Measurements on nonlinear processes caused by multiphoton absorption and electron avalanche in optical thin films have been carried out using KrF lasers of 20-ns and 1.7-ps pulse duration. Multiphoton absorption of the order of 10-7 J was detected by a photoacoustic signal, and the nonlinear growth of photo-induced current due to the electron avalanche was analyzed dynamically. The correlation between damage threshold and carrier lifetime was investigated for oxide and fluoride coatings.

In this paper, the micro-structure and laser damage threshold of nano- ZrO 2 thin films were investigated. High-purity nano- ZrO 2 particles as the coating materials of samples were prepared by the electron beams evaporation. The micro-structure and crystallitic size of samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, a laser by 1064nm, 10ns, 3Hz Nd:YAG laser damage test each for nano- ZrO 2 films. The results showed that oxygen partial pressure has an important influence on the micro-structure of nano- ZrO 2 films, also found that the crystallitic size and different micro-structure influenced the laser damage threshold. The obtained results showed that laser damage threshold of polycrystalline structure is obviously higher than that of amorphous structure.

AbstractThis paper presents the results of the bulk laser damage performance of undoped epoxy thermosets with glassy and rubbery mechanical properties and two commercial polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) samples. We demonstrate how thermomechanical properties such as glass transition temperature (Tg) and equilibrium shear modulus (Ge) affect laser damage threshold. The rubbery epoxy elastomer shows a damage threshold fluence one order of magnitude higher than PMMA and 2.5 orders of magnitude higher than a glassy epoxy thermoset. A solid-state guest-host limiter is made by doping the epoxy elastomer with zinc octabromotetraphenylporphyrin (ZnOBP). The limiting performance of the elastomer limiter is compared to a solution of ZnOBP and C60 in toluene. Photochemical hysteresis effects in the solid limiter were also investigated.
