Crop wild relatives provide a useful source of genetic variation and represent a large pool of genetic diversity for new allelic variation required in breeding programs. Armenia is an important center of origin both for cultivated Vitis vinifera ssp. sativa and wild Vitis vinifera ssp. sylvestris. Owing to recent prospection in Armenian woods and river floodplains many forms of wild grapevine were discovered and inventoried, which is an important prerequisite to unlock their breeding potential in the future. The fact that some genotypes of V. sylvestris can withstand the diseases is likely to be due to a more efficient basal immunity. The overall goal of the proposed research was to characterize the diversity of V. sylvestris from Armenia with respect to its capacity for stilbene biosynthesis, which might be exploited as genetic resource for resistance breeding. The realized research stimulates the recovery, characterization and preservation of wild grape germplasm, presently at risk of extinction. The recovery and characterization of wild genotypes will be the base of selection of genetic traits important in breeding programs for the generation of biotic and changing climate tolerant grapevine varieties and rootstocks, both necessary for the future of viticulture in Armenia and in Europe.

Studies of domestication genetics enrich our understanding of how domestication shapes genetic and morphological diversity. We characterized patterns of genetic variation in two independently domesticated pumpkins and their wild progenitors to assess and compare genetic consequences of domestication. To compare genetic diversity pre- and post-domestication and to identify genes targeted by selection during domestication, we analyzed ∼15,000 SNPs of 48 unrelated accessions, including wild, landrace, and improved lines for each of two pumpkin species, Cucurbita argyrosperma and Cucurbita maxima. Genetic diversity relative to its wild progenitor was reduced in only one domesticated subspecies, C. argyrosperma ssp. argyrosperma. The two species have different patterns of genetic structure across domestication status. Only 1.5% of the domestication features identified for both species were shared between species. These findings suggest that ancestral genetic diversity, wild-crop gene flow, and domestication practices shaped the genetic diversity of two similar Cucurbita crops in different ways, adding to our understanding of how genetic diversity changes during the processes of domestication and how trait improvement impacts the breeding potential of modern crops.

The study of the form diversity of Siberian poplar species P. nigra , P. laurifolia and P. × jrtyschensis serves as the initial basis for identifying the adaptive capacity of populations, their economically valuable forms and breeding potential. The carried out analysis of the polymorphism of the species in nature and their cultivated forms showed their considerable diversity in terms of their habitual characteristics. It was revealed that the species of P. nigra , P. laurifolia and P. × jrtyschensis have been studied rather irregularly. The paper features an assessment of the form diversity in the North-Western part of the Altai-Sayan mountainous area. The analysis was performed on the basis of qualitative features of the crown, bark, leaves and shoots. Within the studied territory, P. nigra is characterized by the presence of two morphotypes, according to the nature of the pubescence and two distinct forms of bark color. It has been established that the populations of P. laurifolia of the Tom’ river basin are characterized by a greater polymorphism, both according to the diversity of morphotypes of shoots and pubescence, and by the color and structure of the cortex. The white and green bark forms of the laurel poplar are valuable for sustainable construction and selection work. In P. × jrtyschensis , gray bark forms predominate in populations, and its diversity requires a further systematic study.
