocity around the kernels and further downstream towards the richer region at the spray head, reaching finally most of the vapor phase region. The position of the first high temperature kernels and their growth are then characterized, with emphasis on the statistics of their location. These time-resolved data are new and they provide further insights into the dynamics of the spray A ignition. They bring some elements on the underlying mechanisms, which will be useful for the validation and improvement of numerical models devoted to diesel spray ignition.

Abstract Cetane number is one of the most important fuel performance metrics for mixing controlled compression-ignition “diesel” engines, quantifying a fuel’s propensity for autoignition when injected into end-of-compression-type temperature and pressure conditions. The historical default and referee method on a Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) engine configured with indirect fuel injection and variable compression ratio is cetane number (CN) rating. A subject fuel is evaluated against primary reference fuel blends, with heptamethylnonane defining a low-reactivity endpoint of CN = 15 and hexadecane defining a high-reactivity endpoint of CN = 100. While the CN scale covers the range from zero (0) to 100, typical testing is in the range of 30 to 65 CN. Alternatively, several constant-volume combustion chamber (CVCC)-based cetane rating devices have been developed to rate fuels with an equivalent derived cetane number (DCN) or indicated cetane number (ICN). These devices measure ignition delay for fuel injected into a fixed volume of high-temperature and high-pressure air to simulate end-of-compression-type conditions. In this study, a range of novel fuel compounds are evaluated across three CVCC methods: the Ignition Quality Tester (IQT), Fuel Ignition Tester (FIT), and Advanced Fuel Ignition Delay Analyzer (AFIDA). Resulting DCNs and ICNs are compared for fuels within the normal diesel fuel range of reactivity, as well as very high (∼100) and very low DCNs/ICNs (∼5). Distinct differences between results from various devices are discussed. This is important to consider because some new, high-efficiency advanced compression-ignition (CI) engine combustion strategies operate with more kinetically controlled distributed combustion as opposed to mixing controlled diffusion flames. These advanced combustion strategies may benefit from new fuel chemistries, but current rating methods of CN, DCN, and ICN may not fully describe their performance. In addition, recent evidence suggests ignition delay in modern on-road diesel engines with high-pressure common rail fuel injection systems may no longer directly correlate to traditional CN fuel ratings. Simulated end-of-compression conditions are compared for CN, DCN, and ICN and discussed in the context of modern diesel engines to provide additional insight. Results highlight the potential need for revised and/or multiple fuel test conditions to measure fuel performance for advanced CI strategies.

Stationary gas turbines for power generation are increasingly being equipped with low emission burners. By applying lean premixed combustion techniques for gaseous fuels both NOx and CO emissions can be reduced to extremely low levels (NOx emissions <25vppm, CO emissions <10vppm). Likewise, if analogous premix techniques can be applied to liquid fuels (diesel oil, Oil No.2, etc.) in gas-fired burners, similar low level emissions when burning oils are possible. For gas turbines which operate with liquid fuel or in dual fuel operation, VPL (Vaporised Premixed Lean)-combustion is essential for obtaining minimal NOx-emissions. An option is to vaporise the liquid fuel in a separate fuel vaporiser and subsequently supply the fuel vapour to the natural gas fuel injection system; this has not been investigated for gas turbine combustion in the past. This paper presents experimental results of atmospheric and high-pressure combustion tests using research premix burners running on vaporised liquid fuel. The following processes were investigated: • evaporation and partial decomposition of the liquid fuel (Oil No.2); • utilisation of low pressure exhaust gases to externally heat the high pressure fuel vaporiser; • operation of ABB premix-burners (EV burners) with vaporised Oil No.2; • combustion characteristics at pressures up to 25bar. Atmospheric VPL-combustion tests using Oil No.2 in ABB EV-burners under simulated gas turbine conditions have successfully produced emissions of NOx below 20vppm and of CO below 10vppm (corrected to 15% O2). 5vppm of these NOx values result from fuel bound nitrogen. Little dependence of these emissions on combustion pressure bas been observed. The techniques employed also ensured combustion with a stable non luminous (blue) flame during transition from gaseous to vaporised fuel. Additionally, no soot accumulation was detectable during combustion.
