Classification and re-evaluation of double-skin facades

Abstract The construction of double-skin glass facades in Hungary has mainly design or acoustic motivations. The potential energy savings or risks of double-skin facades are, however, not commonly evident. This fact is not surprising if we notice that there is no widely excepted classification of these constructions. In the following article different facade typologies are compared (Pottgiesser, BBRI, Széll) and an attempt to develop a transparent classification system is made. Subsequently a few chosen facade types, which are expected to perform well in the Hungarian climate, are evaluated through computer simulation programs to serve as a guideline for the design on climates similar to the domestic one.

Double skin facade is one of the possible approaches to bioclimatic design. Bright architectural expression is combined with lots of potential natural heating and ventilation of the internal space of buildings. Double skin facade considered as an element of building heating, ventilation, or, finally, as an element of conditioning in the building. Building envelope on high-rise office buildings have an important role of energy consumed. There are many methods and techniques that can be used to achieve this goal through energy efficiency for building envelope in the tropic area. The use of glass material becomes one of the alternatives that offer a more attractive appearance. Although the double skin facades (DSF) has been widely applied, but research on the thermal performance and behavior of the wind is still scarce for the tropics, so it is interesting to note related to energy conservation. To obtain a clear picture of the heat transfer and airflow, the research was conducted on the two office buildings with the same orientation and location but they were different on the building envelope. The study was conducted by the field measurements and simulation using CFD-ACE + software, to determine the performance of the heat transfer and behavior of airflow in the double skin facades. The results indicate that the role of wind on the design building envelope has an influence on the heat transfer and energy savings. Key words: wind, double skin facade, heat transfer, CFD, energy

In the past 30 years, tubular daylight guide systems (TDGSs) have become one of the most popular ways to transport outdoor natural light into the inner space in building design. However, tubular daylight guide systems are not widely used because of the lack of methods to evaluate methods on the suitability of the TDGSs. This study therefore summarizes the daylight performance metrics of TDGSs and presents the estimation methods in terms of field measurements, simulation and empirical formulae. This study focuses on the daylight performance and potential energy savings of TDGSs. Moreover, this study will be helpful for building designers to build healthy, comfortable and energy-saving indoor environment.

Previous studies of ultraviolet spectral classification have been insufficient to establish a comprehensive classification system for ultraviolet spectra of early-type stars because of inadequate spectral resolution. We have initiated a new study of ultraviolet spectral classification of B stars using high-dispersion IUE archival data. High-dispersion SWP spectra of MK standards and other B stars are retrieved from the IUE archives and numerically degraded to a uniform resolution of 0.25 or 0.50 Å. The spectra (in the form of plots or photowrites) are then visually examined with the aim of setting up a two-dimensional classification matrix. We follow the method used to create the MK classification system for visual spectra. The purpose of this work is to examine the applicability of the MK system (and in particular, the set of standard stars) in the ultraviolet, and to establish classification criteria in this spectral region.

The article describes a method for placing information into a classification system that maximizes the flexibility in retrieval at a later time. It uses (1) a stack of edge-punched cards containing information of interest that has been punched according to (2) a coding system developed by the users. The authors have developed a classification system for the small-group field which is depicted and described in detail. It allows for coding a study on about 50 dimensions to (1) locate an article, (2) give an over-all description of the article, and (3) indicate the variables measured or discussed. Examples of uses and discussion of special features are provided to give the reader sufficient information to establish and use the system or a similar system for his own purposes.
