For the first time, the congress was held online. For two days, 25 speakers from 9 countries shared their knowledge with the audience. Broadcasts of reports and symposia were attended by about 1,500 people worldwide.

In a report to the International Congress of Ophthalmologists in America, in 1922, Finlay reported for the first time that when examining the eyes of one woman who was in the last month of pregnancy, he accidentally stumbled upon a sharp bilateral temporal narrowing of the visual field, and since there were no he could not detect the phenomenon of moments, he suggested that this narrowing of the field of vision depends on the hypertrophy of the cerebral appendage occurring during pregnancy.

The next International Congress is to be held at Bologna in September of next year. For the first time since the Cambridge Congress of 1912, all differences of nationality are to be disregarded, and mathematicians who believe that in spite of all that has happened since 1912 international cooperation is possible, or even that because of all that has happened international cooperation is imperative, will be glad to have ample warning in order not to make plans that might inadvertently interfere with their attendance.

This article introduces the special issue to celebrate the 11th International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry at Urbana-Champaign in 2015. The theme of the congress was “Constructing a New Critical Qualitative Inquiry.” The best way to introduce this special issue is with a T.S. Eliot quote Norman Denzin used to welcome the ICQI participants to the congress in 2015: “We shall not cease from exploration/And the end of all our exploring/Will be to arrive where we started/And know the place for the first time.” In this special issue, scholars from different views, perspectives, frameworks, and places reflect on what we want for the next 10 years. We invite you to listen to them.

The work summarizes the V Forum of pediatric surgeons of Russia, held in Ufa, September 3–5, 2019. For the first time, the annual largest scientific event of domestic pediatric surgeons was held outside the capital. The Forum was attended by over 600 delegates, including specialists from 10 foreign countries and representatives of all federal districts of the Russian Federation. The scientific program of the Forum was represented by symposia (14), round tables (4), the video session “How I Do It,” master classes (2) and a competition of young scientists. A workshop was held on topical issues of pediatric surgery. The report contains brief results of the analysis of the organization of the Forum and the scientific content of the reports.

This exhibition, which was dedicated solely to electricity, pursued primarily scientific, technical and educational goals. The commercial component was in the second place. Under the banner of the new science, thousands of scientists, engineers, inventors, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts from different countries and continents succeeded to unite for the first time and clearly show the whole world the prospects for development in the near future. The First International Congress of Electricians, held within the framework of the exhibition, overcame scientific and state differences and developed a unified approach to electrical units. The International Electrical Exhibition was a kind of the electrical engineering community crystallization point, a platform for its consolidation, the unity of which the time was unable to destroy. The first part of the article shows the great efforts done by the organizing committee on preparing the electrical exhibition. Special attention is paid to the exhibition expositions, its main halls and pavilions. Testimonials of eyewitnesses of those events are given.

Internationalizing biochemistry: the 1949 congress in context**The 1949 congress – 50 years on This year marks the 50th anniversary of the First International Congress of Biochemistry that was held in Cambridge (UK) in 1949. It was during this First Congress that plans for creating the International Union of Biochemistry (IUB) were made, which was eventually founded in 1955. Every three years, the IUB sponsors an International Congress of Biochemistry and 17 have been held to date, including the 15th Congress in Jerusalem in 1991, during which the current name, International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), was adopted. In 2000, the Congress will return to the UK again, for the first time since the landmark congress in Cambridge. The 18th International Congress of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is to be held on 16–20 July 2000 in Birmingham (http://www.iubmb2000.org). This Congress is historic as it marks the new millennium and it is the first joint major international meeting of the IUBMB and the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS). In recognition of its timing, the IUBMB/FEBS 2000 Congress has a central theme: ‘Beyond the Genome: Understanding and Exploiting Molecules and Cells in the Third Millennium’. Key disciplines related to genome studies, including bioinformatics and comparative genomics, will be interwoven with topics spanning the major areas of biochemistry and molecular biology. In addition to an exciting scientific programme for research scientists from academic institutions and industry around the world, the Congress will have a major programme of evening public-awareness sessions as well as special ‘focus sessions’ on education and techniques, aimed at young scientists.

In the COVID-19 pandemic year 2020, the 30th edition of the ERS Congress took place for the first time in a fully virtual format. Despite the challenging nature of the task to create and deliver an online event of this size and scope, the ERS Congress 2020 turned to be a great success, welcoming over 33 000 delegates to the specially designed online platform and offering more than 450 scientific and educational sessions. Somewhat predictable, this year's Congress dedicated a full day on COVID-19 topic, highlighting that infection with SARS-CoV-2 is a respiratory disease. In this article the Early Career Members of the Assembly 10 (Respiratory Infections and Tuberculosis) review some of the most interesting sessions including presentations and posters on respiratory infections and tuberculosis that were deemed as important.

The summer of 1908 was a summer of congresses in London. The decennial Pan-Anglican Congress assembled in July, the History of Religions Congress met in September, the Trades Union Congress held its annual meeting shortly thereafter, and the International Congress on Moral Education took place in October. None of these received as much newspaper attention as the Roman Catholic International Eucharistic Congress, which convened in England for the first time, from Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13, September. Many column inches were devoted to the preparations and proceedings; photographs were printed; and hundreds of readers’ letters were published afterwards. In reportage the newspapers differed slightly; in opinion, more so. Most of the proceedings were not controversial at all, consisting of liturgies, lectures on various aspects of Catholic belief concerning the Eucharist, and evening meetings in the Albert Hall. What excited the press and sections of the public was the proposed closing spectacular: a procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the streets around Westminster Cathedral.

The disease of the skin, described for the first time by Kaposi in 1872 under the name sarcoma idiopathicum pigmentosum and attributed by him to the true primary sarcomas of the skin, being relatively rare, attracted the attention of prominent dermatologists at the end of the last century, serving as the subject of a lively and lengthy controversy both in the literature and and at various congresses of dermatologists, including the XII International Congress in Moscow.
