OBJECTIVE To analyze the effectiveness of 2% and 4% papain gels in tissue repair of venous ulcers. METHOD Quasi-experimental study with consecutive sample of 16 patients with 30 venous ulcers treated at the outpatient clinic of a teaching hospital, from April to November in 2011, using a form for clinical assessment of the patient and its lesion. Variables were analyzed by Wilcoxon and McNemar test (p < 0.05). RESULTS Most participants were female; aged between 51 and 59 years; obese; with hypertension. Regarding ulcers, there was an average decrease of 7.9 cm2 (50% of its original size) in 90 days; 20% of the ulcers completely healed within 56.67 days. There was an increase in epithelialization, significant reduction in the slough and edema, improved depth, in the type and amount of exudate (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION 2% and 4% papain gels were effective in healing venous ulcers.

Objective.To determine the effect of nurse-led multidisciplinary rounds on reducing the unnecessary use of urinary catheters (UCs).Design.Quasi-experimental study with a control group, in 3 phases: preintervention, intervention, and postintervention.Setting.Twelve medical-surgical units within a 608-bed teaching hospital, from May 2006 through April 2007.Intervention.A nurse trained in the indications for UC utilization participated in daily multidisciplinary rounds on 10 medical-surgical units. If no appropriate indication for a patient's UC was found, the patient's nurse was asked to contact the physician to request discontinuation. Data were collected before the intervention (for 5 days), during the intervention (for 10 days), and 4 weeks after the intervention (for 5 days). Two units served as controls.Results.Of 4,963 patient-days observed, a UC was present in 885 (for a total of 885 “UC-days”). There was a significant reduction in the rate of UC utilization from 203 UC-days per 1,000 patient-days in the preintervention phase to 162 UC-days per 1,000 patient-days in the intervention phase (P = .002). The postintervention rate of 187 UC-days per 1,000 patient-days was higher than the rate during the intervention (P = .05) but not significantly different from the preintervention rate (P = .32). The rate of unnecessary use of UCs also decreased from 102 UC-days per 1,000 patient-days in the preintervention phase to 64 UC-days per 1,000 patient-days during the intervention phase (P < .001); and, significantly, the rate rose to 91 UC-days per 1,000 patient-days in the postintervention phase (P = .01). The rate of discontinuation of unnecessary UCs in the intervention phase was 73 (45%) of 162.Conclusions.A nurse-led multidisciplinary approach to evaluate the need for UCs was associated with a reduction of unnecessary UC use. Efforts to sustain the intervention-induced reduction may be successful when trained advocates continue this effort with each team.

Abstract Background and Aim: Improper administration of oxygen as an expensive drug has dangerous side effects. Nurses are responsible for performing this therapy and even prescribing it in emergencies. This study aimed to determine the effect of two methods of mastery learning and lectures on the oxygen therapy knowledge and practice of nurses in a teaching hospital in southern Iran.Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 50 nurses working in a teaching hospital in southern Iran. The participants were selected using convenience sampling and randomly divided into intervention and control groups. The members of the intervention group attended 4 oxygen therapy master learning sessions, while the members of the control group were trained using the lecture method for 4 sessions. The instruments used for data collection were a demographic information questionnaire and the researcher-made nurses’ oxygen therapy knowledge and practice inventories that were completed by the participants in both groups. The data were collected before the intervention and one week and three months after the intervention and analyzed using SPSS software with descriptive and inferential statistics.Results: The findings indicated that the nurses had poor oxygen therapy knowledge and practice before the intervention. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the mean scores of oxygen therapy knowledge and practice before the intervention. It was also shown that oxygen therapy knowledge and practice were significantly improved one week and three months after the learning mastery intervention in the participants in the intervention group (P < 0.001). In contrast, only the oxygen therapy knowledge of the members of the control group showed a significant increase three months after the intervention compared to the pre-intervention stage (P = 0.04). Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the mastery learning model is an effective model for improving and maintaining the nurses’ oxygen therapy knowledge and practice. Since nurses’ optimal practice improves the quality of care and increases patient safety, mastery learning can be used as an effective training technique to improve nurses’ oxygen therapy practice.

The aims of this study were: (1) to identify an increase in students' understanding of the value of mutual cooperation through the use of reader response rules in Indonesian Language Learning (KRPDPBI); (2) identifying the use of the reader response principle in Indonesian Language learning (KRPDPBI) there are differences between male and female students. The design of this study used a quasi-experimental study with two different methods. The results showed that (1) the achievement of the score of understanding the value of mutual cooperation for students taught by KRPDPBI was better than for students taught by regular learning according to the curriculum; (2) the achievement of the understanding of the value of male students' mutual cooperation is no better than that of female students.
