This chapter aims to provide an elementary background on lean methodologies from its beginnings at Toyota through current applications of lean processes at local companies. Via case studies, a greater understanding of the advantages of lean systems will be attempted along with a discussion of the future of lean practices. Notable improvements to the lean philosophy, such as successful implementation of six-sigma techniques, are addressed through interdisciplinary case studies of successful best business practices. Therefore, we need a cluster of metrics, certainly more than just cost. If we cannot adequately measure customer satisfaction and utility, we need to have more subjective ways to measure it in order to understand its complexities. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that there is a one-size-fits-all solution, as many managers are more prone to try something that has worked elsewhere in times of crisis, but has limited applications to other dissimilar problems.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to articulate clear understanding about the role of enterprise information systems (EIS) in developing innovative business practices. Particularly, it aims to explore the different ways that make EIS enables innovation development. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopted exploratory case study, based on qualitative approach. Investigations included two case studies each involved interviewing a number of senior information technology staff, working at these cases. Findings – The paper provides empirical insights about the EIS role in enabling innovation. The analysis of the case studies revealed that integrating an EIS with other system(s) or with digital devices can provide new practices that could not be easily available without these technologies. The study also found that applying data analytics tools into data accumulated from EIS, to extract new insights, lead to innovative practices. Practical implications – The study provides a set of recommendations for organizations interested to maximize the benefits from their investments in EIS. Originality/value – The paper provides evidences from cases in United Arab Emirates for the EIS role in enabling business innovation.

Thirty-five years ago researchers established a taxonomy of retail financial ratios. During the intervening period, extensive changes in retailing practices have been accompanied by equally extensive changes in financial reporting, marketing and management methods. Financial reporting standards have adapted to reflect these new domestic and international business practices, while technological innovation has produced continually evolving hardware and software advancements. This study investigates the extent to which the taxonomy of retail financial ratios has changed and, if justified, will establish a revised taxonomy. It extends prior work in two ways. First, it utilizes advanced statistical methodologies and computing technologies to provide a more discriminating investigation than previous researchers were capable of conducting. Second, this study investigates the current taxonomy of retail industry financial ratios as well as its stability over a ten-year period. Our findings identify a shift in the retail sector taxonomy of financial ratios. Empirical analysis points to a taxonomy consisting of five factors: capital intensiveness, cash position, inventory turnover, return on assets-return on sales, and return on equity-leverage. Contrary to expectations, a separate operating cash flow factor was not identified, despite the emergence of a mandatory cash flow statement during the intervening period. These findings provide an empirical basis to formulate testable hypotheses regarding the predictive and descriptive utility of retail financial ratios.

Purpose- Akad tijarah as a form of trade agreement has several types, in which needs to be adjusted to each necessity. It is important for related parties to understand what and how akad ijarah works. This article analyses how far the contribution of an Islamic microfinance institution (LKMS) nowadays, considering there are nash (Al-Qur’an and Al-Hadits) and also fatwa the national sharia council (DSN) MUI. Methods- Case studies and literature reviews are used to evaluate sharia business practices in BMT. Findings- Sharia microfinance institutions, in this case, BMT TUMANG, have carried out sharia principles in practice, especially for tijarah agreements with documents in the form of SOM and SOP as well as financing contracts (agreements), both in the principle of sale and profit-sharing. Implications/Limitations- This study is limited to one branch of the BMT so it cannot describe the overall practice carried out in other regions.
