Chiral nematic liquid crystals prepared with Grandjean texture demonstrate a photonic bandgap whose central wavelength is proportional to the pitch length, P, of the liquid crystal and whose width is given by (ne – no)P. We show that methyl red doped chiral nematics undergo a shift in the photonic bandgap upon photo-isomerization. This shift is a result of (1) photo-induced change in anchoring energy on the nematic surface, and (2) change in the natural pitch length from the photo-isomerization of the azo dye.

TiO2 nanomaterials were synthesized in lyotropic liquid crystal formed by nonionic surfactant TritonX-100 and TiOSO4 aqueous solution with NH3•H2O as precipitator. The lyotropic liquid crystals were characterized by means of POM and Low-angle XRD. FT-IR, TGA, XRD, TEM were used to characterize the TiO2 samples. It was found that all the lytropic liquid crystal were in lamellar liquid crysal phase and after casting the micro-structure of the LLC phase, the TiO2 samples were self-assemble to form lamellar, sphere and rod structures. According to the characterization results, possible formation mechanism was proposed.

Active tuning on a plasmonic structure is discussed in this report. We examined the transient transmission effects of an azo-dye-doped liquid crystal cell on a metallic surface grating. The transition between isotropic and nematic phases in liquid crystal generated micro-domains was shown to induce the dynamic scattering of light from a He-Ne laser, thereby allowing transmission through a non-transparent aluminum film overlaying a dielectric grating. Various grating pitches were tested in terms of transmission effects. The patterned gratings include stripe ones and circular forms. Our results indicate that surface plasmon polariton waves are involved in the transmission process. We also demonstrated how momentum diagrams of gratings and Surface Plasmon Polariton (SPP) modes combined with Mie scattering effects could explain the broadband coupling phenomenon. This noteworthy transition process could be applied to the development of spatially broadband surface plasmon polariton coupling devices.
