AbstractThis paper describes the programme for an in-situ radionuclide migration experiment in fractured crystalline rock and presents the first results of site characterisation work. This study is particularly notable for its extensive hydrologic/geochemical support programme and the use of radiotracers identified as important in safety assessment studies.

<p><span>Between early 2018 and late 2019 the STIMTEC hydraulic stimulation experiment was performed at ca.~130 m below surface at the Reiche Zeche research mine in Freiberg, Saxony/Germany. The project aims at gaining insight into the creation and growth of fractures in anisotropic and heterogeneous crystalline rock units, to develop and optimise hydraulic stimulation techniques and to control the associated induced seismicity under in situ conditions at the mine-scale. These aspects of failure and associated seismicity are important for the development of enhanced geothermal energy systems. We present the infrastructure developed for the STIMTEC experiment and provide an overview of the obtained data, including 295 m of core material retrieved from 17 boreholes, 225 m of acoustic TV log, >50 TB of continuous passive seismic data from four field stimulation and hydraulic testing campaigns, as well as ~300 active velocity calibration measurements. </span></p><p><span>W</span><span>e highlight some of the first results regarding the hydro-mechanical and seismic response to the stimulation, the rock mass characterisation in-situ and in the laboratory, as well as 3-D numerical modelling of the stress state and fracturing. The heterogeneity and anisotropy of the strongly foliated metamorphic gneiss significantly affects fracture creation and propagation </span><span>in the experiment.</span></p>

AbstractThe long-term programme of in-situ radionuclide migration experiments in the underground test site at Grimsel (GTS) involves the development and testing of radionuclide transport models with their associated databases. The field experiments are carried out in a water-bearing shear zone in crystalline rock utilising a suite of tracers of differing geochemical behaviour. A rigorous model testing procedure has been developed for the GTS radionuclide migration experiment. This paper describes application of this testing procedure to a solute transport code developed by PNC.

<p>Mont Terri rock laboratory, located in the Swiss Jurassic Mountains, was established with the focus on the investigation and analysys of the properties of argillaceous formations. The scope of Opalinus Clay as a safe, potential option for nuclear waste disposal was broaden, as the behaviour of claystone is of high interest also in the context of caprocks, and hence, for many dynamical processes in the subsurfaces. Extensive research has been performed already for more than 20 years by the partners of the Mont Terri Consortium. These close cooperations cover a broad range of scientific aspects using numerical modelling, laboratory studies, and last not least in-situ experiments. Here, included in the long-term monitoring programme, new investigations apply tiltmeters. Since April 2019, platform tiltmeters have been installed at various locations within the galleries and niches of Mont Terri. The biaxial instruments have resolutions of 1 nrad and 0.1 µrad, respectively (Applied Geomechanics and Lippmann Geophysikalische Messgeräte). The tilt measurements are embedded within various experiments contributing to specific, multiparametrical studies. However, the growing tilt network as a whole will also provide novel information of the rock laboratory. The different time-scales of interest include long-term observations of yearly and decadal variability. So far tilt signals were identified due to excavations during the recent enlargement of the laboratory, earthquake activity (Albania), and local effects. First results of these quasi-continuous recordings will be presented.</p>

Abstract. Organic matter preserved in Lake Ohrid sediments originates from aquatic and terrestrial sources. Its variable composition reflects climate-controlled changes in the lake basin's hydrology and related organic matter export, i.e. changes in primary productivity, terrestrial plant matter input and soil erosion. Here, we present first results from lipid biomarker investigations of Lake Ohrid sediments from two near-shore settings: site Lz1120 near the southern shore, with low-lying lands nearby and probably influenced by river discharge, and site Co1202 which is close to the steep eastern slopes. Variable proportions of terrestrial n-alkanoic acids and n-alkanols as well as compositional changes of ω-hydroxy acids document differences in soil organic matter supply between the sites and during different climate stages (glacial, Holocene, 8.2 ka cooling event). Changes in the vegetation cover are suggested by changes in the dominant chain length of terrestrial n-alkanols. Effective microbial degradation of labile organic matter and in situ contribution of organic matter derived from the microbes themselves are both evident in the sediments. We found evidence for anoxic conditions within the photic zone by detecting epicholestanol and tetrahymanol from sulphur-oxidising phototrophic bacteria and bacterivorous ciliates and for the influence of a settled human community from the occurrence of coprostanol, a biomarker for human and animal faeces (pigs, sheep, goats), in an early Holocene sample. This study illustrates the potential of lipid biomarkers for future environmental reconstructions using one of Europe's oldest continental climate archives, Lake Ohrid.

ABSTRACTIn accordance with the R&D framework specified by the Atomic Energy Commission of Japan in 2000 for the implementing phase of HLW disposal, the Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC) continues to be responsible for R&D activities aimed at enhancing the reliability of disposal technologies and safety assessment methodologies and associated databases. JNC has thus been actively promoting technical R&D with a view to contributing to both the implementation of disposal and the formulation of safety regulations.One of JNC's key roles is to establish and demonstrate site characterization methodologies based on investigations in two purpose-built generic URL (underground research laboratory) projects: one at Mizunami in crystalline rock and the other at Horonobe in sedimentary rock.Through the surface-based investigations in the Mizunami and Horonobe projects (phase 1), integration of work from different disciplines into a “geosynthesis” has been illustrated and is planned to be developed further in the underground facilities at these sites (phases 2 and 3). These projects also serve for developing and testing the tools and methodologies required for site characterization. Further know-how will be gained through participation in foreign underground laboratory projects, transfer of experience from these projects to Japan and tailoring it to Japanese conditions and requirements.This experience represents an important knowledge base, which is obviously important for the implementer but is also needed by the regulator, in order to assess how key site characteristics are derived and what uncertainties are associated with this process.
