Abstract The reactions of di-tert-butylantimony chloride with sodium hydroxide or sodium sulfide yield new anhydrides or thioanhydrides of tert-butylstibinous acids, which have structures with bridging oxygen or sulfur atoms. Analogous reactions of tert-butylantimonydichloride produce the first examples of anhydrides or thioanhydrides of tertbutylstibonous acids, which have cyclic structures (t-BuSbE)n E = O, n = 3, 4; E = S, n = 2, 3, 4, 5. Structural evidence is based on IR, 1H NMR and MS data.

The analytical method on sodium sulfide, sodium sulfite, sodium hydroxide and sodium thiosulfate in sodium polysulfide solution was studied in this paper. The questions in concealing sodium sulfite by formaldehyde and precipitating sodium sulfide by zine acetate, a common method reported in some papers before, was discussed. The improvement on concealing Na2SO3 by SrCl2 instead of formaldehyde and precipitating Na2S by Zn(OH)2 instead of Zn(Ac)2 and testing concentration of NaOH in the mixture, was studied. The results showed that new method is simpler, more rapid, more completely and accurate, the overwhelming reason being that it had no effect on stability of sodium polysulfide.

In the presence of alkaline catalyst sodium hydroxide, the intermediate of hyperbranched polyester (H20Cl) was prepared by the modification of hyperbranched polyester Boltorn H20 with epichlorohydrin. Then a new kind of quaternary ammonium functionalized hyperbranched polyester antibacterial agent (H20C16N) was synthesized by the reaction of H20Cl and hexadecyldimethylamine. The structures characterizations of H20C16N were characterized by 1H NMR. The application of H20C16N used as antibacterial agent of silk fabric was studied. The antibacterial ratio was 99.06% against escherichia coli and 98.24% against staphylococcus aureus. The excellent antibacterial properties of treated silk fabric were provided.

Anomeric methyl 4,6-dideoxy-L-ribo-hexopyranosides I and V, prepared from aldose IX, were etherified with methyl iodide in acetonitrile in the presence of sodium hydroxide. From the products of partial methylation methyl 4,6-dideoxy-2-O-methyl-α-L-ribo-hexopyranoside (II) and methyl 4,6-dideoxy-2,3-di-O-methyl-α-L-ribo-hexopyranoside (IV), or methyl 4,6-dideoxy-2-O-methyl-β-D-ribo-hexopyranoside (VI) and methyl 4,6-dideoxy-2,3-O-methyl-β-L-ribo-hexopyranoside (VIII), respectively, were isolated. The substances were identified by 1H NMR, mass and IR spectra and comparison with standards. The course of etherification of glycosides I and V was checked by gas chromatography and the reactivity of the hydroxyl groups was evaluated by determining the rate constants or their ratios. The observed values were compared with analogous data for other isomers of methyl 4,6-dideoxyhexopyranosides and discussed from the view-point of sterical and polar influence on the reactivity of both their hydroxylic groups.

This study involved a comparison of the antimicrobial efficacy of several beef hide decontamination interventions to identify those that more effectively reduced levels of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella. Whole beef hides were inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella and decontaminated with sprays of solutions of acetic acid (AA; 10%, 55°C), lactic acid (LA; 10%, 55°C), sodium hydroxide (SH; 3%, 23°C), sodium metasilicate (SM; 4%, 23°C), or sodium hydroxide (1.5%), followed by high-pressure washing with chlorinated (0.02%) water (SHC; both applied at 23°C) or water (W; 23°C) or by deluging with solutions of potassium cyanate (PC; 2.4%, 30°C) or sodium sulfide (SS; 6.2%, 30°C). All spraying treatments (AA, LA, SH, SM, and SHC) resulted in removal of visual organic material, whereas the dehairing treatments (PC and SS) successfully removed hair along with visual organic material. The PC, SS, and SHC treatments resulted in the greatest reductions of E. coli O157:H7 (P < 0.05), by 5.1, 4.8, and 5.0 log CFU/cm2, respectively. The SS and SHC treatments decreased Salmonella by 4.2 and 4.4 log CFU/cm2, respectively, compared with the water treatment, which reduced levels by 1.7 log CFU/cm2 (P < 0.05). The SH, AA, and LA treatments also lowered both E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella by at least 2.0 log CFU/cm2. The treatments that were effective in this study deserve further consideration for commercial implementation as hide decontamination interventions.

Silver recovery research from x-ray film waste by leaching and precipitation method using NaOH and Na2S aims to determine the optimum conditions in silver recovery. The parameters optimated in this study were the concentration of the precipitants, leaching temperature and the effect of the type of precipitants on the precipitated time. The results showed that the NaOH and Na2S precipitants were able to recover silver optimally at a concentration of 1.5 M. The optimum leaching temperature of the film with the Na2S precipitant to recover silver was at 25oC, whereas in the NaOH precipitant the film leaching temperature only affected the time of precipitation. Therefore, the formation of precipitate using Na2S is more efficient than NaOH, but the acquisition of silver is better to use NaOH than Na2S.
