PurposeIn the last 50 years, every Olympics has experienced a major cost overrun. This paper explores the reasons for this cost underestimation and looks into the occurrence of the winner's curse. We also forecast the spending pattern of future host cities. Finally, we discuss the role of the International Olympic Committee in making the Olympic Games more efficient and sustainable.Design/methodology/approachThe review of literature on the topic of constant cost overrun in the Olympic Games is surprisingly very thin. We comprehensively review the existing literature to understand the scholarship in this area. This paper also produces future cost trends for the host cities.FindingsWe argue that cost underestimation is resulting from the outdated bid process which encourages spectacle over efficiency. A no-bid environment is more efficient and allows the host city to negotiate effectively with the International Olympic Committee. The Los Angeles Games of 1984 was profitable and has shown reusing the infrastructure can save a lot of money which could help make the Olympic Games economically sustainable.Originality/valueThis paper adds to the existing knowledge on the cost overrun aspect of Olympics financing. We also forecast the cost trends of hosting future Olympics.

Residents’ support for hosting the Olympic Games is crucial for a bid to succeed in the Olympic host-city selection process. Because of the vital role of the media in framing public perceptions of Olympic bids, the purpose of this study was to examine media coverage of hosting the Olympic Games during the Olympic host-city bid process. A quantitative content analysis was conducted on newspaper articles about Pyeongchang, Korea. Pyeongchang was a candidate city for 3 consecutive bids for the Winter Olympic Games, and it finally won its latest bid to host the 2018 Games. Six hundred Korean newspaper articles were collected for analysis. The results indicated that positive, nationwide discussions of hosting the Olympic Games were presented during the successful bid. Infrastructure legacy was mentioned frequently and dominantly for both successful and unsuccessful bid periods, whereas the presence of sport-development and sociocultural-legacy themes increased in the latest, successful, bid. In addition, extensive coverage related to celebrity endorsement was found during the successful bid.

AbstractThe world of sports is a reflection of the world of politics. It is becoming increasingly multipolar with the emerging states hosting mega sporting events. Firstly, the article problematizes the concept of multipolarity and, secondly, globalisation by questioning whether the Olympic Games reinforce national identities and promote national interests by using Olympic diplomacy as a soft power tool. In doing so, the article explores the correlation between the changes in international affairs and the hosting of and participation at the Olympic Games by emerging states such as Brazil, China and Russia. The analysis distinguishes globalisation from the role of the nation-state, by highlighting the evident differences between emerging states in terms of hosting the Games, but also takes into consideration geopolitical and geo-economic parameters.

In ancient Greece, during the Olympic Games, in addition to sports competitions, scholars and poets also publicized their works. According to legend, Herodotus' work "History" was introduced to the public during the Olympics and spread throughout the country. Each country is proud of its genius. "Education which equates people with people", stated Auezov in his speech, a Kazakhstani writer. Assessment is important in the classroom at school every day. Assessment for learning is a process of developing and interpreting information that students and their teachers use to determine where they are in the learning process, in what direction they need to develop and how to reach the desired level. The Olympic Games in Beijing – The Victory of Market Forces over MoralDespite the severe criticism against Beijing as host of the Olympic Games the number of influential state representatives from various countries at the opening ceremony had never been larger. In view of the strong moral criticism of the problems with the human rights in China, this is difficult to understand. Why did so many governments decide to support China and the Olympics in the end? This is one of the crucial questions to be answered in this article. The starting point of the analysis is the statement that the moral arguments were overruled by economic interests and the politics of power. Thus the article examines and points out Chinas powerful economic role and the role of some of the most important Olympic sponsors in the world economy with respect to questions of international politics.
