AbstractCyanine dyes are characterized by an odd number 2n + 3 of π-centers and 2n + 4 π-electrons (where n is the number of vinyl groups –CH = CH–). This special feature has a marked impact on their electronic structure and thus their equilibrium structure in the electronic ground state as well their color and electronic spectrum, respectively. Their first technical application was the use as spectral sensitizers in silver halide photography. Today they have numerous of applications in digital optical data storage, Computer-to-Plate lithographic printing plates, bio-analysis and medical diagnostics.

An unsymmetrical diarylethene derivative bearing both benzothienyl and thienyl moieties, in which a malononitrile group was substituted at the 5-position of the thienyl ring, was synthesized. This compound undergo a reversible electrocyclic rearrangement, generating strongly colored closed-ring isomer upon irradiation with UV-light which show nonfluorescence, while exposure to light in the visible range triggers the cycloreversion to the colorless open-ring form that exhibits strong fluorescence properties. This properties of molecular photochromism were developed that showed both photo switches and fluorescence switches. The erasable and rewritable photo-images on this photochromic diarylethene were successfully demonstrated. This developments are crucial for fundamental research and eventual technical application for high-density optical data storage.

Abstract Oxonol dyes are classified as anionic polymethine dyes, which cover a wide variety of structural types. The name of the class originates from the oxygen atoms which terminate each end of the polymethine chains that form the backbone of their structure. In technically useful dyes, these oxygen atoms tend to be substituents of heterocycles. The main technical application of water soluble oxonol dyes was in silver halide photography as filter dyes and antihalation dyes. Lipophilic oxonol dyes are used in bio-analysis and medical diagnostics to stain cells, bacteria or liposomes for example. Their main bioanalytical usage is in the determination of membrane potentials in eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic bacteria.

AbstractThe lack of order in amorphous chalcogenides offers them novel properties but also adds increased challenges in the discovery and design of advanced functional materials. The amorphous compositions in the Si–Ge–Te system are of interest for many applications such as optical data storage, optical sensors and Ovonic threshold switches. But an extended exploration of this system is still missing. In this study, magnetron co-sputtering is used for the combinatorial synthesis of thin film libraries, outside the glass formation domain. Compositional, structural and optical properties are investigated and discussed in the framework of topological constraint theory. The materials in the library are classified as stressed-rigid amorphous networks. The bandgap is heavily influenced by the Te content while the near-IR refractive index dependence on Ge concentration shows a minimum, which could be exploited in applications. A transition from a disordered to a more ordered amorphous network at 60 at% Te, is observed. The thermal stability study shows that the formed crystalline phases are dictated by the concentration of Ge and Te. New amorphous compositions in the Si–Ge–Te system were found and their properties explored, thus enabling an informed and rapid material selection and design for applications.

Abstract Merocyanine dyes belong to the class of neutral polymethine dyes, where one terminal component is typically found in cyanine dyes and the second obtained from an active methylene compound. The different electron acceptor/donator abilities of the two terminal components have a marked impact on the electronic structure of a merocyanine dye and its equilibrium structure and electronic spectra. Their first technical application was spectral sensitization in silver halide photography. Today they have numerous of applications in textile dyeing and as membrane potential sensitive fluorescent dyes.

GeO2/organically modified silane (ormosils) organic-inorganic composite films containing azobenzene were prepared by combining sol-gel technology and spin coating method. Optical waveguide properties including the refractive index and thickness of the composite films were characterized by using a prism coupling instrument. Surface morphology and photochemical properties of the composite films were investigated by atomic force microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Results indicate that the composite films have smooth and neat surface, and excellent optical waveguide performance. Photo-isomerization properties of the composite films were studied by using a UV–Vis spectrophotometer. Optical switching performance of the composite films was also studied under the alternating exposure of 365 nm ultraviolet light and 410 nm visible light. Finally, strip waveguides and microlens arrays were built in the composite films through a UV soft imprint technique. Based on the above results, we believe that the prepared composite films are promising candidates for micro-nano optics and photonic applications, which would allow directly integrating the optical data storage and optical switching devices onto a single chip.
