Abstract5,5’-Dimethoxy-3,3’-methanediyl-bis-indole (3) was synthesized in a reductive cyclisation process from (E)-5-methoxy-2-nitro-β -morpholinestyrene. The solid state structure was probed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and 13C CP/MAS NMR methods. The results of the X-ray analysis indicate insignificantly different structure of both methoxyindole fragments of the molecule, and this is the main reason for the appearance of the double resonances in the solid state NMR spectrum. Interesting N-H· · ·π interactions were observed which may have a functional role in biological features of 3. 5,5’- Dimethoxy-3,3’-methanediyl-bis-indole at conc. 1 · 10−4 M reduces the growth of MCF7 (breast), NCI-H460 (lung), and SF-268 (NCS) cells to 21, 0, and 48%, respectively.

A series of dodecyl 1-thio-β-D-glycosides has been synthesized and characterized (DSC, NMR, CP MAS, X-ray diffraction) as possible new marking materials with liquid-crystalline properties. These compounds undergo solid to liquid crystal phase transitions at various temperatures, which depend on the nature of the carbohydrate part of the structure. Their liquid-crystalline phases show extreme shear thinning behaviour.Key words: liquid crystal, powder X-ray diffraction, phase transition, thioglycoside, solid-state NMR, marking material

A new and facile synthetic route to the known neutral cluster ((PhCH2)2SnO)6[((PhCH2)2SnOH)2- (CO3)]2 (2) as well as its reactivity toward trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (HO3SCF3, TfOH) are reported. The solid-state structure of the new solvate 2·6C7H8 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The core of 2 can be described as a pair of coplanar pentanuclear [(PhCH2)2SnO]5 ladders bridged at their ends by two carbonate groups. Successive additions of TfOH to a suspension of 2 in CD3CN were monitored by 119Sn{1H} NMR spectroscopy showing the transformation of the fingerprint of 2 (δ = −244, −246, −306 ppm), via new upfield signals, to a final broad resonance located at δ = −474 ppm. Thereafter, two unprecedented ionic monobenzyltin(IV) oxo clusters, 3 and 4, resulting from a debenzylation reaction and exhibiting unusual hexa- and undecanuclear frameworks, respectively, have been isolated as single crystals.

AbstractThe gallium-containing Heusler phases ScRh2Ga, ScPd2Ga, TmRh2Ga and LuRh2Ga have been synthesized by arc-melting of the elements followed by different annealing sequences to improve phase purity. The samples have been studied by powder X-ray diffraction. The structures of Lu0.97Rh2Ga1.03 (Fm3̅m, a=632.94(5) pm, wR2=0.0590, 46 F2 values, seven variables) and Sc0.88Rh2Ga1.12 (a=618.91(4) pm, wR2=0.0284, 44 F2 values, six variables) have been refined from single crystal X-ray diffractometer data. Both gallides show structural disorder through Lu/Ga and Sc/Ga mixing. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements showed Pauli paramagnetism for ScRh2Ga, ScPd2Ga, and LuRh2Ga and Curie-Weiss paramagnetism for TmRh2Ga. 45Sc and 71Ga solid state MAS NMR spectroscopic investigations of the Sc containing compounds confirmed the site mixing effects typically observed for Heusler phases. The data indicate that the effect of mixed Sc/Ga occupancy is significantly stronger in ScRh2Ga than in ScPd2Ga.
