We report new records of four macroalgae species in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, specifically from the rocky reefs of northern Chocó, Colombian Pacific. Among them, three species of Rhodophyta are included—Crouania mageshimensis Itono, 1977; Monosporus indicus Børgesen, 1931; Jania articulata N’Yeurt & Payri, 2009—and one species of Chlorophyta—Ulothrix subflaccida Wille, 1901. The new records increase the knowledge of tropical marine algae in the Pacific, open the discussion about possible dispersal mechanisms, and recall the importance of conducting molecular studies to define phylogenetic and biogeographic aspects of macroalgae.

Three species of the genus Rheumatobates, R. peculiaris, R. longisetosus, and R. probolicornis are recorded from the Pacific coast of Colombia, municipality of Tumaco (department of Nariño); and R. bergrothi is recorded from the Pacific coast of Costa Rica; the macropterous morph of R. longisetosus is described, ecological data are provided and it is included together with other four species in a key to adult males from Eastern Tropical Pacific; the male habitus for six species is illustrated.

Echinoderms within the Eastern Tropical Pacific have mainly been studied in association with coral reefs. Investigations on echinoderms associated with soft-bottoms and estuaries are still scarce. The present study reports on the echinoderm species inhabiting the soft-bottom sediments of shallow-brackish waters adjacent to the largest river basin along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Térraba-Sierpe wetland. Nine species were recorded, three of them new records for Costa Rica: Luidia columbia, L. latiradiata, and L. superba. The most common species were L. columbia, Astropecten armatus, A. regalis, and L. latiradiata. This contributes towards current knowledge on the biodiversity of Térraba-Sierpe wetland and should be considered as a baseline upon which to monitor the effects of future impacts on this important mangrove area.

<p>The molluscan fauna of Isla del Coco has recently been well documented, but the heterobranch sea slugs, traditionally called “opisthobranchs”, remain poorly known. We report 13 new records, increasing the total to 40 species. Of the 13 newly discovered species, the following species had not been previously recorded along the Pacific Costa Rican mainland: <em>Berthella californica </em>(Dall, 1900), <em>Peltodoris rubra</em> (Bergh, 1905), <em>Dendrodoris albobrunnea </em>Allan, 1933, <em>Doriopsilla</em> cf. <em>spaldingi </em>Valdés &amp; Behrens, 1998, <em>Glaucus</em> cf. <em>marginatus</em> (Reinhardt &amp; Bergh, 1864), and <em>Flabellina</em> sp. Additionally, we report <em>Peltodoris rubra</em>, previously known from the Indo-Pacific, for the first time in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.</p><div> </div>

A new species of Mysidium from the eastern tropical Pacific, Mexico, is described, representing the second species of this genus described for the Pacific Ocean and the eighth species reported worldwide. Mysidium pumae sp. nov. is distinguished from the other species of the genus by several characters including: the lanceolate appendix masculina, 3× as long as wide, tapering distally, with a distal tuft of 16 setae and an inner proximal tuft of more than 30 setae, the male pleopod 4 with endopod bearing 3 setae, the exopod with 4 articles, the modified seta from article 3 of the exopod bifid, telson 2.3× as long as wide, distally concave. A table with the main differences among all the known species in the genus is provided.

Fifteen species of echinoderms (5 asteroids, 5 echinoids and 5 ophiuroids) are reported for Natural National Park Ensenada deUtria in the Pacific coast of Chocó, Colombia. For each species, we report its size and ecological observations. Two species, Mithrodia bradleyi and Encope ecuadorensis are new records for the Colombian Pacific coast and are described shortly., Most of the echinoderms found were associated to rocky shores, coral reef and sometimes sandy shores, except Ophiothríx spicuiata and Ophiactis savignyi, which were found living in association with the gorgonia Lophogorgia alba. Hesperocidaris asteriscus and Centrostephanus coronatus live in holes in coral or rock. These are mainly intertidal or shallow subtidal species.

&lt;div&gt;The oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP)&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;have expanded over the past 50 years, likely leading to more frequent and more&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;intense low oxygen extreme events. This has potentially far-reaching implica-&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;tions for e.g., the production of the climate-relevant gas nitrous oxide or the&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;reduction of habitat for fish and zooplankton. Yet, to date our understanding&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;of the distribution and characteristics of low oxygen extreme events in the ETP&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;remains limited.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&amp;#160;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;To fill this gap, we study low oxygen extremes in the ETP using results from&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;an eddy-resolution hindcast simulation with the coupled physical-biogeochemical&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;model ROMS-BEC for the Pacific from 1979 to 2016. Our setup permits us to&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;simulate oxygen variability in the ETP affected by processes on a broad range&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;of scales, from climate modes down to mesoscale dynamics. We detect and&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;track low oxygen extreme events in the upper 500 meters of the ETP, by ap-&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;plying temporally constant statistical thresholds to the hindcast simulation and&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;requiring a minimum event duration of 5 days. While most extremes last less&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;than 10 days and are of small volumetric extent, about 15% of the extremes&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;exist for over a month. The diversity of the long-lasting extremes is dominated&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;by westward propagating low oxygen eddies, which are mostly generated in the&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;near-coastal area. Superimposed inter-annual variability associated with the El&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Ni&amp;#241;o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) leads to a decrease in mesoscale extremes&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;during El Ni&amp;#241;o periods. Along the boundaries of the ETP OMZs transient&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;shoaling events of the oxycline linked to ENSO dynamics or the seasonal cycle&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;contribute to the generation of further pronounced low oxygen extreme events.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&amp;#160;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The presented detection and tracking of low oxygen extremes is an important&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;step towards a better understanding of extreme event occurrences and charac-&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;teristics and lays the groundwork for further research such as the biogeochemical&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;impact of such extremes.&lt;/div&gt;

Abstract The obduction of equatorial 13°C Water in the Pacific is investigated using a simulated passive tracer of the Consortium for Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO). The result shows that the 13°C Water initialized in the region 8°N–8°S, 130°–90°W enters the surface mixed layer in the eastern tropical Pacific, mainly through upwelling near the equator, in the Costa Rica Dome, and along the coast of Peru. Approximately two-thirds of this obduction occurs within 10 years after the 13°C Water being initialized, with the upper portion of the water mass reaching the surface mixed layer in only about a month. The obduction of the 13°C Water helps to maintain a cool sea surface temperature year-round, equivalent to a surface heat flux of about −6.0 W m−2 averaged over the eastern tropical Pacific (15°S–15°N, 130°W–eastern boundary) for the period of integration (1993–2006). During El Niño years, when the thermocline deepens as a consequence of the easterly wind weakening, the obduction of the 13°C Water is suppressed, and the reduced vertical entrainment generates a warming anomaly of up to 10 W m−2 in the eastern tropical Pacific and in particular along the coast of Peru, providing explanations for the warming of sea surface temperature that cannot be accounted for by local winds alone. The situation is reversed during La Niña years.

The results of a phycofloristic survey made during the years 1980 and 1984, 10 Km South of the northern limit of the static of Michoacan are reported. The results can be summarized in the taxonomic determination of 68 species distributed in 43 genera belonging to divisions Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta. New records for the Mexican Pacific phycology are reported, as well as those for the Mexican tropical Pacific exclusively.
