Introduction : Hospital acquired Infections (HAIs) are called those infections that were not present at the time of patient’ hospitalization in a hospital and have been acquired after hospitalization. Nurses are an important part of the any healthcare team who play a unique role in the control of Hospital acquired infections. Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of staff nurses about preventing the spread of hospital acquired infections (HAIs) at tertiary care Hospital of Dhaka city. Methods and Materials : This descriptive cross-sectional study was done among nurses having two years experience from two tertiary level hospitals in Dhaka city during January to June 2017. Self administered questionnaire containing different set of questions regarding knowledge, attitude and practice on HAI were used as a tool for data collection. Questionnaire was supplied to all staff nurses available at different in-patient wards of these two hospitals. Only 234 staff nurses who completed and returned the questionnaire were included in this study. Data were analyzed using Microsoft excel 2013 software. Result : Staff nurses were found to have good knowledge, moderately positive attitude but poor practice in prevention of hospital acquired infections. About 95% of the participants considered that prevention of HAIs were a valuable part of their role. About 65% of the staff nurses had received formal training regarding hand hygiene. The 100 % of participants felt that they would be less likely to transmit infection to the patients if they performed hand-hygiene. About 64% of them argued that hand hygiene agents were not readily available in current settings. Regarding practice, only 6% performed hand hygiene before patients contact and 27% of the staff nurses reported that they often forgot to perform hand hygiene. Conclusion : The finding of this study revealed a good knowledge of infection prevention among the majority of participants with relatively minimal level of practice. For strengthening the knowledge, attitude and practice towards HAIs, there is in need of developing regular training program and monitoring on performance feedback regarding hand hygiene is recommended. Background and Aims: Providing a necessary care for a sick person outside home 'in hospes or hospital' dates back to nearly 300 century BC. In the present day hospital care facilities has been taken an institutional shape both in public and private sector. A hospital bed is both a scarce and expensive commodity in healthcare. Administrators running hospitals are in a dire need of objective measures and methods for efficient management of their limited financial resources. Bed utilization rates can be of immense help in realistic and effective decision making. The present study was undertaken to explore utilization of bed in a specialized tertiary care hospital in the Dhaka city. Methods: Hospital records of the year were reviewed- age, gender, disease profile, duration of hospital stay, outcome of treatment were recorded and bed occupancy rate was calculated. Data were presented as number, percentage and/ or mean SD, as appropriate. The dada were managed by Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) for Windows Version 10. Results: The results showed in the year 2001 total number of admissions were 13,305 of which 9953 (74.8%) were male and 3352 (25.2%) female. Average monthly admission was 1109. Maximum number of admissions (1304) was observed in the month of September of that year. Male admission rate was higher than female admission throughout the year. Among all the admission 27.2% were of road traffic accident cases. Among the admitted patients there was 57.3% discharge with advice, 1.9% death, 14.6% discharge on request bond, 12.7% discharge on request. Of all the admission there 12.5% found to be absconded. Bed occupancy rate was 79.75% and average length of stay in the hospital 18.47 days. Conclusions: The present data suggest that (i) in terms of bed occupancy rate the NITOR found to run in optimal capacity which, however, might be attributed to the relative high rate of ascendance and discharges on requests; (ii) average length of stay of patients appeared to be relatively longer and (iii) the management need to look into the issue and take appropriate measures to reduce patients unwanted long duration of stay and make the tertiary care hospital improve the quality of services. Among the various beta-lactam antibiotics, carbapenems are the most potent and have been reserved for use in treating infections caused by multi-drug resistant (MDR) Gram negative bacilli, especially Pseudomonas. They are effective even against Extended Spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and Amp C b-lactamase producing bacteria. The clinical utility of carbapenems is under threat with the emergence of carbapenem resistant bacteria due to production of carbapenem hydrolyzing metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) which confers high-level resistance to all b-lactam antibiotics except aztreonam. The prevalence of MBLs have been studied in many countries but not been reported in Bangladesh. The purpose of the study to determine the presence of MBLs producing Pseudomonas in clinical samples from a tertiary care hospital. MBLs producing Pseudomonas in various clinical samples of an urban hospital of Dhaka city was investigated over a 6-month period (January 2009-June 2009). EDTA-IMP agar dilution minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) reduction method was employed to detect MBL producing Pseudomonas sp. Out of 44 Pseudomonas isolates 08 (18.2%) were sensitive and 23 (52.3%) were resistant to imipenem while 13 (29.5%) were intermediate resistant (MIC = 8 μg/ml) to imipenem. All Pseudomonas showing intermediate resistance to imipenem were found sensitive by disc diffusion method. MBL phenotype was detected in 43%(10 out of 23) imipenem resistant Pseudomonas spp. while the rate was 61%(08 out of 13) is intermediate resistant strains by EDTA-IMP agar dilution MIC method. The results of the study indicated high prevalence of MBL producing Pseudomonas spp. in our hospital environment. Early detection of these MBL producing Pseudomonas is necessary to institute appropriate treatment and effective infection control measures. Background: The pattern of hepatocelluar carcinoma may vary in different patients. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to see the pattern of hepatocelluar carcinoma among the patients attended at a tertiary care hospital in Dhaka city. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Radiology and Imaging at Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka and Banghabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka from January 2007 to May 2008 for a period of around one and half year. All the patients presented with hepatocellular carcinoma at the age group of more than 20 years with both sexes were selected as study population. The patients were undergone CT-scan examination and the confirmation was performed by histopathological examination. The details of the pattern of tumor among the hepatocellular carcinoma patients were examined and were recorded. Result: A total number of 50 patients were recruited in this study after fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Mean age with SD of study population was 48.78 ±12.07. Within 25 cases of HCC as diagnosed by CT scan 13(52%) had solitary lesion 7(28%) had multiple lesions and remaining 5(20%) had diffuse lesions. The tumour size of 8 cm or more was the highest which was 10 in numbers. However, 4 to 8 cm was found in 7(28.0%) cases and 3 to 4 cm was detected in 3(12.0%) cases. Conclusion: In conclusion most of the HCC is solitary lesion with more than 8 cm in size. Journal of Current and Advance Medical Research 2019;6(1):6-9
