Dermestes maculatus is a major pest of stored fish in Nigeria, fish is preserved with highly persistent synthetic chemicals. There have been an increasing effort at developing plant-based toxicants that are environmentally friendly. Therefore, this study was conducted to screen the leaf extract of Azadirachta indica for phytochemical constituents. The efficacy of the methanolic leaf extract of the plant against D. maculatus was also evaluated. The leaves of A. indica were obtained, processed and taken to laboratory for methanolic extraction. Phytochemical screening was carried out to identify saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, steroids, cardiac glycosides, glycosides, triterpenes and carbohydrates using standard procedure.  Both clean and infested samples of smoke-dried Clarias gariepinus were purchased from Sabon Gari Market, Zaria. The infested samples were used as initial source of D. maculatus larvae. Range finding test was carried out prior to the bioassay. During the bioassay, clean un-infested fish samples were weighed and introduced into kilner jars and respective dosages of 0.2g, 0.4g, 0.6g and 0.8g of extract were added. Another set of fish samples without the extract were maintained as control. The experiment was arranged in Completely Randomized Design with three replicates. Fifteen larvae of D. maculatus were introduced into both treated and control containers and covered. Mortality was recorded after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. Data obtained revealed an increase in mortality with increasing dose and time. Mortality ranged from 1.67 to 11.00. Therefore, leaf extract of A. indica should be incorporated in the development of larvicide against D. maculatus.

As in other districts of Nepal, medicinal plants have played a significant role in the life of local people of Baitadi and Darchula districts by providing products for trade, subsistence and traditional therapies. Present study analyzed the pharmacological activities of the species which had the highest informant consensus factor. The use of Asparagus racemosus as galactogogue with consensus factor 0.97, Berberis asiatica for eye troubles with 1.0, Cordyceps sinensis as tonic and longevity with 0.97, Curculigo orchoides as tonic and aphrodisiac with 0.96, Nardostachya grandiflora for epilepsy with 0.97 and Phyllanthus emblica as diuretic with 0.97 possessed the highest consensus factors and greatest affinity to the Ayurveda and phytochemical findings. Phytochemical screening and validity assessments of the medicinal plant widely used in traditional therapies are worthwhile. The findings with the maximum affinity of informant consensus factors and phyto-chemical validations provide the potential to identify which plants are most likely to be useful in the treatment of diseases. This study investigated the wound healing potential of hexane and methanolic seed extracts of Azadirachta indica using 35 wistar rats that were divided into 5 groups of 7 rats each. Phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activity of the extracts were carried out while the wound healing potential was evaluated by treating the test rats with 5 % and 10 % hexane and methanol extracts in an experiment that lasted for 21 days. Wound area and percentage of wound closure of the rats were noted at four-day intervals and at 21 days, the blood and organs of the rats were subjected to haematological and histopathological analyses respectively. The extracts were found to contain tannins, glycosides and phenols and they inhibited the growth of tested organisms. All the test rats displayed better and faster healing than the control ones but there were no significant differences between their haematological and histophatological results. The seed extracts quickened the wound healing process of the rats and might therefore be useful in wound treatment.

ABSTRACT Neem (Azadirachta indica A.Juss) is a plant that potentially developed for antibacterial agent for both the leaves and barks. The aims of this study were to compare the effectiveness of the antibacterial activity of neem leav es and stem barks extract and to identify the antibacterial compounds of the most active fractions. The extraction method was done using sonication method. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using wells solid diffusion method and TLC-Bioautography. Extract fractionation was conducted using liquid-liquid partitioning method. The chemical compounds of extracts and fractions were analyzed using TLC and GCMS. The result of sonication extraction obtained neem leaves oil (12,02%), leaves crude extract (4,3%) and stem barks crude extract (16,85%). The major chemical constituents of GCMS analysis are 2,3-Dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one (6,06%), L-proline,1-Acetyl-(CAS) Acetylproline (5,85%), 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid (21,42%), 2,3-Dyhidrobenzofuran (2,69%), alpha-D-methylglucopyranoside (4,54%), palmitic acid (2,92%), Arabino-hex-1-enitol, 1,5-Anhydro-2-deoxy-(CAS) glucal (31,69%). Phytochemical screening of neem leaves oil, leaves and barks crude extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, triterpenoids, steroids and sterols. Antibacterial test results showed neem leaves oil was more effective than leaves and stem barks crude extract against Escherichia coli. The n-hexane fraction showed higher antibacterial activity than ethyl acetate fraction and ethanol fraction. Phytochemical screening of n-hexane fraction showed the presence of triterpenoids, steroids, sterols and phenols.   Mimba (Azadirachta indica A.Juss) merupakan tanaman yang berpotensi dikembangkan sebagai antibakteri baik bagian daun maupun kulit batang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan efektivitas antibakteri ekstrak daun dan kulit batang mimba terhadap Escherichia coli dan untuk mengidentifikasi golongan senyawa potensial antibakteri pada fraksi teraktif. Pengujian aktivitas antibakteri dilakukan dengan metode difusi padat menggunakan sumuran dan KLT-Bioautografi. Fraksinasi ekstrak dilakukan dengan metode partisi. Komponen kimia ekstrak dan fraksi dianalisis menggunakan KLT dan GCMS. Hasil ekstraksi sonikasi diperoleh minyak daun (12,02%), ekstrak kasar daun (4,3%) dan ekstrak kasar kulit batang (16,85%). Skrining fitokimia menunjukkan minyak daun, ekstrak kasar daun dan ekstrak kulit batang mimba mengandung senyawa alkaloid, flavonoid, fenolik, saponin, triterpenoid, steroid dan sterol. Komponen kimia mayor hasil analisis GCMS minyak daun mimba adalah 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one (6,06%), L-proline,1-Acetyl-(CAS)Acetylproline (5,85%), 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid (21,42%), 2,3-dyhidrobenzofuran (2,69%), Alpha-d-methylglucopyranoside (4,54%), Asam Palmitat (2,92%), Arabino-hex-1-enitol, 1,5-anhydro-2-deoxy-(CAS)glucal (31,69%). Hasil uji antibakteri menunjukkan minyak daun lebih efektif menghambat pertumbuhan Escherichia coli dibandingkan dengan ekstrak kasar daun dan kulit batang. Fraksi n-heksan menunjukkan aktivitas antibakteri paling besar dibandingkan dengan fraksi etil asetat dan etanol. Hasil skrining fitokimia fraksi n-heksan menunjukkan adanya senyawa triterpenoid, steroid, sterol dan fenolik.
