Toxic effects of extractants and carriers of specific microorganisms must be taken into account before using them with hybrid fermentation processes that are combined with liquid membranes or liquid-liquid extraction. In the current research three extractants (trioctylamine, tri-iso-octylamine and Aliquat 336), three diluents (dodecane, dodecanol, and oleyl alcohol) and two mixtures (extractant/diluent) were tested for molecular toxicity on the bacteria Lactobacillus casei ATCC 393 as potential components of a liquid membrane or a liquid-liquid extraction process for lactic acid removal in an intensified fermentation process. Glucose consumption, lactic acid production, and cell growth were used as toxicity indicators. Physical properties of extractants and diluents were related to the molecular toxicity on the microorganism. These results show that mixtures of tri-iso-octylamine/dodecane and trioctylamine/dodecane at a proportion of 1:9 v/v have great potential to be used in liquid membranes or liquid-liquid extraction processes on hybrid fermentations with Lactobacillus casei ATCC 393.

The in vitro glucose consumption and lactic acid production by erythrocytes from 20 cattle of a Beef Synthetic (SY) breed group and 25 cattle of a double-muscled (DM) breed group were determined. There were three age groups and two sexes within each breed group. Animals within the DM breed group were categorized as either phenotypically normal- to moderate-muscled (DM carriers) or extreme-muscled (extreme DM) based on the phenotypic expression of the double-muscling trait and on their breeding history. Both DM phenotypes had higher (P < 0.01) erythrocyte glucose consumption and lactic acid production than normal-muscled, noncarrier cattle of the SY breed group. Extreme DM cattle were not different (P > 0.05) in either their erythrocyte glucose consumption or lactic acid production compared with DM carriers. No difference (P > 0.05) due to breed or phenotype was observed in the molar ratio of lactic acid produced to glucose consumed by erythrocytes. These results suggest that carriers of the Double Muscled Syndrome, regardless of phenotypic expression of the double-muscling trait, have a higher rate of erythrocyte glycolysis than normal cattle. Key words: Cattle, double muscled, erythrocyte, glucose, lactic acid

A study has been carried out on Ta and Nb recovery by a liquid-liquid extraction process using 4-methylacetophenone (4-MAcPh) as the organic phase. The 4-MAcPh was compared to methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) with respect to extraction efficiencies (D values) at different concentrations of H2SO4 in the aqueous phase. The results showed a similar extraction of Nb for both solvents. However, for Ta, extraction efficiency is increased by a factor of 1.3 for 4-MAcPh. In addition, the MIBK solubilized completely after 6 mol∙L−1 of H2SO4 against only a loss of 0.14–4% for 4-MAcPh between 6 and 9 mol∙L−1 of H2SO4. The potential of 4-MAcPh has also been studied to selectively recover Ta from a model capacitor waste solution. The results showed a selectivity for Ta in the presence of impurities such as Ag, Fe, Ni and Mn. The 4-MAcPh also presents the advantage of having physicochemical properties adapted to its use in liquid-liquid extraction technologies such as mixer-settlers.

Abstract Pesticide pollution is a serious problem being faced. Harmful levels of pesticides are found in the water which is used for daily purposes. In the event of such a scenario, this paper presents a working solution for bringing down the Pesticide levels in the water to safe levels by using the method of liquid-liquid extraction. The experimental liquid-liquid equilibrium data on pesticide-water-solvent ternary mixtures at a temperature of 288.15 K are presented here. The pesticide used here is a chlorinated hydrocarbon called lindane found in the water (underground, land), beverages and foods. The solvents used are Petro-ether-Chloroform (1:1), Ethylene di chloride and n-hexane. The equilibrium generation diagram, triangular diagram, tie lines and bimodal curves as well as the distribution coefficient have been determined and reported. The petro-ether-chloroform was found to be the right solvent for the separation of lindane from wastewater because of high selectivity (25.36) and distribution coefficient (4). The extraction process is simulated into ‘C’ language

The distribution equilibrium of gallium(III) between n-octylaniline dissolved in toluene and acidic aqueous succinate media has been investigated as a function of the concentration of extractant in the organic phase and concentration of hydrogen ions and gallium( III) ions in the aqueous phase. The stoichiometry of the extracted species was determined on the basis of slope analysis.Gallium(III) is extracted by the anion exchange mechanism as [RNH3+Ga(succinate)2]org. The temperature dependence of the extraction equilibria was examined by the temperature variation method. The extraction process is favoured with increasing temperature. It was found that a large number of cations and anions have a high tolerance limit. The selectivity of the extraction is increased by the use of suitable masking agents. The method affords the binary separation of gallium(III) from associated elements and was further extended to the analysis of a synthetic mixture.

Liquid-liquid extraction of pigments present in mate (flex Paraguariensis) was studied using various organic solvents and different concentrations. The best results were obtained using diethyl ether and sodium lauryl sulfate. The effect of the addition of ethanol on the extraction process was also analyzed.

1. The glucose consumption of osteoblasts growing in a medium of plasma and embryo juice has been compared with that of the same cells in plasma and Tyrode medium. Embryo juice causes an initial increased glucose consumption which later falls below the level characteristic of a Tyrode-plasma medium. 2. A modification of a method of measuring the nucleoprotein phosphorus content of tissue cultures is described and among other data obtained the changes which occur in this figure have been noted for fourth passage chick osteoblast cultures and for fresh heart explants during the first 4 days of culture in media of plasma and Tyrode and of plasma and embryo juice. 3. The figures for nucleoprotein content have been correlated with those for glucose consumption and lactic acid production and pronounced differences have been observed in the behaviour of the two types of tissue. The possible significance of the findings is discussed. 4. There is no absolute correlation between high growth rate and high sugar consumption or lactic acid production. 5. The data discussed are consistent with the idea that an increased protein metabolism, and a decreased carbohydrate metabolism result from the addition of embryo juice to osteoblast cultures. Embryo juice has no detectable effects on the carbohydrate metabolism of fresh heart cultures.
