AbstractInternal friction (IF) of a metallic glass Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 has been measured near the glass transition temperature Tg (= 666 K). The measurement is performed by using DMA (TA Instrument) apparatus at a frequency of 0.01 Hz for a specimen stabilized by annealing. The specimen is kept at a constant temperature T, and the IF value Q-1 is measured as a function of time t. A fluctuation of Q-1 with time is seen, and the magnitude of the fluctuation, F(t), is derived from the Q-1-vs-t data. F(t) is Fourier transformed to the frequency spectrum F(f). Such experiment and analyses are carried out at various temperatures near Tg. A characteristic peak (f ~ 10-3 Hz) is found in the spectrum F(f) in the glass transition region.

The internal friction (IF) behaviors of a series of LaCe-, Zr-, and La-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) were studied by a computer-controlled, conventional inverted torsion pendulum. The results indicate that with an increasing temperature, the IF also increases gradually in the supercooled liquid region, followed by a decrease caused by crystallization. BMGs with a good glass forming ability (GFA) usually possess a high IF peak value for an alloy system with the same constituent elements. Furthermore, the magnitude of the IF value (Qi−1) of the inflection point is an efficient criterion of GFA. The Qi−1 value is a valid criterion under the conditions of identical constituent elements and different element contents. However, Qi−1 and GFA have no relationship among different alloy systems.

AbstractThis paper summarises our recent cyclic nanoindentation experiment studies on a range of materials including single crystal and nanocrystalline copper, single crystal aluminium and bulk metallic glasses with different glass transition temperatures. The unloading and reloading processes of the nanoindentation curves have been analysed. The reverse plasticity will be discussed in the context of plastic deformation mechanisms involved. The effect of loading rates on the mechanical properties of materials upon cyclic loading will also be discussed.
