Fracture behavior of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 bulk metallic glass was investigated under quasi-static compression at strain rate of 10−4/s using an Instron testing machine and dynamic split Hopkinson bar (SHPB) compression with strain rate of about 1900–4300/s. Pronounced strain softening, especially past the peak stress, was observed under SHPB tests and compared with the distinct flow serrations under quasi-static tests. Scanning electron microscope revealed that the angle between the loading axis and major shear plane is less than 45°, deviating from the maximum shear stress plane. Microscopically, unlike the ordinary veinlike pattern found in quasi-static compression, the elongated veinlike pattern was observed at the onset position of rapid shearing under dynamic test. A closely arrayed dendritelike structure dominated the dynamic fracture, consequently, and should be the major pattern representing the rapid shear band propagation. In addition, a transition state from veinlike to dendritelike pattern was observed at the final instantaneous fracture region in quasi-static tests. Evidence revealed the characteristic dimension of dynamic fracture surface complies with Taylor’s meniscus instability criterion. The roles of free volume and adiabatic heating on the fracture strength and stress concentration on the fracture morphology are also discussed.

The negative strain rate sensitivity (SRS) of metallic glasses is frequently observed. However, the physical essence involved is still not well understood. In the present work, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) reveal the strong structure heterogeneity at nanometer and tens of nanometer scales, respectively, in bulk metallic glass (BMG) Zr64.13Cu15.75Ni10.12Al10 subjected to fully confined compression processing. A transition of SRS of stress, from 0.012 in the as-cast specimen to −0.005 in compression processed specimen, was observed through nanoindentation. A qualitative formulation clarifies the critical role of internal stress induced by structural heterogeneity in this transition. It reveals the physical origin of this negative SRS frequently reported in structurally heterogeneous BMG alloys and its composites.

7075-T651 aluminum alloy are widely used in aeronautical applications such as wing panels, but there is no corresponding constitutive model for it now. In this paper, the flow behavior of 7050-T651 aluminum alloy was investigated by Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) and quasi-static compression experiment system. The strain hardening parameters were obtained by quasi-static compression experiment data, and the strain rate hardening parameters at various strain rates (1000-3000s-1) and room temperature, and the thermal softening parameter at various temperatures (20-300°C) where strain rate is 3000s-1 were obtained by SHPB experiment data. Then the constitutive equation of 7075-T651 aluminum alloy is obtained based on Johnson-Cook constitutive equation model.

We investigated the effect of strain rate on the plastic-flow stress of a Zr-based bulk-metallic glass in quasistatic compression. The results indicate that the plastic-flow stress is dependent on the strain rate: an increase in the strain rate leads to a decrease in the plastic-flow stress, and vice versa. However, simply loading, unloading, and reloading at a constant strain rate do not change the plastic-flow stress. This strain-rate dependence of the plastic-flow stress may be related to shear-banding operations.

The study presents the effect of cell wall ductility and toughness on the compressive behaviour of closed-cell Al foams under static and dynamic loading and localised deformation by indentation. Two kinds of Al alloys including relatively ductile AlSiMg alloy and high-strength AlZnMg alloy, which comprises a great amount of brittle eutectic domains, were used as matrix materials. Both kinds of Al foams were fabricated via newly developed melt processing using the CaCO3-foaming agent without Ca additive. Mechanical behaviour of Al foams under quasi-static compression and indentation was examined and compared with that performed under dynamic loading using direct impact tests. Characteristic events revealed in deformation patterns of Al foams at quasi-static compression were also monitored with the CCD camera. Significant differences in stress-strain response and strain rate sensitivity of Al foams arose from the difference in the microstructure, and hence, ductility and toughness of the cell wall material were investigated and discussed.
