Abstract Research-oriented programs related to pre-service teacher education are practically non-existent in many countries. Since in Portugal we now have a stable legal system for initial teacher training, how can we help these countries to respond to their teacher training needs and accomplish these same standards? How can we create an international program at MA level that could serve such an objective? What are the research priorities for teachers in primary and secondary education? I will claim for a new general research policy using small-scale research projects in foreign language teaching (FLT), which illustrated a turning point in advanced research in foreign languages teacher training. Presently, researchers no longer narrow their inquiries into linguistic questions or school and student-centered actions. Instead, they focus on a range of issues such as teacher-centered actions, beliefs and policies, and aspects of FLT such as literacy education, special educational needs or methods for teaching gifted students. Despite a lack of funding at all levels, many research projects in teacher education have been undertaken, and new areas have been explored, such as didactic transposition, literary and information literacies, intercultural learning, corpora in FLT, new information and communication technologies in FLT, interlingual inferencing, national standards for foreign language education, FLT for specific purposes, digital narratives in education, CLIL, assessment, and language learning behaviors. This small sample of the many areas covered proves that advanced research in teacher education can also be very useful to promote the growing interest in further internationalization in other sciences (beyond human and social areas) traditionally linked to politics, business and industry (computing, chemistry, biology, medicine, etc.), something that can only be attained by focusing on multilingualism, multi-literacy and lifelong learning.

Abstract:How does one become a teacher? What makes a teacher? How does initial teacher training influence the development of professionalism and identity as a teacher? Faced with these questions, the aim of the research paper titled "The development of professional knowledge through the Primary Teacher Education Degree programme. Students’ and teachers’ perspectives" (EDU2012-39866-C02-02) is to understand the processes students undergo in the construction of their professional identity while pursuing a Primary Teacher Education Degree at the University of Barcelona. Following a qualitative type methodology based on case study, we used various data collection tools (such as stories, discussion groups and interviews) that allowed us to gain greater insight into the viewpoint of students, university teaching staff and cooperating teachers. In light of the results obtained, it is possible to determine the influence of previous experiences embedded in the high motivational levels of these students. Then, as they advance through their training, they begin to acquire hints of the reality of teaching and gradually assume a teacher’s frame of mind, less anchored in the student's perspective. The most important milestone in the construction of a teacher identity occurs during teaching practice; the setting in which a teacher’s ideas, expectations, preconceptions, etc. are put to the test. Accompanying the transition from the initial idealisation of the school and the teacher towards greater professionalism and the construction a teacher’s own identity are key functions of the initial teacher training.

The unprecedented growth in the quantity, as well as quality of publications on language teacher education supported by the domain’s increasing experiential background opens up new avenues for enhancing the effectiveness of foreign language teacher education in Ukraine. Hence, the present paper aims at analyzing and singling out recurrent research themes, defining the mainstream approaches of the field of language teacher education, which constitute the emerging theoretical foundations of the field’s knowledge base. The review of the state-of-the-art publications has enabled the specification of the following research areas, pertinent to foreign language teacher education: language teacher cognition, the knowledge base of language teachers, language teacher identity, reflection, language teacher research and action research, language teacher professionalism, the role of teacher education, effectiveness of teaching, expertise, competence, teacher development and some others. The analysis of research suggests overall proliferation of the number of studies on the problem of language teacher education during the past 30˗40 years. Nevertheless, the comparison of the volume of studies highlighting general aspects of teacher education to those specifically related to foreign/second language teacher education reveals the quantitative advantage of the former. More efforts are needed at elaborating language teacher focused issues which stem from the nature of foreign language as a discipline, the socio-cultural role of language teachers and the role of foreign language in particular. Further limitations of the field-related research base, include: 1) a rather small proportion of empirical studies, necessary to provide informed answers for important questions of language teacher education; 2) the majority of available empirical studies are small-scale and contextually limited, which excludes the possibility of generalizations; 3) the field’s overall reliance on traditions, intuition and practical experience, with little regard for theoretical foundations; 4) paucity of research that present systematic complex generalizations of the field’s knowledge base;

The focus of this paper is the teacher learning of trainee teachers of English as a second, other or foreign language to adults, within a particular model of initial teacher training: Teaching Practice Groups. It draws on socio-constructive theories of teacher learning to explore the learning of trainees within the model. Teaching Practice Groups are highly social; trainees on courses using the model interact a great deal with each other, with their peers, with the learners in the teaching practice classroom, and also with the course documentation and activities. This paper suggests that these interactions, and the consequent development of trainees’ knowledge and understanding of teaching, are scaffolded in both ‘designed-in’ and ‘contingent’ ways (Hammond & Gibbons 2005: 12). Designed-in scaffolding can be seen in the way the course is structured, in the activities that learners are expected to engage with, and in the documents and processes through which these processes are managed. Contingent scaffolding on the other hand, the spontaneous actions and guidance of the trainer in response to the immediate learning needs of the trainee teacher, is unplanned. While the findings from this study are specific to the context of Teaching Practice Groups, this paper also offers a contribution to more general knowledge about initial teacher training for English language teachers.

Content, Language and Method Integrated Teacher Training (CLMITT) is an educational model for teacher training developed by the author. It refers to an approach where trainees learn teaching methodologies through experiencing them while simultaneously integrating English language development into the training process. CLMITT can be used to train teachers in any context where the course content includes teaching strategies, skills, approaches or methods and where trainees also need to learn English (or another foreign language). Therefore, it is an ideal approach for training non-native English speaker teachers. Applying CLMITT involves the teacher trainer teaching a classroom method or technique by using that method itself during training sessions while using materials about that method. In this way, the content of the session and the method used to teach the session are the same, and trainees are not only learning about a teaching model or strategy but also experiencing it in action from a student perspective at the same time. In addition, they are also improving their English, since the whole exercise takes place in English. CLMITT can be applied in Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Programs as well as Continuous Professional Development courses. Trainee feedback after a CLMITT session showed that students felt it provided them with a much deeper understanding of the methods, approaches and strategies covered, while at the same time improving their English during the process.

The main subject of the research is implementation of information and communication technologies in teacher education system of Nordic countries. The article offers a comparative analysis of the main stages in the ICT development in the professional teacher training systems of four developed countries in the Scandinavian region: Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, which are world leaders in the impact of ICT on education and society and have gained a positive experience in creating their own strategies for reforming of all the important teacher education components based on the widespread use of modern information and communication technologies. The author considers that one of the key factors explaining Nordic innovation and digital literacy strength lies in the fact that the progress of using ICT in the system of professional teacher training has taken place in parallel with the processes of informatization, computerization, technological changes and prioritization of the 21-st century skills development in all countries of the Nordic region. Three essential stages of ICT implementation in Nordic educational environment were substantiated. The first is induction (or introductory) stage, connected with the gradual implementation of computer technologies into the educational process. The second is infusion (or partial use) stage, distinguished by joining all the educational institutions to the worldwide information systems. The third is incorporation (or systematic integration) stage, identified by the conceptualization of ICT-related teacher education. These three stages are characterized by the main similar and different principles of the information technologies use in the Nordic pedagogic dimension. The research findings may help to efficiently implement the information and communication technologies into the system of Ukrainian teacher education.

The paper concerns the discursive dimension of the construction and the circulation of knowledge connected with the issue of foreign language teacher education. A starting point for the discussion is the assumption according to which glottodidactics as a science is still perceived in a highly heterogenic way by members of the Polish glottodidactic community. Not only is the subject of glottodidactics so complex and interdisciplinary that the multitude of its possible interpretations does not allow us to decide on one common epistemological paradigm, but glottodidactic discourse is also very heterogeneous. The author of this article presents the conclusions from a metaglottodidactic analysis of articles covering the subject of foreign language teacher training which were published in Neofilolog in 1990–2010, and answers the question of whether, and with what kind of discourse configurations do Polish glottodidacticians theoretically locate their propositions for educating teachers presented in their publications.
