Food safety concerns have become increasingly important challenge for agricultural trade. Sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures are often considered as major non-tariff trade barriers, which have surged rapidly over the recent decade. This study systematically investigates the impact of China’s SPS measures on Thai fruit exports. The panel dataset is constructed with 17 Thai fruit items for the sample period 2000–2018. Gravity equations are estimated to quantify the trade effects of SPS measures on the value of fruit exports from Thailand to China. The results from the sectoral analysis reveal that the restrictiveness of SPS measures has a positive and substantial effect on export volumes. This suggests that non-arbitrary and informative SPS requirements imposed by a large importing country would help facilitate the agricultural trade.

Background: Quantification of economic losses due animal diseases like peste-des-petits ruminants (PPR) helps in visualizing the impact of the disease in relational context as well as assist in prioritizing the disease control/eradication options. This study aimed to estimate the farm-level economic losses due to the disease in the state of Himachal Pradesh and carry out a cost-benefit analysis of control programme through vaccination.Methods: An investigation was carried out on an outbreak of PPR in transhumance small ruminant population in Himachal Pradesh (HP). The incidence rates of PPR as obtained in the study were projected to the small ruminant population in the state.Result: The overall morbidity and mortality rates were 36.85% and 27.69% and 25.32% and 1.44%, in goats and sheep, respectively. The estimated annual economic loss due to PPR in HP was INR 2495 million (under high incidence scenario). Under moderate and low incidence rate assumptions, the total losses were estimated at INR 1871 million and INR 1265 million, respectively. Benefit-cost analysis of vaccination against the disease in the state was carried out and the Benefit-Cost Ratios (BCR), ranging between 43:1 to 198:1 revealed the economic feasibility of investment made in PPR control.

A study to understand and assess the impact of altitudinal gradients on the floristic diversity in Shingan valley falling in Rakchham-Chitkul Wildlife Sanctuary district Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh was carried out during the year 2008. The altitudinal gradient in the present case varied from 2800m to 4300m above msl. Total number of plant species as recorded was 118 belonging to 46 families and 87 genera. The dominant families registered were Rosaceae, Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Ranunculaceae and Ploygonaceae. The number of tree species was 11 and 4 with the dominance of Pinus wallichiana and Betula utilis at 2800-3300m and 3300-3800m elevation respectively. The number of shrub species was 15, 13 and 6 with the dominance of Salix fragilis, Juniperus indica and Rhododendron anthopogon at the elevation of 2800-3300m, 3300-3800m and 3800-4300m. The number of herbs species was 63, 55 and 40 at 2800-3300m, 3300-3800m and 3800-4300m elevation respectively. Caltha palustris, Anaphalis triplinervis and Thymus linearis were the dominant shrub at these elevations respectively. The distribution pattern of species was mostly contiguous in all the altitude ranges. Index of diversity for herb species in different elevations ranges was 3.75, 3.66 and 3.44 for 2800-3300m 3300-3800m and 3800-4300m elevation respectively. Out of the 58 medicinal plant species as recorded from the valley, 14 species like Dactylorhiza hatagirea, Angelica glauca, Betula utilis, Podophyllum hexandrum, Picrorhiza kurrooa, Rheum australe, Taxus wallichiana, Heracleum lanatum, Polygonatum verticillatum, Rheum webbianum , Rhodiola heterodonta, Rhododendron anthopogon, Rhododendron campanulatum, Rhododendron lepidotum etc. fall in the category of threatened plants as per IUCN categorization.

Abstract The objective of this article is to study the external competitiveness of Morocco. To do so, we first make a sectoral analysis of Moroccan international trade. This analysis reveals the sectors and products in which Morocco should specialize, as well as the products in which Morocco has a strong export potential. Then, we study the impact of the introduction of price and cost competitiveness indicators in the export's equations of Armington (1969). Using a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) estimated over the period 1988-2017. The principal results confirm that Moroccan external competitiveness can’t be measured only by the price factor. We also show that the competitiveness is also reflected with other factors like cost of production and quality.JEL Classification : C22, F14, F13, O55
