The aim of this research was the synthesis of polymers with the addition of S,S'-thiodi-4,1-phenylene bis(thiomethacrylate) (DMSPS) by bulk polymerization. Styrene (St), divinylbenzene (DVB) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) were used for the copolymerization as main monomers. The chemical structures of sulfur-containing polymers were confirmed by the spectroscopic analysis (ATR/FT-IR). In order to determine the impact of the sulfur derivative (DMSPS) addition on thermal properties of the obtained copolymers, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was performed. The hardness tests of the obtained copolymers were also applied using a Shore durometer.

Synthesis and characterization of some new Schiff base ligands derived from various diamines and nitrosalicylaldehyde and their complexes of Ni(II) and Cu(II) are reported. Several spectral techniques such as UV-Vis, FT-IR, and NMR spectra were used to identify the chemical structures of the reported ligands and their complexes. The ligands are found to be bound to the metal atom through the oxygen atoms of the hydroxyl groups and nitrogen atoms of imine groups, which is also supported by spectroscopic techniques. The results obtained by FT-IR and NMR showed that the Schiff base complexes of transition metal (II) have square-planar geometry.

A phthalonitrile precursor 4-(3-hydroxypropylmercapto)phthalonitrile (3) was synthesized via a base-catalyzed nucleophilic aromatic nitro displacement of 4-nitrophthalonitrile with the 3-mercapto-1-propanol. A novel tetrasubstituted metal-free phthalocyanine (4) ( M = 2 H ) and its metal complexes (5–8) ( M = Zn , Ni , Cu and Co ) bearing 3-hydroxypropylmercapto moieties were prepared by the cyclotetramerization reaction of (3) with the appropriate materials. The visible spectra of the zinc(II) phthalocyanine (5) was recorded with different concentrations and different ions as Ag +, Hg 2+ and Pb 2+ in DMF and also with different solvents as dimethylformamide and pyridine. Fluorescence spectrum of the compound (5) was also studied. Temperature and frequency dependence of AC conductivity for (4–8) was investigated in air and under vacuum and were found to be ~10-8–10-5 S.m-1. Thermal properties of the phthalocyanines were examined by differential scanning calorimetry. All the novel compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, UV-vis, FT-IR, NMR and MS spectral data and DSC techniques.

A series of chromophores based on benzene and thiophene moieties as π-conjugating spacers were designed and synthesized by Horner-Emmons-Wadsworth reaction and Vilsmeier-Haack reaction, followed by Knoevenagel reaction with different electron acceptors. Their structures were confirmed by 1HNMR, FT-IR, HPLC-Ms, UV-visible spectra, and the thermal properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Solvatochromic method was used to measure their nonlinear optical properties. The variation of chromophoric structures on NLO properties was investigated, indicating that the cyano substitution on the vinylene bridge of the chromophore produces a considerable red-shift of the absorption maximum, and would greatly enhance the molecular quadratic hyperpolarizability (βμ).

The present work focuses on the preparation and characterization of poly(3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (PGPTMS) under mild conditions. Ring-opening polymerization of the 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) is initiated with the bentonite of Maghnite-H+ (Mag-H+), an ecologic and low-cost catalyst. The evolution of epoxy ring-opening was studied in bulk and in solution using CH2Cl2 as solvent, as well as the influences of several factors such as the amount of Mag-H+, polymerization time and temperature on the yield of polymer were investigated. The best polymer yield (30 %) was obtained in bulk polymerization at room temperature (20 °C) for a reaction time 8 h, and it’s increases with time and reaches 68 % for 7 days. The structures of the obtained polymers (PGPTMS) were confirmed respectively by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The thermal properties of the prepared polymers were given by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the Tg of PGPTMS is recorded at -31.27 °C, and it is thermally stable with a degradation start temperature greater than 300 °C, all decomposition stopped at 600 °C. Novel polymers with imide and ether were synthesized by pyromellitic dianhydride and Pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 4,4'-metylenedianiline (MDA), amino-teminated polyoxypropylene (D2000). The structures and thermostability of polymer were characterized through FT-IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differental scanning calorimetry (DSC), solubility behavior was determined via seven solvents. The results indicate that these polymers have good chemical resistance and exhibit excellent thermostability owing to the introduction of imide units.

A new kind of triphenylene derivative sym-(OC3H6OCOC2H4COOH)6 with triphenylene at the core and carboxyl groups at the peripheral chains was synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR. Thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that these compounds have a good thermal stability, which is dependent on the flexibility and interaction of the peripheral chains. Red shifts in electronic absorption spectra of the compounds were found in solution with increasing concentration.
