Background: While previous studies explored the implementation and barriers to evidence-based practice (EBP), there is a dearth of literature on the causative factors such as demographics that affect the implementation and barriers to EBP.Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the implementation of EBP and determine its barriers as perceived by nurse practitioners.Methods: This study employed a quantitative correlational design. A total of 228 staff nurses from the hospitals in the Hail region, Saudi Arabia, participated in this study through purposive sampling. The evidence-based practice questionnaire (EBPQ) and the barriers scale questionnaire were used to collect the data between June and July 2020. The descriptive statistics, t-test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the collected data.Results: The nurses showed a positive attitude (x=15.25±5.07), good knowledge (x=63.44±19.81), as well as good application of EBP (x=28.02±6.68) with an outstanding EBP score of 106.73 out of 168. Nurses’ civil status (p<0.02), nationality (p<0.05), highest degree (p<0.01), job title (p<0.001), and years of experience (p<0.001) significantly affected the implementation of EBP. Also, the biggest barriers to EBP were: “No time to read research” (94.3%), “Research is not readily available” (97.8%), “Not capable to evaluate the quality of research” (90.4 %), and “Uncertain whether to believe results” (68.4%).Conclusion: Nurses have a positive attitude, good knowledge, and good application of EBP. Civil status, nationality, highest degree, job title, and years of experience were causative factors to EBP. Nurses in hospitals should undergo training continuously to be able to use EBP effectively.

The goal of this study was to explore the evidence-based practice (EBP) pattern among speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists in Saudi Arabia. A total of 48 clinicians working in Saudi Arabia completed a questionnaire that investigated patterns, attitudes, skills, and time and resources at the workplace related to EBP. The results showed that SLPs and audiologists held favorable attitudes toward EBP, and the use of research studies to guide clinical decision making was increased among the participants with previous EBP training. Also, the study found that skills and knowledge related to EBP need to be enhanced, but they were not major barriers to EBP implementation. Limited resources appeared to impose some hindrances, whereas insufficient time at the workplace was found to be a major challenge for EBP implementation. Overall, the findings from this study highlight the importance of increasing the continuing education and professional time for EBP activities in the workplace.

The purpose of this mixed-methods sequential explanatory study was to explore self-efficacy of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) employed in various settings. Self-efficacy of master's level SLPs was compared across settings to determine if differences existed in each of four experience groups. Self-efficacy ratings were also compared based on degree held, area of practice, and years of experience. Participants (n = 342) completed a survey containing 10 demographic questions, 11 items from Salbach and Jaglal's (2010) Evidence-Based Practice Confidence (EPIC) scale, and 2 open-ended questions regarding factors impacting self-efficacy. Participants (n=34) completed semi structured interviews to further explore factors influencing self-efficacy. No significant difference was noted in self-efficacy of master's level SLPs among settings. There was a significant difference between self-efficacy ratings based on degree held and years of experience. A significant difference in self-efficacy was found based on practice category (i.e., identification of knowledge gap, critical appraisal of research, development of treatment plans based on evidence, clinical judgment, and client preferences). Qualitative analysis revealed graduate program and post-graduate factors which impacted self efficacy ratings both positively and negatively.

Evidence-based practice provides the most effective care that is available with the aim of improving clients’ outcome. However, despite existing policies related to encouragement to or requirement of evidence-based practice (EBP), results of reviewed studies show nurses do not generally incorporate research evidence in their daily practice. This study aimed to assess nurses’ attitudes towards knowledge and use of EBP in a teaching hospital in Kuala Lumpur. This study used descriptive cross-sectional survey among 265 nurses (out of 851), working in the different adult medical-surgical wards, who were selected through the quota sampling. Participants in this study, reported positive attitudes towards EBP, good knowledge of EBP, but poor utilization of evidence in their practice. Results of this study affirmed the findings of previous researches, showed despite having positive attitude and perception of good knowledge/skill regarding EBP; nurses did not incorporate evidence into practice. Application of EBP in clinical setting increases the quality of patient care, clients’ outcome and nurses’ job satisfaction and retention. In this regard, nursing managers and authorities have an important role in providing supports, facilities and persuading environment to focus nurses on evidence-based practice. It is recommended that the effect of personal and professional agents on actual EBP activities among nurses should be assessed through the observational studies rather than self-report questionnaire.

Parental beliefs about vaccination are one of the main factors in reaching high vaccination rates. This cross-sectional study aims to assess the awareness and attitudes regarding routine childhood immunization among Saudi parents in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This survey, with a pretested 18-item questionnaire, was conducted on parents having at least one child from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between 1 May 2019 and 1 November 2019. The validated questionnaire consisted of three sections; participants’ demographics, awareness, and attitude regarding the immunization of their children. In total, 1200 parents participated in the study, 883 (73.3%) of the parents scored a good knowledge of childhood immunization, and 93% knew that routine vaccination protects children from infectious diseases and their complications. Around 10% stated that immunization can cause autism. Only parents in age groups 30–39 and 40–49 were 1.76 (p < 0.05) times and 1.92 (p < 0.05) times, respectively, more likely to exhibit good knowledge. About 522 (43.6) of the parents attained a positive attitude toward immunization. Adherence to the immunization schedule was confirmed important by 93%, while 91% presumed that immunization keeps their children healthy. Additionally, immunization was perceived as important by 94% of parents and only 8% agreed that immunization is prohibited by religion. Females were 1.45 (p < 0.05) times more likely to exhibit positive attitudes than males. Parents have good knowledge and a positive attitude towards child immunization. However, parental education should be focused on the fact that religion supports immunization, and more awareness should be focused on the lack of correlation between autism and vaccination.
