After liberalisation established new relations in Slovak economy, it seemed that problems of agricultural companies differentiation would disappear. But the economic results of our companies confirm the existence of this problem. In the pre-reform period, agricultural production intensity was considered as a main factor of economic differentiation. Transformation of economy after 1990 changed the methodological approach to business performance evaluation. The interest was shifted towards the value evaluation comparing businesses with regard to financial indicators. These methods enable to classify enterprises into bonity classes and to set their sequence according to performance.

The total number of small and medium-sized enterprises signifies an essential share of the national economy; SMEs’ importance is evaluated by the value added and the new jobs created. Despite the growing research interest in the small and medium business performance measurement, there is no consistent opinion among researchers regarding small and medium business performance indicators, their measurement, and methods of assessment. The research study is based on an analysis of literature and scientific publications, the assessment of the financial indicators used by the Latvian institutions for the company’s financial analysis, and an expert survey. The general scientific research methods are used in the research study: information analysis and synthesis, logical construction, monographic, an expert survey, data grouping, and the graphical method. The aim of the research – to carry out an analysis of the performance evaluation practice for small and medium-sized enterprises in Latvia. A study of the small and medium sized business performance measurement and management is carried out and the analysis of the financial indicators used for the performance measurement of small and medium-sized enterprises is performed in the result.

High soils salinity is a main factor affecting agricultural production. Studying the function of salt-tolerance-related genes is essential to enhance crop tolerance to stress.Rab7is a small GTP-binding protein that is distributed widely among eukaryotes. Endocytic trafficking mediated byRab7plays an important role in animal and yeast cells, but the current understanding ofRab7in plants is still very limited. Herein, we isolated a vesicle trafficking gene,OsRab7, from rice. Transgenic rice over-expressingOsRab7exhibited enhanced seedling growth and increased proline content under salt-treated conditions. Moreover, an increased number of vesicles was observed in the root tip ofOsRab7transgenic rice. TheOsRab7over-expression plants showed enhanced tolerance to salt stress, suggesting that vacuolar trafficking is important for salt tolerance in plants.

This study addresses the important question of causal complexity as it relates to the influence of social capital, entrepreneurial alertness and the entrepreneurship environment on business performance. Using a relatively new methodological approach, namely fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), this paper aims to investigate alternative complex antecedent conditions (or causal recipes) that lead to high performance. Based on a survey of 194 entrepreneurs in China, this paper shows that business performance is likely to be the result of a combination of causal factors. This study finds that: (1) four different configurations of social capital, entrepreneurial alertness and entrepreneurship environment were “equifinal” causes of high performance, and (2) market openness should fit other environmental conditions to achieve high performance. This study contributes to research on entrepreneurship by applying the ideas of “equifinality” and “fit” to entrepreneurial characteristics and environment theory.

It is a well known fact that increased use of purchased farm inputs, such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, seeds and farm machinery, etc., has been associated with a substantial increase in agricultural production and higher farm productivity. Since demand for farm inputs is derived from demand for farm products, therefore, agricultural development in a country or region may be studied either through the changes in farm production and productivity, or through the changes in demand for various farm inputs. The demand for fertilizers, especially, lends itself to this type of analysis, because fertilizer is a highly divisible farm input.
