Self-regulation and self-efficacy as mediators of achievement goals and leisure time physical activity: a proposed model

Background and Study Aim : The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating role of self-efficacy and self-regulation between achievement goals and leisure time physical activity among Turkish high school students. Material and Methods : Four hundred and sixty-four high school students (216 male; 248 female) enrolled in physical education classes voluntarily participated in the study. To assess whether the data fit the proposed model structural equation modelling was used. Results: Results revealed that self-efficacy mediated the effects of mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance, and performance-approach goals on leisure time physical activity. Self-regulation was not a mediator of achievement goals and did not predict leisure time physical activity. Conclusions: This study revealed the importance of self-efficacy in physical education to promote students’ leisure time physical activity.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between levels of leisure-time sports and physical activity and the stages of change in high school students with goal orientations. Methods: The sample was conformed of 2168 students randomly selected to participate in a longitudinal study in Costa Rica (423), Mexico (408), and Spain (1337), with 1052 being boys, 1037 girls, and 79 who did not specify sex, aged between 11 and 16 years old (M = 12.49, SD = 0.81). We used a questionnaire to ask students about their leisure-time sports and physical activity, about stages of change and to measure achievement goals. Results: The results show that students are more active in Costa Rica, most of them being in a stage of active change. Conclusions: We found significant differences in achievement goals in all three countries, which shows that students in active stages have higher values than those in the inactive stage.

Purpose: To assess if high school students’ leisure-time physical activity is predicted by their perception of the motivational climate, their perceived competence, and their achievement goals in physical education (PE) and if these variables interact with each other.Methods: A sample of 843 high school students completed self-reported questionnaires in the middle and at the end of the school year. The data were analyzed by structural equation modeling and latent moderated structural equations.Results: Leisure-time physical activity was positively predicted by students’ performance-approach goals and perceived competence in PE and by the interaction between their perceived competence and their adoption of mastery goals.Discussion/Conclusion: Only individual variables in PE were related to leisure-time physical activity. The significant interaction effect between students’ mastery goals and perceived competence in PE suggests that teachers need to foster students’ perceptions of competence. The authors therefore discuss the scope of the results with regard to pedagogical practices.

Using the Theory of Planned Behavior as a framework, the Attitude to Leisure-time Physical Activity, Expectations of Others, Perceived Control, and Intention to Engage in Leisure-time Physical Activity scales were developed for use among high school students. The study population included 20 boys and 68 girls 13 to 17 years of age (for boys, M=15.1 yr., SD=1.0; for girls, M= 15.0 yr., SD= 1.1). Generation of items and the establishment of content validity were performed by professionals in exercise physiology, physical education, and clinical psychology. Each scale item was phrased in a Likert type format. Both unipolar and bipolar scales with seven response choices were developed. Following the pilot testing and subsequent revisions, 32 items were retained in the Attitude to Leisure-time Physical Activity scale. 10 items were retained in the Expectations of Others scale, 3 items were retained in the Perceived Control Scale, and 24 items were retained in the Intention to Engage in Leisure-time Physical Activity scale. Coefficients indicated adequate stability and internal consistency with α ranging from .81 to .96. Studies of validities are underway, after which scales would be made available to those interested in intervention techniques for promoting positive attitudes toward physical fitness, perception of control over engaging in leisure-lime physical activities, and good intentions to engage in leisure-time physical activities. The present results arc encouraging.

El presente estudio aborda la relación entre dos factores del estilo de vida que tienen una especial incidencia en la salud de los jóvenes, como son la práctica habitual de ejercicio físico y el consumo de tabaco. Para ello, se evaluaron en 6362 estudiantes de Enseñanza Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) y Post-obligatoria (ESPO) de ambos sexos (3129 varones y 3233 mujeres) el consumo de tabaco y la cantidad habitual de actividad física. Los resultados muestran que los adolescentes estudiados tienen patrones de comportamiento similares al resto de la población española en lo que se refiere al consumo habitual de tabaco y práctica de actividad física cotidiana. En lo que se refiere a la relación entre ambos hábitos, existen diferencias en el consumo habitual de tabaco en función de la cantidad e intensidad de actividad físico-deportiva realizada durante el tiempo libre.Abstrac: This study addresses the relationship between two lifestyle factors that have a particular impact on the health of young people, as are the usual practice of leisure-time physical activity and smoking. Smoking habits and leisure-time physical activity was assessed in a sample of 6362 high school students (3129 men and 3233 women) from Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and Post-compulsory Secondary Education (ESPO). The results show that patterns of smoking and leisure-time physical activity of our sample are similar to the rest of the Spanish adolescents. Regarding to the relationship between the two factors studied, differences in smoking habits depending on the quantity and intensity of leisure-time physical activity.

The lower of awareness, motivation, and self regulation students’ on learning is a major concern in science education. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effects of self-efficacy beliefs and metacognitive on academic performance among high school students based on gender on Genetic concept that include sub-concepts: Genetic Mendel, Heredity, and Mutation. Descriptive method is constructed this study. A total of 60 students XII grader of high school are participated in the study. Data were collected by Self-efficacy and Metacognitive Questionnaire, Genetic Concept Test, and Final Questionnaire.  Data were analyzed using inferential statistics, regression. Regression analysis indicated that self-efficacy and metacognitive was a strong predictor of academic performance. This case are showed by the value of regression, R = 0.612 so that self-efficacy and metacognitive were inferred was a strong predictor of academic performance. The other finding on this research show that male students are outperforming female students on self-efficacy, metacognitive, and academic performance, so that can be conducted a further research about how to increase level of self-efficacy and metacognitive on female students.

The most critical step in developing and implementing effective physical activity interventions is to understand the determinants and correlates of physical activity, and it is strongly suggested that such effort should be based on theories. The purpose of this study is to test the direct, indirect, and total effect of social cognitive theory constructs on physical activity among Korean male high-school students. Three-hundred and forty-one 10th-grade male students were recruited from a private single-sex high school located in Seoul, South Korea. Structural equation modeling was used to test the expected relationships among the latent variables. The proposed model accounted for 42% of the variance in physical activity. Self-efficacy had the strongest total effect on physical activity. Self-efficacy for being physically active was positively associated with physical activity ( p < .01). Self-efficacy also had positive indirect effects on physical activity through perceived benefits ( p < .05) and goal setting ( p < .01). The results of this study indicated that the social cognitive theory is a useful framework to understand physical activity among Korean male adolescents. Physical activity interventions targeting Korean male high-school students should focus on the major sources of efficacy.
