AbstractWe present an efficient polymer-small molecule triple-tandem organic solar cell (OSC), consisting of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)-propyl-1-phenyl-(6,6)C61 (PCBM) bulk heterojunction as the first and second cells, and small molecules copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and fullerene (C60) as the third cell on top. These sub-cells are connected by an intermediate layer of Al(1 nm)/MoO3(15 nm), which appears to be highly transparent, structurally smooth, and electrically functional. Compared to our previous all polymer triple-tandem organic solar cells (2.03%), this polymer-small molecule triple-tandem organic solar cell achieves an improved power conversion efficiency of 2.18% with a short-circuit current density (Jsc) = 3.02 mA/cm2, open-circuit voltage (Voc) = 1.51 V, and fill factor (FF) = 47.7% under simulated solar irradiation of 100 mW/cm2 (AM1.5G), which can be attributed to the increased photocurrent generation in the third cell since the third cell has the complementary absorption with two bottom cells despite a slightly reduced Voc.

Modification of a cell’s architecture can enhance the performance parameters. This paper reports on the numerical modeling of a thin-film organic solar cell (OSC) featuring distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) pairs. The utilization of DBR pairs via the proposed method was found to be beneficial in terms of increasing the performance parameters. The extracted results showed that using DBR pairs helps capture the reflected light back into the active region by improving the photovoltaic parameters as compared to the structure without DBR pairs. Moreover, implementing three DBR pairs resulted in the best enhancement gain of 1.076% in power conversion efficiency. The measured results under a global AM of 1.5G were as follows: open circuit voltage (Voc) = 0.839 V; short circuit current density (Jsc) = 10.98 mA/cm2; fill factor (FF) = 78.39%; efficiency (η) = 11.02%. In addition, a thermal stability analysis of the proposed design was performed and we observed that high temperature resulted in a decrease in η from 11.02 to 10.70%. Our demonstrated design may provide a pathway for the practical application of OSCs.

In this paper, we explore the characteristics of bulk heterojunction solar cell based on poly (3-hexyl thiophene) [P3HT] and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester [PCBM] by introducing a buffer layer with device configuration of ITO/ZnO/P3HT:PCBM/Au. Nanostructured ZnO with individual diameter around 20-50 nm was used as the buffer layer and its effects on the short circuit current density, Jsc and open circuit voltage, Voc were investigated. It was found that, the electrical characteristic of the organic solar cell was obviously changed by introducing the buffer layer. Solar cell characteristic with Voc of 0.3939 V was obtained but the Jsc was very small. The surface topology of the P3HT:PCBM was investigated using an atomic force microscopy (AFM). ZnO nanoparticles were observed using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and the electrical properties of the solar cell was measured using a solar simulator with a current – voltage (I-V) measurement system.

Organic solar cells using P3HT: PCBM as an active layer on ITO coated glass substrates were fabricated and characterized. Different air annealing procedures and cathode materials were tried and the characteristics were compared with that of a standard thin film polycrystalline silicon solar cell. It was found that the sample prepared with post-deposition air annealing at 130 oC improves the open circuit voltage (Voc) considerably. Besides, short circuit current (Isc) and the efficiency (η) were highest for the sample with a non annealed active layer. Series resistance (Rs) for this sample was lowest, but 103 times higher than that of the silicon solar cell, which in turn may have reduced the efficiency value for the organic cell compared to silicon.

Small molecule organic solar cell with an optimized structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) (10nm)/CuPc: C60mixed (20nm)/fullerene (C60) (20nm)/bathocuproine (BCP) (10nm)/Al) was fabricated. With optimizing the hybrid planar-mixed molecular heterojunction (PM-HJ) from the double layer heterojunction (HJ) and the bulk heterojunction (BHJ), the short-circuit current density (Jsc) increased from 3.09 to 5.11mA/cm2, the open-circuit voltage (Voc) increased from 0.40 to 0.47V, and the power conversion efficiency (ηp) increased from 0.66 to 1.28% under 100mW/cm2 AM1.5G illumination. These improvements were attributed to reach the optimal balance among the light absorption efficiency, the exciton dissociation efficiency and the carrier collection efficiency of the device, resulting in enhancement of Jscwithout affecting the value of fill factor (FF) and the reduction of the dark current. Furthermore a decrease of dark current is caused to the higher Voc.

A single layer of organic solar cells with the Al/P3HT/PEDOT: PSS/ITO structure on glass substrate was investigated in this paper, and examined the performance of the polymer solar cells by changing 60, 70 and 80 nm thickness of the P3HT active layer. These devices had better absorption in the active layer and poor charges collect in the electrode with increase thickness of active layer were observed. It is found that the best properties that the single layer organic solar cell with open-circuit voltage 0.457 V, short-circuit current 1.05E-4 mA and power conversion efficiency of 3.3E-5% was achieved under illumination 100 mW/cm2 when the thickness of P3HT active layer is about 80 nm.

To explore the effect of the introduction of heteroatoms on the properties of porphyrin materials, a new porphyrin-based derivative small-molecule donor named as PorTT-T was designed and synthesized based on alkyl-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene(TT)-substituted porphyrins. The linker bridge and end groups of PorTT-T were the same as those of XLP-II small-molecule donor materials, while the side-chain attached to the core of thieno[3,2-b]thiophene(TT)-substituted porphyrin was different. Measurements of intrinsic properties showed that PorTT-T has wide absorption and appropriate energy levels in the UV-visible range. A comparison of the morphologies of the two materials using atomic force microscopy showed that PorTT-T has a better surface morphology with a smaller root-mean-square roughness, and can present closer intermolecular stacking as compared to XLP-II. The device characterization results showed that PorTT-T with the introduced S atom has a higher open circuit voltage of 0.886 eV, a higher short circuit current of 12.03 mAcm−2, a fill factor of 0.499, a high photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 5.32%, better external quantum efficiency in the UV-visible range, and higher hole mobility.

Abstract Tandem cell with structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/ molybdenum oxide (MoO3)/ fullerene (C60) / copper phthalocyanine (CuPc)/ C60 / tris-8-hydroxy- quinolinato aluminum (Alq3)/Al was fabricated to study the effect of net carriers at the interconnection layer. The open circuit voltage and short circuit current were found to be 1.15 V and 0.56 mA/cm2, respectively. Almost the same performance (1.05 V, 0.58 mA/cm2) of tandem cell with additional recombination layer (ITO/MoO3/C60/Alq3/Al/Ag/MoO3/CuPc/C60/Alq3/Al) demonstrates that carrier balance is more crucial than carrier recombination. The net holes at the interconnection layer caused by more carrier generation from the back cell on one hand would enhance the recombination with electrons from the front cell and on the other hand would quench the excitons produced in CuPc of the back cell.
