Path analysis of genotype × environment interaction in wheat-barley disomic addition lines

In order to locate QTLs controlling the phenotypic stability and drought tolerance of yield and yield components in barley, seven disomic addition lines were sown together with their parents (donor and recipient) in a randomized complete block design with three replications under four rainfed and irrigated conditions. The descriptive diagram of yield and yield components exhibited a genotype (G) × environment (E) interaction and moderate variability over different environments, indicating the possibility of selection for stable and drought-tolerant entries. The AMMI stability value (ASV) and yield stability index (YSI) discriminated addition lines 2H and 4H as the most stable and droughttolerant.Path analysis revealed that the relative contribution of the number of seeds per plant (NSPP) (0.71) to grain yield (GY) was higher than that of the number of seeds per spike (SPS) (−0.44) and of thousand-seed weight (TSW) (−0.14). Therefore, the contribution of NSPP to the stability of GY over different environments was higher than that of other yield components. In other words, the instability of GY was caused by TSW and SPS in different environments. Path analysis on the drought susceptibility index revealed that most of the QTLs controlling drought tolerance and drought susceptibility in barley are located on chromosomes 3H and 6H, respectively.

ABSTRACT<br /><br />Genotype x environment interaction always presents in soybean multilocation trials in Indonesia. The objective of the research was to determine the performance of yield and yield components of soybean promising lines in two locations. A total of 11 promising lines, and three check varieties (Tanggamus, Wilis, and Anjasmoro) were evaluated in NTB and DIY in dry season 2013. The design was randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that yield and yield components were influenced by locations, genotypes and genotypes x locations interaction, except for days to maturity which was not influenced by the location. Number of filled pods had a significant positive correlation with grain yield of soybean. TGM/Anj-773 line had high average yield at two locations and higher than the check variety (Tanggamus).<br /><br />Keywords: correlation, genotype x environment, Glycine max

For evaluation of the effects of super absorbent polymer under different irrigation regimes on the yield and yield components of Brassica napus L., a factorial experiment was carried out, based on randomized complete block design with four replicas. Treatments included super absorbent polymer (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 g/kg soil) and induced drought stress (irrigation at 25, 50 and 75 mm evaporation from class A pan). The experiment was conducted in pots with 5 kg of soil. Data analysis of variance showed the significant interaction effect between polymer and irrigation on the stem length, width and weight, the number of seeds per sheath, number of seeds per plant, the number of sterile and fertile sheath per plant, fertile sheath percentage (fertile sheath/ total sheath ×100), 1000 seeds weight, seed weight per plant, sheath weight per plant and the number of total sheath. The present study revealed that indifferent from the applied amounts of the super absorbent polymer, in all cases the measured characters have been more affected by induced drought stress.

Exposure of soybean to dicamba can result in leaf malformation and sometimes yield loss, but it is unclear how yield components are affected by exposure to low quantities of this herbicide. The objectives were to characterize soybean injury and quantify changes in seed yield and yield components of soybean plants exposed to dicamba, and determine if seed yield loss can be estimated from visual injury ratings. Nine dicamba rates (0, 0.06, 0.23, 0.57, 1.1, 2.3, 4.5, 9.1, and 22.7 g ae ha−1) were applied at three growth stages (V2 – two trifoliates, V5-five trifoliates, or R2-full flowering soybean) to Beck's brand ‘342NRR’ soybean planted near Lafayette, IN, in 2009 and 2010 and near Fowler, IN, in 2009. Visually estimated soybean injury of 20% at the V2, V5, or R2 timing was 0.676 to 0.937 g ha−1dicamba at 14 d after treatment (DAT) and 0.359 to 1.37 g ha−1dicamba at 28 DAT. Seed yield was reduced by 5% from 0.042 to 0.528 g ha−1dicamba and a 10% reduction was caused by 0.169 to 1.1 g ha−1dicamba. The number of seeds m−2, pods m−2, reproductive nodes m−2, and nodes m−2were the most sensitive yield components. Path analysis indicated that dicamba reduced seeds m−2, pods m−2, reproductive nodes m−2, and nodes m−2which were the main causes of seed yield loss from dicamba exposure. The correlation of seed yield loss and visual soybean injury was significant (P < 0.0001) for both the V2 treatment timing (R2= 0.92) and the V5 and R2 treatment timings (R2= 0.91). Early-season injury rating of 8% at the V2 treatment and 2% at the V5 or R2 treatments caused 10% or more yield loss.

ABSTRACT Knowledge about associations between traits is fundamental for plant breeding, since indirect selection can accelerate the development of promising genotypes. This study assessed the magnitude of associations between agronomically important traits in fisális (Physalis peruviana L). The experiment was conducted in Lages, Santa Catarina, and the treatments consisted of six fisális populations. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, with two replications and seven plants per plot. The correlations between traits were estimated based on the Pearson correlation coefficients and partitioned into direct and indirect effects through path analysis. Fruit weight was positively correlated with number of seeds (0.874), equatorial fruit diameter (0.738) and polar fruit diameter (0.672). By path analysis, number of seeds was identified as the trait with the highest direct contribution to fruit weight. The high phenotypic correlations between the equatorial and polar fruit diameters with fruit weight were mainly due to the indirect effect via number of seeds (0.505 and 0.459). The selection for heavier fisális fruits was strongly influenced by number of seeds, i.e., this trait should be taken into account for selection.

Abstract In hot and arid regions, drought stress is considered as one of the main reasons for yield reduction. To study the effect of drought stress, iron and zinc spray on the yield and yield components of wheat, an experiment was carried out during the crop seasons of 2010 and 2011 on Shahid Salemi Farm in Ahwaz as a split factorial within randomized complete block design with three replications. The main plots with irrigation factor and three levels were considered: Level A) full irrigation, Level B) stopping irrigation at pollination step, and Level C) stopping irrigation at the seed filling stage. Subsidiary plots were considered with and without iron and zinc spray. Influencing the seed filling process, in interaction with iron, wich is an important leaf's chlorophyll cation, zinc increased the seed yield. The drought stress reduced the thousand kernels weight (TKW) and the number of seeds per spike increased about 24% and 8.5% more than the one of control treatment, respectively. Using iron, as compared with control treatment, causes the increase of thousand kernels weight from 45.71 to 46.83 grams and the increase of spike from 49.51 to 51.73. Zinc spray increased seed yield and thousand kernels weight. The results obtained from the present research showed that iron and zinc spray has fairly improved the effects caused by drought stress.

An experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to evaluate the effect of urea super granule (USG) as a source of nitrogen on the yield and yield components of transplant Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan46 and BINA dhan7. Five levels of N (viz., 0, 60, 120 kg ha-1 as prilled urea and 60 and 120 kg ha-1 as USG) were taken as experimental treatments. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Plant height, effective tillers hill-1, grains panicle-1 and grain yield varied significantly due to different cultivars. All the yield and yield components except 1000-grain weight were influenced significantly by the levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The highest grain yield (4.82 t ha-1) was recorded in BINA dhan7 and the lowest one (4.30 t ha-1) was recorded in BRRI dhan39. Nitrogen @ 120 kg ha-1 as USG performed the best among the treatments in respect of yield and yield components of rice. The highest grain yield (5.46t ha-1) was obtained from BINA dhan7 with 120 kg N ha-1 as USG which was statistically identical with 60 kg N ha-1 as USG. A considerable amount (31.25%) of prilled urea (PU) nitrogen could be saved by using USG. Studies were conducted to determine tuber yield stability and adaptability of some elite yam (Dioscorea sp.) genotypes in northern Ghana. Ten elite exotic yam genotypes alongside one locally cultivated farmer-preferred variety, Laribako, were grown in five environments between 2010 and 2012. These 11 genotypes were arranged in a randomised complete block design with three replications and assessed for tuber yield and yield components. Analysis of variance indicated significant p < 0.05 genotypic variation for tuber yield and the yield components studied. Genotype × environment interaction effect was significant p < 0.05 for tuber yield and mean tuber weight but not significant p > 0.05 for number of tubers per mound. Apart from genotype 95/18922, all the exotic genotypes had significantly p < 0.05 higher tuber yields than the local check, Laribako. The highest tuber yield (16.03 t ha−1) across environments was obtained from 96/19158 followed by 95/00594 (14.9 t ha−1). According to the additive main effect multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis, genotype (G), environment (E), and GxE interaction, respectively, explained 39.71%, 36.03%, and 24.26% of the total sum of squares for tuber yield. For number of tubers per plant, GxE effect explained the greatest percentage (60.46%) of the total sum of squares compared to genotype effect (22.00%) and environment effect (17.54%). The local variety, Laribako, was more stable across all environments though low yielding compared to the exotic genotypes. Three genotypes, 95/19158, 95/19177, and 96/02025, were more stable across environments than the other exotic genotypes. Genotype 95/18544 was the most sensitive and for that matter responded positively in the favorable environments. The study identified genotypes with specific and general adaptation potential across different environments for tuber yield that can be further tested in on-farm trials for possible release.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate effect of urea fertilizer on yield and yield components of Zea mays L. Using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) split plots in three replications in agricultural research farm of Balkh University by 2019. Doses of urea used in this experiment were 0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha-1 , respectively. It has been found that amount of nitrogen fertilizer (urea) had significant effect on yield of maize at p<0.05. The higher level of nitrogen caused the higher grain yield, number of kernels per ear, the number of grains per ear row, ear diameter, cob length, grain per plant and plant height. As a result 7.76 ton ha-1 was recorded as high yield while 240 kg ha-1 urea was used, and 5.12 ton ha-1 was recorded as low yield in treatment one with 0 kg ha-1 of nitrogen fertilizer. Finally, as a result using 240 kg ha-1 nitrogen fertilizer is recommended.
