ENERGY-EFFICIENT URBAN DESIGN: PRINCIPLES AND STRATEGIES

<p>Architecture can be regarded as both a product for the retail environment and as a medium which can influence change in contemporary society. Within the context of the retail environment, architecture becomes intrinsically associated with the concepts of business sustainability because of the needs from investors challenging the needs of the public. Business sustainability within the retail environment is concerned with the success of the tenants occupying the investors' assets whilst the architectural sustainability focuses upon the public acceptance of the space that is transformed once being constructed and in the future. Furthermore, the architecture within the retail environment encapsulates the utilisation of space, crime and neglect prevention, retail attractiveness and targeting users through urban design principles. The research identifies the gap between the urban design principles and the individual business success within the inner-city. This thesis explores the coordination of the urban design principles and shopping mall design principles upon the existing urban fabric which is set to revitalise and improve dilapidated areas within the Wellington inner-city. This is to not only improve the retail location, but also the residential environment which is ever increasing. The shopping mall design principles have been integrated into the retail urban fabric and as the research states, shopping mall design is more successful than the individual street retail by improving the productivity of the businesses as well as allowing a higher grade of space to be created with the additional income and mutual design motivation. Although the shopping mall design principles are traditionally implemented upon a single ownership environment and as such allows a decision to be made through a single official, the inner-city is filled with multiple owners upon the one site which adds limitations to the design that can be manipulated. As such, this thesis designs as though the site is organised under a collective, allowing a common goal to be achieved. The important successful shopping mall design principles have been segregated into four clusters; anchors, configuration, interior aesthetic and control. These clusters combined with the common urban design principles allow the individual small business owners to challenge the large-scale retail businesses putting them out of business. Also, national and international urban and shopping mall precedents have been analysed as showing physical representations of the research studied in the literature review. The design being placed upon a dilapidated area within the Wellington inner-city the success of the design case study will determine the future success of the idea migrating into other areas of Wellington's inner-city. The idea that beginning the concept in the worst case scenario would allow the design to act as a catalyst for growth into already established market areas such as Cuba Street and Courtenay Place.</p>

<p>By exploring interactions between architecture, urban design and sociology, this thesis seeks to highlight the disconnection between these disciplines and how they can be integrated into a robust framework. The central question driving this investigation is how integrating third place theory with urban design principles can support and nurture communities within the public realm. In order to achieve this, the thesis outlines third place theory in conjunction with the core urban design principles and highlights the benefits and value by bringing these together. The outcome is an integrated novel framework that effectively brings these bodies of knowledge together.</p>

Aim. In today’s major cities, increased utilization and capacity of the rapid transit systems (metro, light rail, commuter trains with stops within the city limits) – under condi[1]tions of positive traffic safety – is achieved through smart automatic train traffic management. The aim of this paper is to choose and substantiate the design principles and architecture of such system.Methods. Using systems analysis, the design principles and architecture of the system are substantiated. Genetic algorithms allow automating train traffic planning. Methods of the optimal control theory allow managing energy-efficient train movement patterns along open lines, assigning individual station-to-station running times following the principle of mini[1]mal energy consumption, developing energy-efficient target traffic schedules. Methods of the automatic control theory are used for selecting and substantiating the train traffic algorithms at various functional levels, for constructing random disturbance extrapolators that minimize the number of train stops between stations.Results. Development and substantiation of the design principles and architecture of a centralized intelligent hierarchical system for automatic rapid transit traffic management. The distribution of functions between the hierarchy levels is described, the set of subsystems is shown that implement the purpose of management, i.e., ensuring traffic safety and comfort of passengers. The criteria are defined and substantiated of management quality under compensated and non-compensated disturbances. Traffic management and target scheduling automation algorithms are examined. The application of decision algorithms is demonstrated in the context of uncertainty, use of disturbance prediction and genetic algorithms for the purpose of train traffic planning automation. The design principles of the algorithms of traffic planning and management are shown that ensure reduced traction energy consumption. The efficiency of centralized intelligent rapid transit management system is demonstrated; the fundamental role of the system in the digitalization of the transport system is noted.Conclusion. The examined design principles and operating algorithms of a centralized intelligent rapid transit management system showed the efficiency of such systems that ensured by the following: increased capacity of the rapid transit system; improved energy efficiency of train traffic planning and management; improved train traffic safety; assurance of operational traffic management during emergencies and major traffic disruptions; improved passenger comfort.

In this master thesis, a research process for obtaining a creative solution which will contribute to solving problems created by the "urban jungle" we live in, and will help for the general improvement of people's mental health is presented. This goal is achieved by a detailed interdisciplinary research and application of modern methods and principles in the field of industrial design. The research allowed a better view of the problem-lack of adequate spaces in the city for productive time spending and increasing positive moods-that needs to be solved, and better defining of the main needs and desires of the target group from which the concepts and ideas emerged. Generally, this research, besides the theoretical analysis of the subject positive design, contains ethnographic research methods like observation of the target group, collecting photo materials, analysis of different situations, informative polls, analysis and systematization of data. In addition, the research is complemented in the field of urban design from aspect of analysis of the urban design principles, design for good mental health, existing ideas of urban solutions around the world and in Macedonia, and also, application of modular systems, ergonomics and inspiration from nature for eco design in urbanism. As a result of all the research done in this master thesis, an innovative, urban pavilion was designed. Pavilion which would achieve the goal-stress reduction and alleviating the everyday life of residents of modern cities. Also, the need for increasing awareness about the significance of positive design in the modern lifestyle was promoted, since design is the main element in all our surroundings that allows possibilities for deep influence in the way we think and feel which means that it can be used as a tool to improve the general wellbeing and society advancement.

Sandy shores worldwide suffer from coastal erosion due to a lack of sediment input and sea-level rise. In response, coastal sand nourishments are executed using ‘Building with Nature’ techniques (BwN), in which the sand balance is amplified and natural dynamics are instrumental in the redistribution of sand, cross- and alongshore. These nourishments contribute to the growth of beaches and dunes, serving various design objectives (such as flood safety, nature, and recreation). Nevertheless, human interference (such as buildings and traffic) along urbanized sandy shores may have significant, yet poorly understood, effects on beach and dune development. Better insight is required into the interplay of morphological, ecological and urban processes to support Aeolian BwN processes for dune formation and contribute to the sustainable design of urbanized coastal zones. This paper aims to bridge the gap between coastal engineering and urban design by formulating design principles for BwN along urbanized sandy shores, combining nourishments, natural dune formation and urban development on a local scale to strengthen the coastal buffer. The first part of the paper analyses sedimentation processes in the (built) sea-land interface and identifies spatial mechanisms that relate coastal occupation to dune formation. Hence a preliminary set of design principles is derived by manipulating wind-driven sediment transport for BwN dune formation after nourishment. In the second part of the paper, these principles are applied and contextualized in two case-studies to compare their capability for BwN in different coastal profiles: the vast, rural, geomorphologically high dynamic profile of a mega-nourishment (Sand Motor); versus the compact, highly urbanized, profile(s) of a coastal resort (Noordwijk). Conclusions reflect on the applicability of BwN design principles within different coastal settings (dynamics, urbanity) and spatial arrangements facilitating BwN dune formation.
