A list of the distribution records for 18 species of freshwater shrimps of the families Euryrhynchidae (3 spp.), Palaemonidae (13 spp.) and Sergestidae (2 spp.) from the states of Amapá and Pará are presented. All records are documented by voucher specimens deposited in the three main carcinological collections from northern Brazil: Instituto de Pesquisas Científicas e Tecnológicas do Amapá (Macapá), Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (Manaus), and Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (Belém). Maps of the geographic distribution of these records in the eastern Amazon region are offered, and comments on the zoogeography of the species are made.

We report new records of the White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Brazil based on specimens deposited in scientific collections. These new records expand the known geographic distribution of the species in Brazil southwards in the states of Roraima and Amapá, the latter the first record of the species below the equator line in Brazil, and register it for the first time in the state of Amazonas. These records contribute to increase the knowledge of the geographical distribution of O. virginianus in Brazil and highlights the importance of museum collections as a source of biogeographic and ecological data.

We present an updated checklist of the amphibians and reptiles for the state of Guerrero, Mexico. This list is based on bibliographic records, the revision of scientific collections and the authors’ field notes. The herpetofauna of the state includes 259 species (78 amphibians, 181 reptiles), of which three are introduced. The conservation status of all native species was assessed using three independent systems (NOM-059, IUCN and EVS). Finally, the geographic distribution of amphibians and reptiles is discussed in the context of both the biogeographic provinces within the state and the influence of road location on specimen collection patterns.

A new species of Bulbostylis (Cyperaceae), only known from the Brazilian Amazonian coast, is here described and illustrated. Bulbostylis litoreamazonicola was found growing over dunes, in seasonally flooded restinga vegetation, and in humid fields near the mangroves from the State of Pará, Northern Brazil. This is the fifth Brazilian-native species of Bulbostylis lacking a persistent stylopodium on the mature fruit. The new species is mainly characterized by its annual habit, simple anthelate inflorescences, densely hispid to hispidulous longitudinally ribbed scapes, pubescent glumes, and cordiform nutlets.

Of the 69 Neotropical species of Stylogaster, only one record was previously known from Northeastern Brazil (from Bahia state in 1985—S. brasilia Camras & Parrillo). Several specimens from this region housed at the MNRJ collection were studied, mostly from Bahia, Ceará and Pernambuco states. Two new records were obtained: S. macrura Lopes, 1938, previously known from São Paulo state (Southeastern Brazil), and S. souzai Monteiro, 1960, from Amapá and Pará (Northern Brazil). Descriptions of two new species, S. hugoi sp. nov. and  S. planitarsis sp. nov. are presented, as well as that of the previously unknown female of S. souzai. Illustrations and geographic distribution of the species are also provided.

A cytotaxonomic treatment is given for 12 native species, 2 introduced species, and 3 natural interspecific hybrids of the genus Elymus L. that occur in Canada. Five of the native Elymus species and an additional natural interspecific hybrid are found in Alaska. Eleven of the native species, one introduced species, and two of the natural interspecific hybrids are present in the mainland United States. Some additional native species and natural interspecific hybrids of Elymus from the mainland United States are treated briefly.Nomenclatural proposals include: Elymusglaucus Buckl. var. virescens (Piper) Bowden; E. ×uclueletensis Bowden (E. mollis Trin. f. mollis × E. glaucus Buckl. var. glaucus); E. × aleuticus Hultén (pro sp.) (E. mollis Trin. f. mollis × E. hirsutus Presl); E. canadensis L. var. wiegandii (Fern.) Bowden f. wiegandii and f. calvescens (Fern.) Abstract Senna comprises about 350 species worldwide, of which 80 species occur in Brazil. This work brings an update taxonomic treatment of Senna species in the state of Minas Gerais, the second most diverse state for the genus, through the morphological analysis of about 2,348 specimens from herbaria and fieldwork. Thirty-six species and 29 varieties were recognized, including 34 native species and 2 cultivated species. Of the 39 species reported in literature for the state, but 4 species were excluded from the list produced. The occurrence of Senna acuruensis was confirmed; S. macranthera var. striata and S. pilifera var. tubata are new records, and S. hirsuta var. acuminata is endemic to Minas Gerais. There are 28 species in the Cerrado, 26 species in the Atlantic Forest and 20 species in the Caatinga. The distribution of Senna pentagonia var. pentagonia is extended to include the Atlantic Forest. Identification keys, descriptions, illustrations, taxonomic comments and geographic distribution are provided for the species and varities.

Abstract Cambarus (Puncticambarus) aldermanorum, originally considered endemic to South Carolina, is now known from the upper Catawba River basin in Burke and Caldwell counties, North Carolina. Orconectes (Crockerinus) erichsonianus and Orconectes (Procericambarus) forceps, both previously known from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia, are apparently now expanding their ranges from Tennessee into the French Broad River basin in Madison County, North Carolina. Cambarus (Cambarus) eeseeohensis, an endemic species once considered limited in distribution to the Linville River in Avery County, is reported from the Watauga River basin in Watauga County and the Johns River subdrainage of the Catawba River basin in Avery County. Voucher specimens for new localities for an undescribed endemic species, Orconectes (Procericambarus) sp. (the “Cheoah” crayfish), and two invasive species, Orconectes (Gremicambarus) virilis and Orconectes (Procericambarus) rusticus, are provided. A single specimen of a non-native species, Procambarus (Pennides) spiculifer, is reported from a tributary of the Watauga River in Watauga County. Some life history and taxonomic notes for several of the species are included.

Abstract Parasites are an important part of biodiversity, and knowledge of species and their relationship with their hosts helps in monitoring an ecosystem over time. The aim of this study was to investigate the fauna of metazoan parasites in Hemiodus unimaculatus from the Jari River, in the eastern Amazon region, northern Brazil. Of the fish examined, 96.7% were parasitized by one or more species, and a total of 336 parasites such as Dactylogyridae gen. sp.1, Dactylogyridae gen. sp.2, Dactylogyridae gen. sp.3, Dactylogyridae gen. sp.4, Gyrodactilydae gen. sp., Urocleidoides sp.1, Urocleidoides sp.2, Urocleidoides sp.3, metacercariae of Digenea gen. sp., Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus, Contracaecum sp., Neoechinorhynchus sp. and Acarina gen. sp. The parasite community showed low Brillouin diversity (0.58 ± 0.29), low evenness (0.44 ± 0.21) and low species richness (7.40 ± 3.83). There was a predominance of ectoparasites, mainly monogeneans and digeneans. The parasites showed an aggregate dispersion, except for P. (S.) inopinatus, which had a random dispersion. The size of the hosts had no effect on diversity, species richness and abundance of parasites, but other factors structured the parasite community. This is the first study on the parasite community and infracommunities in H. unimaculatus.

We have revised all the specimens of Araneidae from the Colombian Amazon Region in the Arachnological Collection of the Instituto de Ciencias Naturales at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (ICN), in addition to the specimens collected between 2000 and 2004 by the authors in the lower Caquetá and Apaporis rivers (Amazonas and Vaupés, Colombia). A total of 77 new records for Araneidae in the Colombian Amazon are reported; 26 of these species are new records for the country and the region in addition to 15 more species known for Colombia but newly recorded in the region, the distribution of the remaining 36 species is expanded within the region. The genera Encyosaccus Simon 1865 (E. sexmaculatus Simon 1895), Hingstepeira Levi 1995 (H. folisecens Hingston 1932) and Micrepeira Schenkel 1953 (M. fowleri Levi 1995 and M. tubulofasciens Hingston 1932) are recorded for the first time in Colombia. From this revision, it is evident the great amount of new information available in museum collections. Due to the strategic geographic position of Colombia, species inventories in different localities of the Colombian Amazon Region are important to fill distributional gaps of many species in South America. This work contributes to the knowledge of geographic distribution patterns of orb-weaving species in Colombia and in the entire Amazon Region.
