The automobile sector which is growing day to day consumes the fossil fuel more than its growth. So there is a demand for exploring new sources of fuels for existing engines. This led to the growth in bio diesels which is an alternate fuel. An alternative fuel must be technically feasible, economically competitive, environmentally acceptable, and readily available. In this project esterified Nerium oil is used as an alternate fuel. A single cylinder stationary kirloskar engine is used to compare the performance and emission characteristics between pure diesel and Nerium blends. In this project selection of suitable nerium blend and selection of optimized injection timing for the blend is done. The Nerium oil blends are in percentage of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% of Nerium oil to 80%, 60%, 40%, 20% & 0% of diesel. From this project it is concluded that among all nerium and diesel blends 20% of nerium and 80% of diesel blend at 30º BTDC gives better performance nearing the diesel. When comparing the emission characteristics HC, CO is reduced when compared to diesel, however NOx emission is slightly increased when compared to diesel. Hence Nerium blend can be used in existing diesel engines with minimum modification in the engine. It also describes the usage of non-edible oil to a greater extent.

In the present work, the combustion, performance and emission characteristics of sunflower oil, sunflower methyl ester and its blends were studied and compared with diesel by employing them as fuel in a single cylinder, direct injection, 4.4 KW, air cooled diesel engine. Emission measurements were carried out using five-gas exhaust gas analyzer and smoke meter. The performance characteristics of Sunflower oil, Sunflower methyl ester and its blends were comparable with those of diesel. The components of exhaust such as HC, CO, NOx and soot concentration of the fuels were measured and presented as a function of load and it was observed that the blends had similar performance and emission characteristics as those of diesel. NOx emissions of sunflower oil methyl ester were slightly higher than that of diesel but that of sunflower oil was slightly lower than that of diesel. With respect to the combustion characteristics it was found that the biofuels have lower ignition delay than diesel. The heat release rate was very high for diesel than for the biofuel.

Limited fossil fuel reservoir capacity and pollution caused by them is the big problem in front of researchers. In the present paper, an attempt was made to find a solution to the same. The conventional fuel injection system was retrofitted with a simple version of the common rail direct injection system for the small diesel engine. Further, the effect of injection system parameters was observed on the performance and emission characteristics of the retrofitted common rail direct injection diesel engine. The parameters such as injection pressure, the start of pilot injection timing, the start of main injection timing and quantity of percentage fuel injection during the pilot and main injection period were considered for experimental investigation. It was observed that all the evaluated parameters were found vital for improving the engine’s performance and emission characteristics. The retrofitted common rail direct injection system shows an average 7% rise in brake thermal efficiency with economic, specific fuel consumption. At the same time, much more reduction in hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and smoke opacity with a penalty of a slight increase in nitrogen oxides.

The aim of this work is to examine the performance, combustion as well as emission characteristics of diesel engine performed for various mixtures of methane-enriched biogas (95% CH4). Experiments were performed on a single cylinder, four-stroke constant speed, direct injection, water-cooled diesel engine. The engine is operated by means of dual fuel mode using diesel and different mixtures of methane-enriched biogas (BG) like BG10, BG20, BG30, and BG40 mixed with the air (i.e. BG40-40% of CH4 by volume respectively) for different loads and at injection timing of 27.5° before top dead centre (bTDC). The performance, combustion and emission characteristics of the engine operated by dual fuel mode were experimentally analyzed, and compared with respect to diesel mode. The experimental result reveals that better performance and lower emissions were observed for BG40 compared to other mixtures. The brake thermal efficiency of BG40 is lower by 2.43% compared to diesel at full load. The cylinder peak pressure for dual fuel mode is higher by 6.55% when compared with diesel mode. NOx emission reduced by 2.6 % and CO emission increased by 3.3% compared to diesel at full load respectively. Keywords: Biogas, Energy, Combustion, Emission, Injection timing, dual fuel mode

This paper presents the properties and application of cashew nut shell oil as blend component for diesel in compression ignition engine. Experimental tests were carried out in a single cylinder, four stroke, direct injection, compression ignition engine fueled with cashew nut shell oil blends. During the experiments, the performance and emission characteristics of the diesel engine was analyzed and compared with the neat diesel fuel performance.
