Although organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE) literature has highlighted the critical role of leadership on the emergence of OCBE, there is still room for further research exploration of how and when leaders influence subordinates’ OCBE. According to social identity theory, we propose a theoretical model that responsible leadership promotes subordinates’ OCBE by examining subordinates’ moral identity as a mediator and individualism as a boundary condition. Using a sample of 273 collected in China, results indicated that responsible leadership was positively related to subordinates’ moral identity, which in turn was positively related to subordinates’ OCBE. Subordinates’ moral identity partially mediated the relationship between responsible leadership and their OCBE. In addition, both the relationship between responsible leadership and subordinates’ moral identity and the indirect relationship between responsible leadership and subordinates’ OCBE were stronger when individualism was lower. These findings provide novel insights into how responsible leadership influences OCBE and how such influence is shaped by subordinates’ individualism.

Perceived reality plays a more prominent role in shaping one's attitudes and behaviors than the actual reality itself. Research on perceived corporate social responsibility (PCSR) has gained interest and this research study examines the specific relationship of PCSR with a discretionary behavioral construct, organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Building upon social theories such as the social identity theory, social exchange theory, social learning theory, and social attribution theory, a conceptual framework is proposed that identifies the impact of internal and external moderators on the PCSR-OCB relationship. Through proposing the impact of external moderators, the researcher aims to bring in objectivity when assessing PCSR, a subjective construct. Further contributions to research and practitioners are highlighted and future avenues for research are discussed.

Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is a prosocial activity with similarities to volunteerism. The purpose of this work is to contribute new evidence about the relevance to OCB of two models of sustained volunteerism, functional analysis and role identity theory. A total of 983 Spanish employees at 49 organizations completed surveys measuring amount of OCB, motives for engaging in citizenship behavior, and the degree to which respondents developed an organizational citizen role identity. The results showed that both motives and role identity were significant predictors of OCB, with motive partially mediating the role identity-OCB relationship. The findings suggest that similar mechanisms are involved in sustaining volunteerism and OCB.

Drawing on social identity theory, the authors demonstrated how and when responsible leadership might relate to employee’s organizational citizenship behavior for the environment (OCBE). Using data collected from 302 subordinates from one service chain hotel in China across 2 phases, this study discussed the influence mechanism of responsible leadership on OCBE, as well as the roles of leader identification and the perceived role of ethics and social responsibility (PRESOR). Empirical results revealed that responsible leadership was positively related to OCBE, and that leader identification played a mediating role between responsible leadership and OCBE. The relationship between leader identification and OCBE was positively moderated by PRESOR, which also moderated the indirect effect of responsible leadership on OCBE through leader identification, such that this relationship was stronger when PRESOR was high. Finally, we outlined the theoretical and practical implications and proposed some promising aspects and value variables for future research.

Even though research on the micro-effects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been growing, our understanding of the psychological mechanisms through which perceived CSR affects employees’ organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) remains insufficient. Based on social identity theory and the concept of whole self, this study examines the mediating role of meaning orientation as a psychological mechanism and tests the moderating role of grit, using survey data collected from 361 South Korean workers. Our results show that the positive association between perceived CSR and OCB is mediated by meaning orientation. In addition, grit strengthens the perceived CSR-meaning orientation relationship, which in turn boosts employees’ OCB. This study contributes to the literature by revealing a psychological mechanism and how it is moderated by individual traits, which are crucial in predicting CSR’s micro-effects. We discuss how our results can be practically applied by organizations as part of sustainable human resource management.

Zusammenfassung: Einer größeren Lehrerstichprobe (N = 434), die hinsichtlich verschiedener demographischer Merkmale heterogen ist, wird der AVEM (Arbeitsbezogenes Verhaltens- und Erlebensmuster; Schaarschmidt & Fischer, 1996 , 1997 ) vorgelegt. Als Kriteriumsvariablen werden körperliche Beschwerden, Fehltage, berufliche Belastungen, Pensionierungsabsichten sowie Organizational Citizenship Behavior ( Organ, 1988 ) erfragt. Teilstichproben beantworten zusätzlich Skalen zu Copingverhalten, Sozialer Unterstützung, Kompetenzerwartung sowie eine an den Lehrerberuf adaptierte Version des Job Diagnostic Survey ( Hackman & Oldham, 1980 ). Faktoren- und Reliabilitätsanalysen replizieren die Ergebnisse von Schaarschmidt und Fischer. Eine Clusteranalyse ergibt vier Muster, von denen drei Muster der von Schaarschmidt und Fischer postulierten Einteilung entsprechen; ein viertes Muster weicht von dieser Klassifikation ab. Eine zweite Studie mit N = 283 Lehrerinnen und Lehrern kann die Lösung der ersten Clusteranalyse replizieren. Die Zusammenhänge belegen insgesamt eine gute konvergente, diskriminante und Kriteriumsvalidität und weisen den AVEM als brauchbares Messinstrument zur Analyse von Belastung und Beanspruchung im Lehrerberuf aus.
