PURPOSE: To present recent studies that used the ultrasound in the fields of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology, which evidence possibilities of the applicability of this technique in different subareas. RESEARCH STRATEGY: A bibliographic research was carried out in the PubMed database, using the keywords "ultrasonic," "speech," "phonetics," "Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences," "voice," "deglutition," and "myofunctional therapy," comprising some areas of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences. The keywords "ultrasound," "ultrasonography," "swallow," "orofacial myofunctional therapy," and "orofacial myology" were also used in the search. SELECTION CRITERIA: Studies in humans from the past 5 years were selected. In the preselection, duplicated studies, articles not fully available, and those that did not present direct relation between ultrasound and Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences were discarded. DATA ANALYSIS: The data were analyzed descriptively and classified subareas of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences. The following items were considered: purposes, participants, procedures, and results. RESULTS: We selected 12 articles for ultrasound versus speech/phonetics subarea, 5 for ultrasound versus voice, 1 for ultrasound versus muscles of mastication, and 10 for ultrasound versus swallow. Studies relating "ultrasound" and "Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences" in the past 5 years were not found. CONCLUSION: Different studies on the use of ultrasound in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences were found. Each of them, according to its purpose, confirms new possibilities of the use of this instrument in the several subareas, aiming at a more accurate diagnosis and new evaluative and therapeutic possibilities.

Abstract In recent years, major changes have occurred in the field of speech-language pathology and education. In the past 2 decades researchers, educators, and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have increased their focus on the identification, assessment, and treatment of reading disabilities in children (Catts, 1991; Catts, Fey, Zhang, & Tomblin, 2001; Justice & Ezell, 2004; Kaderavek & Justice, 2004). The primary goal of this article is to discuss a variety of ways that the speech-language pathologist can be both directly and indirectly involved in working with children who present with language and reading impairments. For example, Baylor University's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders has had the opportunity to be involved in the prevention, identification, and treatment of reading disabilities in children both in a direct and indirect way.

AbstractFor children with voice disorders, access to care has long been a challenge. Reasons for this include the challenge of qualifying children with isolated voice disorders for services within the public-school system as well as a family's geographic proximity to experienced clinicians who are in the healthcare system. Over the past decade, there have been both formal and informal investigations into the use of telepractice to deliver services to communicatively disordered children and adults, including those with voice disorders. Although barriers and obstacles existed, use of telepractice to deliver such services demonstrated both feasibility and, in some studies, effective outcomes. However, prior to spring of 2020, use of telepractice to deliver speech pathology services was not mainstream. This changed when the nation was forced to shut down many of its in-person healthcare and educational delivery due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This article summarizes select relevant literature pertaining to the use of telepractice in speech language pathology over the past decade and provides a case-based discussion of how it was and is currently being used to deliver pediatric voice care.

Purpose Despite the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's (ASHA's) endorsement of evidence-based practice (EBP) and speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') agreement on the importance of EBP, practicing clinicians report barriers to implementing EBP. The purpose of this study was to examine trends in clinical practice research published in ASHA journals over the past 11 years (2008–2018). Method A total of 2,483 articles from the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology ; Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools ; and Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research were extracted for coding. Coders were licensed SLPs who were trained to 80% reliability on classifying the type of research in each article. Clinical practice research articles were further classified as studies on assessment, studies on intervention, and studies that explore the implementation of EBP. Results Clinical practice research comprised the minority of literature published in ASHA journals in the field of speech-language pathology (25%). These articles were composed of assessment (10%), intervention (15%), and implementation (< 1%). These articles were distributed across a variety of primary content areas, with an absence of implementation science for the majority of clinical areas. Conclusions The lack of clinical practice research readily available to practicing SLPs is a barrier to EBP. The results of this study underscore the need for increased clinical practice research. Future work should investigate EBP in the context of clinician–researcher partnerships and increasing the capacity of clinicians to conduct clinical practice research. Children’s acquisition of adult-like speech production has fascinated speech-language pathologists for over a century, and data gained from associated research have informed every aspect of speech-language pathology practice. The acquisition of the consonant cluster has received little attention during this time, even though the consonant cluster is a common feature of speech, its acquisition is one of the most protracted of all aspects of children’s speech development, and the production of consonant clusters is one of the most common difficulties for children with speech impairment. This paper reviews the literature from the past 70 years to describe children’s normal acquisition of consonant clusters. Articulatory, phonological, linguistic, and acoustic approaches to the development of consonant clusters are reviewed. Data from English are supplemented with examples from other languages. Consideration of the information on consonant cluster development revealed 10 aspects of normal development that can be used in speech-language pathologists’ assessment and analysis of children’s speech.

OBJECTIVES: To present the main characteristics, diagnosis and physiotherapeutic approach of pediatric patients infected with COVID-19. METHODS: This is an integrative literature review carried out from February to June 2020 regarding the physiotherapeutic approach in children diagnosed with COVID- 19. The search was performed in the PubMed database with the keywords “coronavirus”, “pediatric”, and “physiotherapy” crossed by through the boolean “AND” operator in the past four months. Articles that addressed only the subtype COVID-19 in pediatric patients were included and duplicate articles were excluded. In addition, research was carried out on protocols/articles from the Ministry of Health and Associations. RESULTS: 273 articles were found in the PubMed database; however, 25 were included according to the selection criteria previously determined, in addition to 1 articles/association protocols that were also included. CONCLUSIONS: It was verified through this integrative review that the main characteristics of pediatric patients infected by COVID-19 are: mean age of involvement of 7 years; transmission by direct and/or indirect contact with respiratory droplets; different pathophysiology of adults due to different immune response; and mild symptoms with a good prognosis. The diagnosis is given by the clinical picture and categorized by severity: asymptomatic, mild, moderate, severe, and very serious. Among the proposed approaches, the following stand out: oxygen therapy, invasive mechanical ventilation, maintenance of the elevated headboard (30º-45º), prone position, and early mobilization.

Purpose: The majority of supervision literature has focused on the supervision of graduate students. The purpose of this study was to examine the preparation of and explore the thinking styles of mentoring speech-language pathologists (SLPs) of Speech-Language Pathology graduates who are completing their clinical fellowship. Method: A questionnaire was sent to 1626 SLPs by email who reported working in school settings and 102 participants responded. They were asked questions about demographics, caseloads, supervisory experiences, knowledge of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA, 2008) standards for supervision, and thinking styles. Forty of the participants reported on the number of years of experience they had with supervision and reported mentoring a clinical fellow in the past 3 years. These 40 participants were divided into two groups: mentoring SLPs with less experience (LEM; 1–5 years) and mentoring SLPs with more experience (MEM; 6 or more years). Results: The LEM and MEM groups demonstrated different patterns in meeting and contacting their Clinical Fellows (CF) and in participating in training activities for mentoring SLPs. There were also differences in the thinking styles of the groups. The MEM group rated themselves as having preferences for tasks that allowed them to work on one thing at a time as well as tasks that had a more global focus more than those in the LEM group. Conclusions: Differences in thinking styles may affect the style of supervision and mentoring. These relationships warrant further examination.

RESUMO Objetivos Investigar estudos sobre o tratamento das queimaduras em cabeça e pescoço, nas diversas áreas da saúde envolvidas na assistência a queimados (médica, enfermagem, fonoaudiologia, fisioterapia e terapia ocupacional), avaliando a eficácia das técnicas empregadas, principalmente no que se refere à reabilitação da funcionalidade da musculatura em cabeça e pescoço. Estratégia de pesquisa Os artigos foram selecionados por meio da base de dados PubMed, utilizando os descritores “burn and face and speech-language pathology”, “burn and face and speech language”, “burn and face and rehabilitation”, “burn and face and myofunctional rehabilitation”, “burn and face and myofunctional therapy”, “nonsurgical and scar and management”, “burn and face and nonsurgical” e “burn and face and scar and management”. Critérios de seleção Foram incluídos artigos que investigaram os tratamentos das queimaduras em cabeça e pescoço, associados à reabilitação da funcionalidade da musculatura em cabeça e pescoço, utilizando exercícios musculares e/ou terapias manuais. Resultados A maioria dos tratamentos descritos apresentou efeitos benéficos para pacientes com queimaduras. Foi observada grande variabilidade da metodologia adotada para a aplicação e verificação dos efeitos dos tratamentos. Conclusão Apesar do crescente número de pesquisas, ainda não existe consenso quanto à melhor técnica terapêutica e ao real benefício de cada uma delas. Existe uma grande diversidade nos protocolos de tratamento, sendo que um número pequeno de estudos de tratamento visa a funcionalidade do sistema miofuncional orofacial. A maioria dos estudos tem, como foco, atividades motoras isoladas, que visam à mobilidade mandibular.

The clinical dimensions of the supervisory process have at times been neglected. In this article, we explain the various stages of Goldhammer's clinical supervision model and then describe specific procedures for supervisors in the public schools to use with student teachers. This easily applied methodology lends clarity to the task and helps the student assimilate concrete data which may have previously been relegated to subjective impressions of the supervisor.
