Abstract When a thin-walled rubber tube containing an incompressible fluid is compressed between two parallel plates the internal pressure rise depends on the restraints in the contact regions. When there is no friction in the contact zone the pressure rise is lower than when slip is prevented, so that the tube, regarded as a spring, has a compression stiffness which depends on the frictional conditions. The same considerations apply to the inflation of a tube between fixed parallel plates. In this case unstable inflation sets in at a critical pressure when the interfaces are frictionless; the tube develops a pronounced bulge when this pressure is approached. Simple theoretical relations are derived for the internal pressure and compressive force for both these deformations, and for both boundary conditions, assuming that the rubber is neo-Hookean in elastic behavior. Experimental measurements on tubes of different dimensions are shown to be in reasonably good quantitative agreement with these theoretical predictions in all cases.

In recent years, the usage of cryogenic fluids as coolant are gaining more attention due to their capability to fulfill the requirements of today’s advancing low temperature industrial applications. As a result, the use of a cryogenic pressure vessel and piping in LNG-tank, LN2, O2 tank for food processing applications and medical applications are becoming more important. In a cryogenic pressure vessel and piping, the reduction of thermal insulation by a small initial damage leads to an internal pressure rise and occurrence of flashing, which leads to a secondary crush of the vessel. In this study, a shock wave was applied to a pressure vessel and piping filled with cryogenic fluid and various observations were made. The internal pressure time history was measured and the safety of the cryogenic pressure vessel and piping was considered.

On June 5, 2009, there was an oil leakage failure accident from an above ground oil storage tank in a large oil depot. The pump of the tank was broken, therefore, the oil contained in the pipeline leaked. The leaked oil amounted to 35,000L. The authors have investigated the tank, the pump and the pipeline to find the cause of the accident and to suggest a preventive measure against same kind of accidents. Some important issues of the investigation are fractography examination of a part on which failure occurred, strength of the pump and a type of load and its magnitude which produced during the operation. As a result, the authors have found that the accident was caused because of an excessive internal pressure rise in the pipeline because the pressure relief valve had been removed from the tank due to an improper piping work. Also the authors have estimated that the internal pressure could reach up to 5.48MPa, and then the pressure caused the brittle fracture of the pump casing.

An active part of a hermetically sealed oil transformer is a heat source increasing the temperature and the volume of insulation oil. The oil volume increase results in significant pressure variations to a tank of the transformer, and also can cause serious damage of the tank. For this reason, a corrugated type radiator is generally adopted to the transformer since it can provide prevention from the internal pressure rise by expansion of corrugated radiator fins. In this paper, design of a corrugated type radiator for the hermetically sealed oil transformer is suggested, and structural integrity of the radiator is evaluated by both numerical and experimental methods. The design of the corrugated type radiator has been proposed and variation of oil pressure inside the radiator is estimated for operating load case. The structural integrity of the proposed radiator is performed, and measured strain values are compared with the analyses results. In addition, a fatigue analysis of the radiator is conducted. From the results, it is concluded that the design of the radiator meets the requirements for structural integrity in the operating condition.
