Collective Identity and the Postcharismatic Fate of Shambhala International

This study examines the postcharismatic fate of Vajradhatu/Shambhala International, one of the largest Buddhist communities in North America. Throughout its thirty-year history, the Shambhala movement has experienced a number of internal and external challenges. Following the untimely death of its founder, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, in 1987, the movement experienced a crisis in succession that garnered international negative exposure and threatened its stability. This analysis draws on recent theorizing on collective identity to examine the manner in which this movement has survived the crisis and gone about reconstituting itself. It is proposed that recent transformations in Shambhala International are indicative of larger changes in the organization of religion within contemporary pluralist culture. This study provides much-needed ethnographic data on an empirically neglected new religious movement and adds to a growing body of literature tracing the growth of Buddhism in the West.

This study presents a broad geochemical and isotopic synthesis of mid-Cretaceous granites in the southern Yukon as well as a comparative data set for granites sourced from, and hosted by, accreted terranes in the west through to ancient cratonic rocks in the east. We present data from a traverse perpendicular to the strike of the northern Canadian Cordillera allowing comparison with the growing body of such data derived from the host terranes. Trace elements, specifically the “subduction signature,” allow the discrimination of oceanic verses continental crustal sources. Comparison of isotopic ratios of Sr and, particularly, Nd with published data further refine the correlation of granites with their source terranes. Granites are initially divided based upon their host morphogeological belts, however, our study indicates that the source terranes transcend these traditional boundaries. For Intermontane Belt hosted granites three distinct sources can be identified: an isotopically primitive (Sri, 0.7050; ϵNdT, 2.3 to –1.2), subduction-related source probably associated with the mid-Cretaceous continental margin; an isotopically primitive (Sri, 0.7032 to 0.7035; ϵNdT, 4.2 to 1.4), non-subduction-related source identified as the host Cache Creek terrane; and an isotopically slightly more evolved (Sri, 0.7094 to 0.7101; ϵNdT, 4.5 to –7.3), subduction-related source identified as the host Stikine terrane. Immediately east of the Teslin Tectonic Zone (TTZ), pericratonic Omineca granites (Sri, 0.7032 to 0.7076; ϵNdT, 2.0 to –5.4) do not correlate with their host terranes, but instead show marked similarities with granites immediately to the west of the TTZ suggesting that the same, or similar crustal sources extend further east in the subsurface than previously thought. In the eastern pericratonic Omineca Belt, there is a substantial jump to more evolved isotopic values (Sri, 0.7172 to 0.7354; ϵNdT, –16.6 to –21.7) for granites that extend to the most easterly exposed plutons of the cratonic Omineca Belt. These more isotopically evolved granites correlate with isotopic values for the pericratonic Yukon–Tanana and Cassiar terranes, as well as cratonic North America.

Ecovillages are collective projects that attempt to integrate sustainability principles into daily community life, while also striving to be demonstration projects for mainstream society. As spaces of experimentation, they can provide valuable insights into sustainability transformations. Through shared values and interpersonal connections, ecovillages possess collective identities, which provide a platform for enacting their ideals. However, many ecovillage residents question how to best enhance their role as models, resource centers, and pieces of a greater movement toward sustainability transformations, while simultaneously preserving their unique community and identity. In relation to the above, this paper addresses the questions: What can collective identity in ecovillage communities teach us about the objective and subjective dimensions of sustainability transformations? Furthermore, how can the perspective of collective identity highlight challenges for ecovillages for initiating sustainability transformations? Sustainability transformations encompass objective (behaviors) and subjective (values) dimensions; however, the interactions between these spheres deserve more scholarly attention. Using ethnographic data and in-depth interviews from three ecovillages in the United States, this paper reveals the value in collective identity for underscoring belonging and interpersonal relationships in sustainability transformations. Furthermore, the collective identity perspective exposes paradoxes and frictions between ecovillages and the societal structures and systems they are embedded within.

AbstractFor more than fifty years it has been known that mammalian faunas of late-Pleistocene age are taxonomically unique and lack modern analogs. It has long been thought that nonanalog mammalian faunas are limited in North America to areas east of the Rocky Mountains and that late-Pleistocene mammalian faunas in the west were modern in taxonomic composition. A late-Pleistocene fauna from Marmes Rockshelter in southeastern Washington State has no modern analog and defines an area of maximum sympatry that indicates significantly cooler summers than are found in the area today. An earliest Holocene fauna from Marmes Rockshelter defines an area of maximum sympatry, including the site area, but contains a single tentatively identified taxon that may indicate slightly cooler than modern summers.

Sinemurian phosphorites in southeastern British Columbia and southwestern Alberta conform with the "West Coast type" phosphorite depositional model. The model indicates that they were deposited on or near the Early Jurassic western cratonic margin, next to a sea or trough from which cold water upwelled. This suggests that the allochthonous terrane Quesnellia lay well offshore in Sinemurian time. The sea separating Quesnellia from North America was partly floored by oceanic crust ("Eastern Terrane") and partly by a thick sequence of rifted, continental terrace wedge rocks comprising the Purcell Supergroup and overlying Paleozoic sequence. This sequence must have been depressed sufficiently that access of upwelling deep currents to the phosphorite depositional area was not impeded.

On Monday, October 16, 1758., Hugh Gaine reported a novelty. “Friday last,” he told his readers in the New-York Mercury, “arrived here from the West Indies, a Company of Comedians; some Part of which were here in the Year 1753.” This brief notice, which went on to assure its readers that the company had “an ample Certificate of their Private as well as publick Qualifications,” marks the beginning of the most significant event in American theatre history: the establishment of the professional theatre on this continent. The achievements of the Company of Comedians during its sixteen-year residence in North America are virtually without parallel in the history of the theatre, and have not received sufficient recognition by historians and scholars.
