Abstract The trophic state of ten dam reservoirs was assessed using a zooplankton community. In order to determine the trophic state of dam reservoirs, we used indices calculated on the basis of density and species structure of Rotifera and Crustacea communities. Samples were collected once during summer 2012 in ten dam reservoirs. The largest numbers of zooplankton taxa were found in a lowland high meso-eutrophic dam reservoir (Koronowski) and the lowest ones in a submontane low eutrophic dam reservoir (Lubachowski). The trophic state was determined for the investigated dam reservoirs. In the case of the Rotifera community, the percentage of the tecta form in the Keratella cochlearis population and the proportion of high-trophic species in the total species density were the best indices to describe the water trophic status. In the case of the crustacean community, the best indices were the density of Crustacea and the biomass of Cyclopoida. The high value of all indices calculated on the basis of density and species structure of Rotifera and Crustacea was determined for Zygmunt August Lake, whose trophic status was defined as highly eutrophic to polytrophic. Our study has shown that zooplankton could be a good ecosystem indicator of the water trophic level in dam reservoirs.

Eutrophication is currently a global threat to all types of aquatic ecosystems leading to a disturbance of their ecological balance and a deterioration of water quality. This problem is especially true for dam reservoirs, which play a key role in the economy of each country, being an important source of water supply. It is also a primary problem for all types of surface waters in Poland. Effective eutrophication abatement strategies should be based on reliable information about the actual trophic status of waters which in turn should be obtained with fast, accurate and low-cost monitoring. The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibility of the application of aggregated numerical indicators as an effective tool for the assessment of water trophic status and prove it using the example of the trophic state assessment of the Dobczyce dam reservoir. For this purpose, three numerical indicators elaborated by different authors were used.

AbstractWe have determined how Crustacea, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha), fish and nutrients affect the trophic state in mesocosms filled with water collected from the pelagic zone of a eutrophic lake. We hypothesized that the pool of nutrients would increase both directly due to the input of phosphorus and nitrogen and/or indirectly due to the introduction of animal biomass. We used trophic state indices based on the abundance and species structure of rotifers to assess changes in the trophic state in mesocosms. The role of small detritophages in rotifer communities increased as a result of treatments. Our results clearly demonstrated that D. polymorpha was able to reduce the trophic status of mesocosm waters as indicated by reduced rotifer trophic state indices regardless of interactions with other treatment factors. Contrary to our expectations, neither the nutrients added at the beginning of the experiment nor the introduction of crustaceans or fish affected the rotifer trophic indices.

The objective of this study was to analyze variations in the planktonic rotifer community in a lake subjected to hypolimnetic withdrawal. The present study is also the first attempt to estimate the effects of changes in hypolimnion water withdrawal rates on the zooplankton community. The lake is located in northeastern Poland. Zooplankton were sampled in 1986, 2004 and 2013. Standard protocols of zooplankton sampling and elaboration were applied. Rotifer abundance, wet biomass, community structure, and species diversity were studied at different intensities of hypolimnetic water withdrawal. Trophic state indices based on rotifer abundance and species structure were used to evaluate changes in the trophic state of the lake. Our results showed increased planktonic rotifer species diversity over a period of years, which was a positive outcome of the restoration measures. Lower hypolimnetic withdrawal rates seemed to favor the development of a diverse rotifer community. Conversely, qualitative changes in zooplankton structure and a zooplankton-based assessment of the lake trophic state indicated that water eutrophication was progressing. Despite modifications to the operation of the pipeline, no significant differences in rotifer abundance or biomass were detected between the sites in each year or among years at each site.

The species composition and abundance of the zooplankton community of seven reservoirs of the Paranapanema River, located between 22º37'-23º11'S and 48º55'-50º32'W, were analysed over four periods, in the year of 1979. The zooplankton community was composed of 76 species of Rotifera, 26 species of Cladocera and 7 species of Copepoda. For a large part of the period under study the Rotifera were dominant, followed by Copepoda. The Piraju and Salto Grande reservoirs, which occupy intermediate positions in the cascade of reservoirs, were richest in species, most of them belonging to Rotifera and Cladocera. In the reservoirs Rio Pari and Rio Novo, lateral to the cascade of reservoirs, a lower species richness was observed, although higher densities of organisms were found than in the other reservoirs located in the main river body. Different rotifer species occurred in succession, being abundant in different periods, with no defined pattern. Among the copepods, Thermocyclops decipiens predominated in the majority of the reservoirs. Ceriodaphnia cornuta was the most abundant cladoceran in the intermediate reservoirs of the cascade, and Daphnia gessneri, Bosminopsis deitersi and Moina minuta, in the reservoirs lateral to the cascade. The most frequent zooplankton species were Notodiaptomus conifer, Thermocyclops decipiens, Ceriodaphnia cornuta cornuta and C. cornuta rigaudi, Daphnia gessneri, Bosmina hagmanni, Keratella cochlearis and Polyarthra vulgaris. Some relationships were found between the trophic state of the reservoirs and the zooplankton community.

The hydrodynamics of dam reservoirs favor the accumulation of phosphorus (P) in bottom sediments since it has a strong affinity for the sedimentary particles. However mechanical disturbance of sediment (resuspension) may release P back to water column. The load of sedimentary P poses a serious ecological problem related to the maintaining of water eutrophication. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of sediments, accumulated in Champsanglard reservoir (Central France), to release water-mobilizable colloidal and dissolved P. A sampling campaign was carried out at different locations along the main channel of reservoir from riverine to lacustrine area and characterized by different hydrodynamics. The results showed that colloids are intrinsic component of reservoir sediment and contribute up to 2.3% of sediment mass. Colloidal P attributed up to 6% of total sedimentary P and 80% of water-mobilizable P (fraction < 1 µm). The stock of water-mobilizable colloids and associated P varied according to particle size distribution and was strongly dependent to channel morphology, hydrodynamics and inlet of tributary.

Keywords: Dam reservoir, sedimentary colloids, phosphorus form, spatial variability

ABSTRACT High levels of eutrophication in coastal lagoons due to human activity have been documented worldwide. Among the main impacts observed are anoxia, hypoxia, toxic algal blooms, fish kills, loss of biodiversity and loss of bathing. This study aimed to evaluate the evolution of the trophic state of Lagoa da Conceição, a subtropical lagoon located in an urbanized watershed on the island of Santa Catarina - Brazil. Spatio temporal patterns of stratification and eutrophication were investigated to understand the main biochemical changes over time. The water quality data were obtained from field campaigns supplemented with literature of the last 15 years. The vertical structure of the water column and the trophic state were evaluated by the stratification index and the TRIX index, respectively. Analyses of variance were performed in order to identify possible temporal variations in vertical stratification and trophic level. Eutrophication effects on biogeochemical cycles were verified through a multi-dimensional cluster analysis (MDS) and correlations between variables related to physical, chemical and biological processes were verified by principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that the water column is homogeneous in all regions except in the central region of the lagoon, and the highest ammonia concentrations and lowest dissolved oxygen concentrations with periods of anoxia are observed in bottom waters. The study looked at the high trophic level of the lagoon and its inability to process the biogeochemical changes imposed by urban development.

The fluctuation of the population of Daphnia laevis in Lake Jacaré (Middle River Doce, Minas Gerais) was monitored monthly (at one point in the limnetic region) for six years (2002-2007) as part of the Program of Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER/UFMG). The following parameters were also monitored: water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, total phosphorus, phosphate, total nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and densities of Chaoborus and ephippia of Daphnia laevis in the sediment. A seasonal pattern was observed in the fluctuation of D. laevis, with higher densities recorded during periods of circulation (May-August). A significant correlation was found between the density of D. laevis and temperature (r = -0.47, p = 0.0001), chlorophyll-a (r = -0.32, p = 0.016) and indicators of the lake's trophic status (total phosphorus, r = 0.32, p = 0.007 and trophic state, r = 0.36, p = 0.003), as well as Chaoborus density (r = 0.43 and p = 0.002). These results indicate that changes in the physical and chemical characteristics of the water related with stratification and circulation of the lake may have a direct (temperature, total phosphorous) or an indirect (food availability, presence of predators, ephippia eclosion) influence on the fluctuation of the D. laevis population.
