Students’ higher education institution choice has been widely analyzed over the last four decades. As there is an evident gap in the research of this topic in Serbia, the aim of this study is to shed light on high school students’ choice criteria as a part of the decision-making process with regard to enrolling a particular higher education institution. Aiming to identify the main choice criteria, this study also deals with various factors that influence that choice, such as socio-demographic and personal factors. The survey, conducted in various high schools in Belgrade, was the main method for collecting data. Descriptive statistics accompanied by statistical testing were used for data evaluation. As main choice criteria, two groups of criteria were recognized in this study: the criteria linked to employment opportunities and those related to the international position of the HEI. The main differences in the attitudes of the respondents were the result of the demographic and personal characteristics of high school students, seen as academic aspirations and academic achievements. Relevant managerial and policy implications were outlined in the study, from the perspective of higher education institutions in Serbia, which can adjust their marketing strategy to the characteristics of their target segment, and from the perspective of government institutions that develop the educational policy.

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to determine the dominant factors that influence in choosing a higher education institution for high school and vocational school students in the Bali province. This research is a policy evaluation research with exploratory research design. Data analysis method in this research is quantitative description. The sampling technique used is multistage random sampling. The sample in this research is the students of class XII SMA/SMK in Bali province which has 2.543 students from the total population of 128 schools. Data analysis technique used is AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process). Based on 11 factors studied, it was found that the top 3 ranking related to the most dominant factor in determining the higher education in Bali province that is a motivation to work with eigenvector value = 0,3617, educational cost with eigenvector value = 0,2030, and higher education’s product with eigenvector value = 0,0884. Even if a separate analysis was conducted between high school and vocational school groups, there were similarities between the top three factors that influenced the selection of higher education institutions such as motivation to work, education cost, and product. The results showed that there was no difference between high school and vocational groups on the most dominant factor in the selection of higher education institution, both high school and vocational groups chose the motivation to work is the most dominant factor. This shows that both high school and vocational high school students prioritize for working after graduating from university. Therefore, in the future the higher education institution should further promote the profile of its graduates compared to the university profile. Keywords : the dominant factors of higher education selection, policy evaluation, quantitative description, analytical hierarchy process.

This chapter explores the value of cultural capital in the parental involvement of African American parents of disabled high school students. The traditional approach of parental involvement is widely implemented across public education. The framework for parental involvement is outdated and racially one-sided, which causes the contributions of African American parents to be devalued by their child's school. This chapter focuses on a qualitative study of five African American mothers of disabled high school students and how they engage with their children's public education. The participants provide narrative examples of their cultural capital and they have used it to help benefit their child's education. This implies the need to revise the image of parental involvement to one that is a more diverse inclusionary model, which will help schools better support the academic achievement of students from culturally and linguistically diverse families.

Mattering to others has been shown to be a key construct of mental health and wellness. Emerging research links interpersonal mattering and school climate. In this study, the authors use transcendental phenomenology to explore how interpersonal mattering impacts the academic achievement of urban African American males who are academically successful in high school. Implications for the integration of this new information in school counseling are discussed.
