ABSTRACT: Clostridium chauvoei toxin A (CctA), neuraminidase (NanA), and flagellin (FliC) proteins contribute to the pathogenicity of Clostridium chauvoei, the causative agent of blackleg in cattle. The aim of this study was to analyze the genetic variability of cctA, nanA, and fliC genes in C. chauvoei isolates from the Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo state- Brazil, during different sampling periods. The presence of these genes was verified through PCR amplification and partial gene sequencing of 17 strains. Alignment of PCR amplicons combined with bioinformatics analysis was used in an attempt to study the variability across C. chauvoei solates. The similarity among the partial sequences of cctA and nanA genes was 100%. The sequencing of fliC revealed three different paralog alleles of flagellin, and two strains were seen to be polymorphic, with amino acid alterations in the predicted protein. Overall, this study indicates that strains of C. chauvoei isolated in Brazil are highly conserved with respect to the virulence factors evaluated.

Heimbra bicolor Subba Rao, 1978 (Hymenoptera, Eurytomidae) was previously known in Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, with records in Federal District and Rio Grande do Norte, Minas Gerais, and Santa Catarina states. Here, we newly report this species from the state of São Paulo based on three females collected at Estação Ecológica de Jataí, in the municipality of Luiz Antônio, São Paulo state, Brazil. Additionally, we provide a map with the geographical distribution of the species based on the new record and literature. This record increases the number of species of Heimbra known in São Paulo state to two species.

Abstract: Fly larvae from the Gasterophilinae subfamily of the Oestridae family are parasites of domestic (equine) and wild (rhinos and equine) odd-hoofed ungulates (Perissodactyla). The gastric parasite of African Rhinos is Gyrostigma rhinocerontis (formerly Gyrostigma pavesii), which in its larva phase can be found in the feces of their hosts and can reach 40mm length. The adult is the largest fly in Africa, reaching 41mm long, with 71-mm wingspan. The Gyrostigma genus does not occur naturally in Brazil. There is one previous report of the occurrence of its larvae in the feces of a white rhino brought from South Africa in the 1990's, which was housed in a zoo located in Rio Grande do Sul. The present paper furnishes data from a zoo of the city of Itatiba, São Paulo state, Brazil, where Gyrostigma rhinocerontis larvae were found in 2005 in the feces of a group of white rhinos (Ceratotherium simum) legally imported from South Africa. The rhinos were kept in a breeding and preservation farm. This paper also reports the measures taken to control the case and avoid the dissemination of the parasite, calling attention to the fact of globalization, which allows international and intercontinental transit of wild animals with potential risks of adaptation of exotic parasites to new ecosystems.

A chytrid fungus Olpidium gregarium was found in Rio Grande Reservoir as rotifers populations' parasite. Along the reservoir central axis, the rotifers density decreased in the dam direction, while the density of affected rotifers by the chytrid fungus increased in the same direction. Moreover, some rotifers species were more affected than others, thus showing certain preference for some rotifers species. Thereby, this parasite may be interfering in the distribution of rotifers population in Rio Grande Reservoir. This is the first report of this species for Brazil.

Terrestrial Isopods were sampled in four protected Atlantic Forest areas located in Serra do Mar, state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. A total of 2,217 individuals of six species (Atlantoscia sp., Benthana werneri, Pseudodiploexochus tabularis, Pudeoniscus obscurus, Styloniscus spinosus and Trichorhina sp.) were captured in pitfall traps. The exotic species S. spinosus is recorded for the first time for the Americas. Another introduced species, P. tabularis, previously recorded only from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, had its geographic distribution extended to the state of São Paulo. The most abundant isopods in this study belong to an undescribed species of Atlantoscia.
