This study explores the most effective leadership style in school performances of Central Colleges in Sri Lanka and identifies problems and difficulties faced by the principles of the selected schools. This study revealed that the transformational leadership style is the most effective as it leads higher school performances. Some principals of the Central Colleges were not successful due to the lack of resources, negative attitudes of the stakeholders, inefficient government officers, unfavorable external environment and the unnecessary political interference. Policy measures are proposed towards better performance of the Central Colleges of Sri Lanka. Findings of this study will help the governing bodies to design and update policies for improving performance of the Central Colleges specifically, and school leadership of Sri Lanka in generally.

PurposeImproper waste management has been a serious issue in many countries, thus, home composting is considered as an effective method in solid waste management (SWM). Based on qualitative research methods, this study explores peoples' motives to choose composting and main problems confronted by them in home composting in Kaduwela and Moratuwa municipalities in the Western Province of Sri Lanka and proposes policy measures to improve home compositing.Design/methodology/approachThis study was mainly based on qualitative research methods. A convenient sample of 40 households including 20 households from each municipal council (MC) has been selected using semi-structured interviews. Descriptive methods were used to analyze the data.FindingsCitizens have chosen to compost mainly, for gardening, the influence of local authorities, economic benefits and environmental and health concerns. Fear of potential health problems, lack of resources, problems caused by animals, problems related to compost bins, limited knowledge and awareness about composting are difficulties encountered during home composting. Providing compost bins to people at a concessionary price or for free of charge, providing required facilities and financial assistance, promoting people's positive attitudes and awareness, encouraging the use of compost in households, improving the standard of composting and making relevant legal and institutional arrangements to promote people's participation in home composting are suggested for encouraging home composting.Research limitations/implicationsThis study used a small sample, which is the main limitation of this study.Practical implicationsThe policy implication will help to improve composting solid waste practices of the Local Governments.Originality/valueThere is a lack of research on composting related to the selected municipalities. As composting is an effective method in SWM, the findings and the proposed policy measures of this study will help to improve the SWM of the Local Governments of Sri Lanka.

Abstract We investigated the impact of transactional and transformational leadership styles on organizational citizenship behaviors. The sample consisted of 213 workers of both genders who answered the Multifactorial Leadership Scale and the Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCB) Scale. The multiple linear regression showed that: the transactional leadership style positively predicted the OCB dimension associated to the creation of a climate favorable to the organization in the external environment; the transformational leadership style positively predicted the dimensions of OCB associated to the creative suggestions related to the system; to the creation of a favorable organizational climate in the external environment; to self-training and to cooperation among colleagues; transformational leadership style showed greater predictive power on OCB than transactional leadership. It was concluded that transformational leaders are more capable to lead their subordinates in order to take actions that go beyond their prescribed roles.

This research focused on the training of school leaders in transformational leadership - which is recommended for educational leaders all over the world (Alkhasawneh, 2018) - and to determine if it impacts their leadership skills or not. Based on relevant literature and training need analysis, training was planned and given to 120 in-service school heads for one month. The research was quasi-experimental that used a one-group pre-test post-test design because no similar group was available. The experimental group was divided into two groups; public and private, for a comparison. Also, a follow-up study was conducted to keep it nearer to the experimental approach. The training delivered to the school principals comprised of selected content about the concept of leadership and transformational leadership. This content was reinforced by real-world examples and relevant leadership activities. Participants were assessed under pre-defined grading criteria that were their attendance, participation, and performance in quizzes and assignments during the training. After completion, they were observed and evaluated for their leadership skills at their workplaces and awarded with the points. This quantitative data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, and paired sample t-test for knowing and comparing the results. It was found that the transformational leadership style training had improved the effectiveness and leadership skills of school leaders. Similar training courses have been endorsed by training participants for enhancing the leadership styles of school leaders. This chapter explores the effective leadership style for positive school culture as perceived by some Malaysian Northern State school teachers. This chapter uses focus group and open-ended questions to have in-depth understanding and testing of the participants' ability of suggesting or predicting the best or most effective school leadership style for building school positive culture for best leadership practices. The participants were teachers from different schools in Northern States Malaysia undertaking master program in educational management at Universiti Utara Malaysia. The findings revealed that transformational leadership style was rated, predicted, and ranked as the best leadership style for school principals to apply in building positive school culture according to their context while distributed leadership and instructional leadership could be also considered as the second leadership styles for building positive school culture in the Northern schools of Malaysia.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership style and leadership effectiveness among academic heads in national universities in Sri Lanka. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ form5x) developed by Bass & Avolio (1992) examined the transformational leadership style of academic heads as perceived by academic subordinates. Emotional Competence Inventory 2.0 (Sala, 2002) measured the four dimensions of emotional intelligence. The four dimensions were self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Correlation and stepwise regressions were used to analyze the relationship between the variables of emotional intelligence and transformational leadership and leadership effectiveness in national universities in Sri Lanka. The statistical results of the study revealed that there was no statistically significant relationship between emotional intelligence an transformational leadership style of heads of the academic departments perceived by academic subordinates. The relationship between total emotional intelligence and leadership effectiveness was not significant.

Ada enam peran yang dimainkan oleh kepala madrasah dalam praktik kepemimpinan transformasionalnya. Pertama, melakukan sosialisasi kurikulum 2013. Kedua, membina pribadi guru dan karyawan dengan melakukan pembinaan mental, pembinaan moral, pembinaan fisik, dan pembinaan artistik. Ketiga, membina pribadi peserta didik. Keempat, mengubah paradigma guru. Kelima, memenuhi berbagai fasilitas dan sumber belajar yang mendukung dalam implementasi kurikulum 2013. Keenam, menciptakan lingkungan madrasah yang kondusif-akademik, baik secara fisik maupun nonfisik. This paper is organized as a guide for the headmaster to practice transformational leadership style so that the teachers and staff at the school ready to apply the 2013 curriculum. There are six roles that play by the headmaster in the practice of transformational leadership. First role is to disseminate the curriculum of 2013. Second role is fostering teachers and employees personality to perform mental, moral, physical, and artistic development. Third role is fostering the learners’ personality. Fourth role is changing the paradigm of teachers. Fifth role is fulfilling a variety of facilities and learning resources that support the implementation of the 2013 curriculum. Sixth role is creating an academic-supported environment in madrasah both physical and nonphysical.

Project managers’ leadership has a direct and an indirect effect on project success. Extant literature has established that transformational leadership style positively affects project success in a major way. The main aim of this research is to understand the variables that positively affects transformational leadership development and their interrelationships in megaprojects. The Total Interpretive Structural Model (TISM) methodology is adopted to propose a framework, and Impact Matrix Cross-Reference Multiplication Applied to a Classification (MICMAC) approach is used to examine the strategic nature of the enablers. The research shows that there exists a group of enablers having a high driving power and low dependence, requiring maximum attention and of strategic importance, while another group consists of those variables that have high dependence and are resultant actions. Furthermore, the model explains the relationships among each pair of variables. Organisations dealing in megaprojects would be the major beneficiaries of this study. Policy makers in these organisations would explicitly understand the variables and their interrelationships that needs attention for transformational leadership development. This would help them to prioritize their efforts and implement suitable strategies to focus on the most important variables for developing transformational leaders ultimately leading to project success.
