AbstractThe thermal analysis of Modified 9Cr-1Mo steel plate during GTA welding is carried out using finite element method employing SYSWELD software. First, the simulation of bead on plate welds for 16 varying process parameter conditions by employing a double ellipsoidal heat source was carried out. Simulated bead on plate weld bead dimensions for the 16 welds were compared with the actual bead dimensions obtained experimentally. Then the simulation of GTA welding of square butt joint on 3 mm thick plates of dimensions 300 × 125 × 3 mm was carried out. The simulated thermal profiles were validated using thermocouple measurements. There was good agreement between the predicted and measured weld bead profiles and thermal cycles for square butt joint. The investigation on the effect of copper back up plate on the peak temperature and the cooling rate has revealed that the peak temperature decreased by 147 °C and the cooling rate increased by 35%.

Abstract This paper focusses on effect of flat wire electrode on gas metal arc welding (FW-GMAW) inline during the process to improve quality of weld bead. Since the flat wire electrode perimeter has enlarged, the turbulence of the molten droplet characteristics is altered due to the effect of electromagnetic force. To bring out, butt joint welding are proven with use of the flat wire electrode. The experimental results indicated that, the flat wire electrode and their orientations are significantly factors to improve the weld bead dimensions, due to the increased in steady state temperature and heat density. The end result also evident that the depth-to-width (D/W) ratio was improved on an average by 7.7 % than regular wire electrode used in GMAW. To validate, a comprehensive numerical model was developed, the result confirmed that the initial arc and steady state temperature are high for FW-GMAW. In addition, improvements in metallurgical and mechanical properties are discussed in this paper.

This paper studies the butt welded joint of SUS316L stainless steel. The butt joint is not beveled, has a gap and is welded in one pass by MIG welding process. First, the welding parameters of this weld are determined through calculation and test welding for the butt joint of two plates of 3 mm in thickness. Then these welding parameters are used as input data to calculate and determine the temperature field by two methods: the calculation method based on the theory of heat transfer process and the numerical simulation method of welding processes that relies on SYSWELD software on the basis of the finite element method. The calculation results of the two methods were compared with each other and tested by experiment to show the reliability of calculation and simulation results.
