Oesophagus is the second most (46.8%) common site of impaction of foreign body in the gastro-intestinal tract. Dentures constitute the 3rd most common (2.4%) foreign body in oesophagus of adults, following meat bone (76.1%) and coin (3.6%).In our Institute, impacted dentures in esophageal are referred to our department after a failed endoscopic venture at removal by ENT surgeons. Extraction in such a situation calls for judicial planning and careful timing of the procedure to achieve satisfactory results. The present study was done on 11 cases of thoracic oesophageal dentures which were removed surgically in the Department of CTVS Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata over 2 years of period. Between 1st October 2017 to 30st September 2019, 11 dentures were extracted from thoracic oesophagus via right postero-lateral thoracotomy approach. The defect in the oesophagus after denture removal was primarily closed; with reinforcement using intercostals muscle pedicled flap. A defunctioning cervical oesophagostomy and a feeding jejunostomy (FJ) were done in all cases. Surgical leaks were noted in 5 cases, of which 1 lady had fulminant mediastinitis before she died. Pneumonia was observed in 4 cases, superficial surgical wound infection in 2 cases, blocked FJ tube in 1 case and leakage following closure of cervical oesophagostomy in 3 cases. Thoracic esophageal dentures are serious surgical entities which need early diagnosis and management. Pre-operative optimization is very important for avoiding surgical leakage.

Polyps covered by non-neoplastic squamous epithelium may develop anywhere in the esophagus. Squamous polyps may be divided in to two types: Inflammatory polyps and squamous papillomas. To study the incidence and morphology of Gastro Intestinal Tract polyps from specimens received at Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Chennai. To analyze the incidence and morphological features of malignancies associated with polyps. Of the 102 cases, intestinal cancer was found predominately 51(50%) followed by stomach. The ages ranged from 17 to 77 yrs and average was 44 yrs. The female ratio was 0.77.  Expression of P53 was varied with the property of the polyps and it could be a useful marker for determining the treatment regime.

Prune Belly Syndrome (PBS) is a rare congenital anomaly. A male baby was received from the Department of Paediatrics, Assam Medical College hospital which died on the second day of birth. It was a diagnosed case of Prune Belly Syndrome (PBS) due to its flabby abdominal wall ballooning out in flanks and skin creases radiating laterally and downwards from the umbilicus - "Prune" like appearance. It was observed that the baby had congenital absence of abdominal muscles and undescended testis. On dissection, associated defects of urinary tract and gastro intestinal tract, persistent cloaca and preductalcoarctation of aorta were noted. <p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> Foreign body aspiration is a condition that requires immediate and prompt management to avoid complications. Aim of this study was to find out proportion of tracheobronchial foreign bodies in under five age group, common sites of foreign body lodgement, types of tracheobronchial foreign bodies, and complications associated with this.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> This study was conducted in Department of ENT at Jubilee Mission Medical College and RI, Thrissur, during the period of January 2018 to June 2019 and comprises 24 cases. Rigid bronchoscopy under general anesthesia was done to remove these foreign bodies.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Eighteen cases were in under 5 age group. Peanut was the most common foreign body aspirated followed by badam and vegetable seeds. Common site of lodgement was in bronchi with 10 cases in right bronchi and 9 cases in left bronchi. Complication seen associated with this was pneumonia in this study.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Foreign body aspiration is common in young children and hence a positive history might be absent. Hence there is high chance of misdiagnosis and complications. Parent education is must and avoid giving ungrinded nuts to young children.</p>

Preservation of probiotics by lyophilization is considered a method of choice for developing stable products. However, both direct consumption and reconstitution of dehydrated probiotic preparations before application “compromise” the survival and functional characteristics of the microorganisms under the stress of the upper gastro-intestinal tract. We evaluated the impact of different food additives on the viability, mucin adhesion, and zeta potential of a freeze-dried putative probiotic, Lactiplantibacillus (Lp.) plantarum HAC03. HAC03-compatible ingredients for the formulation of ten rehydration mixtures could be selected. Elevated efficacy was achieved by the B-active formulation, a mixture of non-protein nitrogen compounds, sugars, and salts. The survival of Lp. plantarum HAC03 increased by 36.36% compared rehydration with distilled water (4.92%) after passing simulated gastro-intestinal stress conditions. Cell viability determined by plate counting was confirmed by flow cytometry. B-active formulation also influenced Lp. plantarum HAC03 functionality by increasing its adherence to a Caco-2 cell-line and by changing the bacterial surface charge, measured as zeta potential.Hydrophobicity, mucin adhesion and immunomodulatory properties of Lp. plantarum HAC03 were not affected by the B-active formulation. The rehydration medium also effectively protected Lp. plantarum ATCC14917, Lp. plantarum 299v, Latilactobacillus sakei (Lt.) HAC11, Lacticaseibacillus (Lc.) paracasei 532, Enterococcus faecium 200, and Lc. rhamnosus BFE5263.

Organs and content of the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) of marine mammals are relevant for a variety of investigations and provide data to researchers from different fields. Currently used protocols applied to the GIT for specific analysis limit the possibility to execute other investigations and important information could be lost. To ensure a proper sample collection and a multidisciplinary investigation of the GIT of marine mammals, a new multi-sieves tool and a specific protocol have been developed. This new device and approach allowed the simultaneous sampling of the GIT and its content for the main investigations concerned. The samples collected during these preliminary trials were suitable to perform all the different research procedures considered in this work. The obtained results show that with a few and easy procedural adjustments, a multidisciplinary sampling and evaluation of the GIT of marine mammals is possible. This will reduce the risk of losing important data aimed at understanding the cause of death of the animal, but also biology and ecology of marine mammals, and other important data for their conservation and habitats management.
