A novel projective dictionary pair learning (PDPL) model with statistical local features for palmprint recognition is proposed. Pooling technique is used to enhance the invariance of hierarchical local binary pattern (PT-HLBP) for palmprint feature extraction. PDPL is employed to learn an analysis dictionary and a synthesis dictionary which are utilized for image discrimination and representation. The proposed algorithm has been tested by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) database (v2) and ideal recognition accuracy can be achieved. Experimental results indicate that the algorithm not only greatly reduces the time complexity in training and testing phase, but also exhibits good robustness for image rotation and corrosion.

To carry out an effective recognition for palmprint, this paper presents an algorithm of image segmentation of region of interest (ROI), extracts the ROI of a palmprint image and studies the composing features of palmprint. This paper constructs a coordinate by making use of characteristic points in the palm geometric contour, improves the algorithm of ROI extraction and provides a positioning method of ROI. Moreover, this paper uses the wavelet transform to divide up ROI, extracts the energy feature of wavelet, gives an approach of matching and recognition to improve the correctness and efficiency of existing main recognition approaches, and compares it with existing main approaches of palmprint recognition by experiments. The experiment results show that the approach in this paper has the better recognition effect, the faster matching speed, and the higher recognition rate which is improved averagely by 2.69% than those of the main recognition approaches.

The presented paper proposes an algorithm for palmprint recognition using seven different machine learning algorithms. First of all, we have proposed a region of interest (ROI) extraction methodology which is a two key points technique. Secondly, we have performed some image enhancement techniques such as edge detection and morphological operations in order to make the ROI image more suitable for the Hough transform. In addition, we have applied the Hough transform in order to extract all the possible principle lines on the ROI images. We have extracted the most salient morphological features of those lines; slope and length. Furthermore, we have applied the invariant moments algorithm in order to produce 7 appropriate hues of interest. Finally, after performing a complete hybrid feature vectors, we have applied different machine learning algorithms in order to recognize palmprints effectively. Recognition accuracy have been tested by calculating precision, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, dice, Jaccard coefficients, correlation coefficients, and training time. Seven different supervised machine learning algorithms have been implemented and utilized. The effect of forming the proposed hybrid feature vectors between Hough transform and Invariant moment have been utilized and tested. Experimental results show that the feed forward neural network with back propagation has achieved about 99.99% recognition accuracy among all tested machine learning techniques.

Purpose Palmprint recognition is a very interesting and promising area of research. Much work has already been done in this area, but much more needs to be done to make the systems more efficient. In this paper, a multimodal biometrics system based on fusion of left and right palmprints of a person is proposed to overcome limitations of unimodal systems. Design/methodology/approach Features are extracted using some proposed multi-block local descriptors in addition to MBLBP. Fusion of extracted features is done at feature level by a simple concatenation of feature vectors. Then, feature selection is performed on the resulting global feature vector using evolutionary algorithms such as genetic algorithms and backtracking search algorithm for a comparison purpose. The benefits of such step selecting the relevant features are known in the literature, such as increasing the recognition accuracy and reducing the feature set size, which results in runtime saving. In matching step, Chi-square similarity measure is used. Findings The resulting feature vector length representing a person is compact and the runtime is reduced. Originality/value Intensive experiments were done on the publicly available IITD database. Experimental results show a recognition accuracy of 99.17 which prove the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed multimodal biometrics system than other unimodal and multimodal biometrics systems.

A novel method is proposed in this paper to improve the recognition accuracy of Local Binary Pattern (LBP) on low-resolution face recognition. More precise descriptors and effectively face features can be extracted by combining multi-scale blocking center symmetric local binary pattern (CS-LBP) based on Gaussian pyramids and weighted principal component analysis (PCA) on low-resolution condition. Firstly, the features statistical histograms of face images are calculated by multi-scale blocking CS-LBP operator. Secondly, the stronger classification and lower dimension features can be got by applying weighted PCA algorithm. Finally, the different classifiers are used to select the optimal classification categories of low-resolution face set and calculate the recognition rate. The results in the ORL human face databases show that recognition rate can get 89.38% when the resolution of face image drops to 12[Formula: see text]10 pixel and basically satisfy the practical requirements of recognition. The further comparison of other descriptors and experiments from videos proved that the novel algorithm can improve recognition accuracy.

Wear particles recognition is a key link in the process of Ferrography analysis. Different kinds of wear particles vary greatly in texture, texture feature is one of the most important feature in wear particles recognition. Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is an efficient operator for texture description. The binary sequence of traditional LBP operator is obtained by the comparison between the gray value of the neighborhood and the gray value of the center pixel of the neighborhood, the comparison is too simple to cause the loss of the texture. In this paper, an improved LBP operator is presented for texture feature extraction and it is applied to the recognition of severe sliding particles, fatigue spall particles and laminar particles. The experimental results show that our method is an effective feature extraction method and obtains better recognition accuracy compared with other methods.
