Continued international integration of the post-Deng era (1990s on) transformed panda country. The specific site of the Wanglang reserve became a juncture where the local Baima villagers, international scientists, NGOs, and tourists (both foreign and domestic) competed to define the giant panda’s place in the environment and in China. Persistently pursuing its charter purposes as a scientific research base, the Wanglang reserve becomes a model and training station for wildlife monitoring and experimental conservation. One experiment, ecotourism has a dramatic impact on the area. The colorful ethnic character of the Baima people initially proved to be an asset to World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) efforts to instigate tourism. The industry took on an identity independent of panda preservation, leading reserve staff to reemphasize Wanglang’s ties to science.

Abstract Introduction Every day in our surgical department; prior to our quality improvement project, Junior Doctors spent on average 3.26 clinical hours maintaining 5 surgical inpatient lists of different specialities with accessibility of lists rated as “neutral” based on a 5-point scale from difficult to easy. Our hospital previously had lists stored locally on designated computers causing recurrent difficulties in accessing and editing these lists. Method We used surveys sent to clinicians to collect data. Cycle 1: Surgical Assessment Units list on Microsoft Teams Cycle 2: Addition of surgical specialities and wards lists onto Microsoft Teams. Cycle 3 (current): expand the use of Microsoft Teams to other specialities. Results Utilising technology led to a 25% reduction in time spent on maintaining inpatient lists, to 2.46 hours a day, and an improvement in the accessibility of lists to “easy”. Across a year, this saves over 220 hours clinician hours which can be used towards patient care and training. Furthermore, use of Microsoft Teams has improved communication and patient care, in the form of virtual regional Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings and research projects. Conclusions Microsoft Teams is currently free to all NHS organisations in England so there is potential for these efficiency savings to be replicated nationwide.

As the use of simulation has become more established in the delivery of healthcare education and training, there has been a corresponding increase in healthcare simulation research. Simulation-based research can be divided into research about simulation (answers research questions in which the focus is on simulation itself) and research through simulation (simulation as a method/tool for research). However, there are barriers, particularly for smaller less well-resourced simulation centres, that may prohibit participation in research. Therefore, it is suggested that quality improvement (QI) through simulation may be a pragmatic way in which simulation centres of all sizes can contribute to improving patient care beyond education and training. QI is defined as systematic, data-guided activities designed to bring about immediate, positive changes in the delivery of healthcare. Although not the case in healthcare, other industries routinely used simulation to support QI. For example, in aviation simulation is used to inform the design of the working environment, the appropriate use of technology, to exercise emergency procedures and to ‘re-fly’ flights following an adverse event as part of the mishap investigation. Integrating simulation within healthcare QI can support the development of novel interventions as well helping to address heretofore intractable issues.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a public health emergency with increasing rates and spread globally. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) has been advocated to reduce the burden of antimicrobial resistance, promote rational and appropriate use of antibiotics and improve clinical outcomes. Education and training are one of the AMS interventions to improve antimicrobial use. We present the roll out of a successful AMS programme with education and training using the Global-PPS as data collection tool to measure AMS interventions and impact.Methodology: This was a cross sectional study on the implementation of an AMS programme at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Global PPS was conducted in 2015 to collect baseline data which was used to identify targets for quality improvement in AMS and was repeated in 2017 and 2018 to measure impact of AMS interventions. AMS interventions included education, feedback of Global-PPS result and writing of the hospitalwide antibiotic policy based on the baseline data.Results: Out of the 746 inpatients surveyed, 476 (68.3%) had received at least one antimicrobial on the days of Global-PPS. The antimicrobial prescribing rates reduced significantly over the three time periods. In 2015, 82.5% were placed on antimicrobials, 65.5% in 2017 and 51.1% in 2018 (p<0.00001). The documentation of indication for treatment significantly improved from 53.4% in 2015 to 97.2% in 2018 (p<0.0001). Stop review date also significantly improved from 28.7% to 70.2% in 2018 (p<0.00001). Surgical prophylaxis for more than 24 hours reduced significantly from 93.3% in 2015 to 65.7% in 2018 (p=0.002) even though the prevalence was still high. The three most commonly administered antimicrobial groups were third generation cephalosporins, imidazole derivatives and quinolones. The most commonly prescribed antibiotics for surgical prophylaxis were ceftriaxone and metronidazole in 2015 and ceftriaxone in 2017.Conclusion: The use of education and training as AMS intervention in a limited resource setting clearly made impact on antimicrobial prescribing patterns in the hospital. Global-PPS is useful to set quality improvement targets and for monitoring, evaluation and surveillance of an AMS programme. Keywords: Antibiotic, Stewardship, Resistance, Education, Global-PPS
